Lawmakers are planning to call entertainment producers to the carpet and ask them this: Are songs and performances by girl idol groups too suggestive, given that most of the members are underage?

The lawmakers plan to summon owners of local major entertainment companies
- including SM Entertainment and DSP Media - to a National Assembly audit and inspection hearing next week to determine whether songs and performances of girl groups are provocative, given that most of the girls are no more than teenagers.

The National Assembly’s Culture, Sports, Tourism and Broadcasting Committee yesterday requested that three entertainment business tycoons - Kim Young-min of SM Entertainment, Lee Ho-yeon of DSP Media and Park Ki-ho of GP Basic Entertainment - appear at the parliamentary audit Monday as witnesses.

“Lawmakers will point out legal and ethical problems of companies that make underage singers wear short pants to expose their thighs and legs on TV shows and sing songs with suggestive moves and lyrics that would create sexual fantasies,” said Grand National Party lawmaker Ahn Hyoung-Hwan, who belongs to the assembly committee.

GP Basic, a new idol group of six teenagers that includes elementary and middle school students, debuted last month, stirring concern over whether it is appropriate to allow underage girls to perform suggestive dances. Critics say that part of the GP Basic’s song “Game” contains “sexy and suggestive lyrics.”

The Korea Communications Standards Commission in June warned the three local broadcasters - SBS, KBS and MBC - about the suggestive performances of underage idol stars and the broadcasters raised the age limit of viewers on the music shows from 12 years old to 15 years old.

But critics say the decision is ironic, given that teenagers aged 14 and older can watch the live shows.

“The regulation overseeing TV shows are geared to the audience, not teenage stars, who appear on the shows,” said Kim Ki-hwan, an official at the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family.

Okay this performance is their worst. This only reinforces the fact that this is a sign from the gods that they should spend the next 5 years training before coming back. Not sorry that this happened. At least they'll have a sorta-decent teen-hood

I can't watch this properly right now and I'm definitely not hating, but I can't really take that GP Basic performance seriously--I don't know if it's because they're so young, it makes me think of a talent show or something.

But err...
Are songs and performances by girl idol groups too suggestive, given that most of the members are underage?

What about boy groups with underage members? Quite a few of them do suggestive stuff on stage too. It's not just the girls that need to be protected.

Just curious, what's GP Basic's target audience? Cause if they're a group for kids like 6-13, I understand why they're around.

Even though they're still not very good lol.

Date: 2010-09-29 05:43 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] ethereal-limbo.livejournal.com
i think they have the same target audience as the rest of kpop (read: 14-year-olds). not that much off from your estimation, haha.

what really breaks my mind is that they're from the same agency as brown eyed girls...

I've seen worst performances from now very popular groups, seriously, that's so hypocritical. Stay classy omona!

However, I'm glad that their age was a controversy, it will prevent some agencies to use some poor children.

Hm... I like GP Basic's Game (although it took me awhile 'cause I was all DNW TOO YOUNG), but they've really impressed me with most of their lives. However, I really, really wish entertainment companies would stop debuting people so young (boys & girls). It really... idk deprives them of their childhood. Kids aren't really ready for the kind of stress that comes with being constantly monitored by nitpicking netizens. :/

At least, that's what I believe. /shrug

If they're going to go ater females for being suggestive then go after boy groups too ffs.

2pm was stripping on stage when some members were still illegal.

Also if you're getting turned on by a 12 year old on stage the problem lies with you.

But women are the sexual beings, not men...or so a lot of us have been conditioned to believe. Basically men can do nearly whatever they fuck they want without being reprimanded. But in the case of music shows, I really don't mind.

"game" is a good track... but i cannot get into gp basic cause i have nearly over a decade on all of them and uh yeah, that is creepy to me. i agree that the song itself (after watching it with variant subs) has lyrics and dancing that is too adult for 11-12 year olds.

but... BUT!

WHAT ABOUT ALL THE UNDERAGE BOYS? I LOVE HOW A COMMENT WAS MADE FROM SOMEONE SPECIALIZING IN GENDER EQUALITY AND ONLY THE GIRLS ARE MENTIONED.

oops caps.... |D;

Honestly, I watched one of their performances and thought it was pretty inappropriate for a little girl to be dancing like that. I mean, I just think about when I was 12 (10 years ago. lol *old* ;_;) and my idea of dancing was just bopping around like a little kid. I wasn't allowed to watch any suggestive movies, and MTV was totally off-limits.

I guess my point is...kids are growing up too fast these days. I probably sound like the grandma of omona, but I think it's true. I didn't have a problem with the song, but why did they have to be pelvic thrusting and all that? They're dressed adorably, the song isn't bad, so there's no reason to add suggestive dance moves and all.

Sorry to be a total old lady about this, you guys! xD

I don't even care, y'all. Sure they did very well for their ages but we all know the grueling lifestyle some idol have to endure so why in the hell would it be okay for some little kids to go through it? What's the point? This is like the Korean Kidz Bop. It's just unnecessary and pointless, they don't need to be on stage twice a day, they need to be learning their ABC's and how to tie their shoes.
