Sungkyunkwan Scandal and Playful Kiss both premiered last week to lower-than-expected ratings. Both were highly anticipated dramas starring idols with big fanbases, so it came as a disappointment when both were dealt low single-digit ratings.

Weekend rebroadcast numbers have come out, and both dramas put in respectable showings in the reruns — not outstanding, but solid. Sungkyunkwan‘s original broadcast brought in 6.3% ratings for both its episodes, and the reruns drew a 5.3% and a 7.1%.

Playful Kiss had an even more difficult premiere, with a shockingly low 3.5% and 3.7% for its first two episodes. Its rerun numbers came in at 4.2% and 6.6%.

Rerun numbers aren’t usually brought into the discussion unless the original broadcasts were very low, which is the case for both these dramas. They’re also not usually worth getting excited about unless the reruns are very high — say, double digits. For example, My Girlfriend Is a Gumiho premiered with a 12.7%, and it was an added surprise when its rebroadcast drew in an impressive 16.1% rating. But there’s consolation in the fact that Sungkyunkwan‘s and Playful Kiss‘s rebroadcasts outperformed the initial airings.

One Playful Kiss rep said, “It’s true that the original ratings were very disappointing. Because the rival dramas are solid, I think we’ll have a hard time performing as high as we’d expected. Even after Baker King Kim Tak-gu ends, it’ll be difficult because the following drama is Runaway. However, since the rebroadcast ratings came out high, it’s been a big support to the production team who are working hard on the set.”

A Playful Kiss producer said that the “real battle” begins on the 16th, after Baker King ends, and that they are comforted at overseas and online reactions to the show.

lol I had to think for a second which one was the husband and which one was the friend and then looked at the icon and remembered that you love hyun joong and don't particuarly fancy yoochun.

anyways, I guess this is good hear. Any kind if improvement, albeit small, is good.

SKS is okay so far, I haven't seen the third yet, but I'm probably going to continue watching. Surprisingly I am liking playful kiss. From what I read of the tawainese version, it sounded like a typical drama of a desperate girl who pines for a guy who does not show any interest in her and is rude to her or something of that sort, so I wasn't sure what to think of the korean version, but I adore it. I guess it's a good thing that in the korean version the girl is not as stupid, well from what I hear. Hyun joong's acting is meh. I mean he's improved, though that's not saying much, but he's tolerable. Imo the girl should tone it down a bit, but she's charming.

guys I'm so happy that kim hyun joong is bearable. I was one of the people that was very apprehensive. He has improved. A+ I hope he keeps getting better

I wasn't really expecting to enjoy Playful Kiss - mostly because of HJ's acting in BOF - but I did. The first episode wasn't horrible, but it definitely dragged in the beginning and didn't really pick up towards the end. The second episode was much better, though. Hyun Joong's acting has improved, but he hasn't really had to stretch his acting chops yet so the jury is still out on that one. But his acting is definitely more tolerable than it was in BOF. I think this role suits him better. Not to mention, he looks very, very sexy. And HJ and the female lead actually have chemistry! \O/ The supporting characters are pretty entertaining as well.

the supporting characters are great. I love the other guy, the "danny from grease" wannabe. I know I'm going to end up feeling so bad for him towards the end. I think him and oh hani are actually cute together, but I know they will not be together. Though I do like hyun joong's character (forgot his name) and oh hani together as well, so it's not too bad.

I also love the two friends and her father. That one scene where they were in the car singing together in the first episode and when he like ran to her after the earthquake and kept saying "I'm alive, I'm alive" were adorable.

His mother is cute as well, but kind of creepy imo.

Both are pretty bad but Playful Kiss has cute editing so I find it more bearable (I guess). I love Sungkyunkwan the novel. It's too bad the drama is this..bad.

I know he's speaking a certain way to fit the era, but it's so stiff and uncomfortable sounding that I unfortunately skip over every one of his scenes -_- Which just means I'm watching this for Song Joong-ki and Yoo Ah-in.
