Top Korean boy band 2PM will be expanding their singing career into Japan in a few months, according to their agency JYP Entertainment (JYPE).

JYPE explained through a press release Thursday that as reported by Japanese media outlets the previous day, 2PM will make a debut in Japan through major record label Sony Music Entertainment in two months time.

"Sony Music and JYPE have decided to go forth with a rare system where both major labels will take part in managing 2PM's career in Japan for maximum synergy," JYPE explained through the statement.

JYPE also said that while Ariola Recods and Epic Records, major subsidiaries of Sony Music Entertainment, will simultaneously promote the band and release their records, JYPE itself has almost completed setting up an office in Japan which will support the activities of its artists in the country and its various businesses.

The release of a DVD titled "Hottest" on November 24 containing their music videos released to date, as well as pictorials and never-before-seen past footage, will mark 2PM's debut in Japan.

They will then hold a showcase named "2PM 1ST CONTACT IN JAPAN" on December 8 at The Kokugikan, a venue famous for holding sumo and martial arts tournaments. Their first full-length album "1:59 PM" will also go on sale the same day.

The six-member band composed of members Junsu, Junho, Nichkhun, Wooyoung, Chansung and Taecyeon, originally debuted with seventh member and leader Jay Park in 2008.

They had made headlines last year however, when Park quit the group after sparking national controversy over remarks he had written about Korea on his MySpace page as a trainee.

He was expected to make a comeback to the group a few months later but was ousted from JYPE in March this year after confessing a "huge personal wrongdoing."

The band has enjoyed a successful career throughout however, holding numerous hits under their belt including "10 Out of 10," "Again & Again," "Only You" and "Heartbeat."

their reactions ranged from =| to D: throughout the entire performance until they came on and they were like ;AKSDJF;AKSDJ :DDDDD ALJSDKF :DDDDD

which was like me the whole time

But...japan like their boys lean! so im not sure if 2pm will do well there. big bang isnt even doing that well in japan tbh, cos they aint the regular je-type idols. GD is the most popular there which talks alot about their tastes (lean and pretty types). im not sure how japan will react to ~beastly~ 2pm. but...then again im /curious how things will play out. maybe we will be surprised haha

Some of the JE boys has muscle, not all of them are lean or delicate. I don't think there should be a problem with it anyway, 2pm might attract different type fan base.

If JYPE is smart enough, they could just pull of Exile kind of style. Let junsu with junho/woo to be the lead vocal while the others just dance at the back.

pull EXILE style hehehe^^ i don't think that's gonna work.. EXILE has it's own young version J Soul Brothers, who weren't so popular when they did the same thing. I think TAKAHIRO was the turning point for their success

I honestly don't see any of JYPE's artists making it big in Japan for some reason.

maybe, the Japanese loves their men beastly and full of muscles, but they don't have those option before.their only option is thin flowery boys, so they loved those thin flowery boys. maybe 2pm will add something to the rack and who knows, maybe they will sell like hot cakes. i don't see the problem with trying.

From: [identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/reminisce__/
As much as I understand that sentiment, I really don't think they need to send another Korean group over to Japan, they already have enough rotating in and out. SHINee is already doing really well in Korea, so I don't really want to see them go there. Not too interested in hearing them sing Japanese rereleases of Replay, Ring Ding Dong, and Lucifer, instead of seeing more musical development in Korea.

Will they call the album "Gogo niji gojukufun"...

Because that TH sound in fifty is not Japan's friend. JYP needs to let companies from Japan have more control if he wants this to work. Sony knows it's own country. It seems like he wants to micromanage everything.

idk if japan doesn't like muscle-y people i don't think 2pm would mind. especially taec, he said he's kind of tired of it and now he just wants to be cute.

such a mind fuck that god made him all hot and manry and then filled him up with cuteness and sunshine lol.

I don't know, to me saying Japanese fans will only like delicate flower-type men is kinda like saying the only girl groups they are going to like are the ones like Morning Musume or AKB48. Obviously that's not true, and I think part of why K-pop is becoming popular is because it's different and that makes it exciting and interesting. Similarly, a big part of why Korean dramas got so popular is because the guys were so different - to use broad stereotypes, they were seen as more open about their emotions, and yes, MORE MANLY. ;)

Whether 2PM will be successful in Japan remains to be seen, and I'm not sure what merits "successful" anyway beyond recouping what's spent on promotion. There are always so many articles arguing and attacking groups based on whether or not they are "making it" in Japan - not being another Touhoushiki doesn't mean they aren't making a profit.

tldr; I also giggle every time I see "Ariola" records.

Date: 2010-09-24 10:02 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] liime-arix.livejournal.com
But Korean dramas in Japan are mostly popular among middle-aged housewives who themselves have 'manly' husbands. If you read articles about Japan, the flower type/herbivore guy is extremely popular, that most guys change to suit that type. It has to do with women, and their fathers and the previous era of men changing from manly/hardworking/aggressive type to the femme/going at their own pace/introvert type. And in that way, women are becoming more aggressive. Even THSK said they had to lose their muscles while in Japan and gain them back while in Korea, to fit the ideals of each country.

Also, Japan always had non-cutesy girl groups, so 4minute, SNSD and Kara are nothing new at all.
