In relation to what Filipino celebrities tweeted during the very dramatic hostage crisis held in Manila hours ago, several Korean celebrities who visited the Philippines have also tweeted their worries and prayers.

I hope to God this isn't true. That was one person out of 92 million Filipinos in the world, we don't need this right now. ):

Date: 2010-08-23 10:39 pm (UTC)The police are so stupid for letting this crisis drag on for too long (there have been opportunities in the afternoon when he could have been shot in the head, but no...), not to mention our brilliant display of lack of training during the assault.
The local media are so stupid for feeling that they are above standard protocol, providing real time information about the police whereabouts all while the criminal was monitoring the whole thing on the bus' TV.
And lastly, the president (being the commander-in-chief) is stupid for keeping silent about the situation for far too long. The chief executive of Hong Kong has been contacting him but to no avail. Gee, I wonder why.
Sorry for the long rant.

I wonder if we have trained hostage negotiators who could've dealt with this incident resulting in non-violence and no death? I know he committed a crime but I don't believe in shoot to kill as a first course of action. Clearly during the assault, you can see lack of proper equipment from the police end to deal with the situation (using a hammer to break down bus doors/windows that can withstand more than 50kg of pressure..really???) so it's not far-fetched to think that we didn't have any qualified nor trained hostage negotiators to facilitate the whole thing.
I think the media was irresponsible in broadcasting a live feed of everything that was happening. In situations like these, media blackout should have been implemented. Even BBC commented it was highly irregular that the police allowed the media to cover the whole thing.

Date: 2010-08-23 10:47 pm (UTC)I pray for the victims and their families. I hope this incident does not become a singular measure for all Filipinos and Philippines as a country.
With that being said, so nice to hear/see support from kpop celebs.

Date: 2010-08-23 11:12 pm (UTC)A relative of the hostage taker commented on air: "Gusto niya lang ng katarungan(He merely wanted justice)." F*** that. Nobody has the right to kill anybody. And so much for uplifting the image of the country under a new administration. You remember how that HK journ referred to Pinas as as a nation of domestic helpers? Now we shall be hailed as hostage-taking murdererous freaks.

Date: 2010-08-23 11:30 pm (UTC)This exactly what we dont need right now stuff like this freak people out my mum was all stuff like this happens alot in manila but not to the scale(she lived there for years). tbh i did think that the swat force should have been more prepared (British media slaughtered them for being so disorganized in an emergency). Although im not gonna let this change my opinion of the philipines still love the country.

Date: 2010-08-23 11:59 pm (UTC)Petty crimes happen a lot in Manila much like the same in any populous country all over the the world. This situation is isolated and rare to happen.
Yes me too. Despite Philippines reputation, I still love my country. No matter which part of the world life takes me, it will always be my home ^_^

My heart and prayers go out to the families affected by the hostage situation. It was all just completely terrible and could've been handled better by the government, police and media.

Date: 2010-08-24 01:08 am (UTC)Okay I seriously need to get this off of my chest.
Date: 2010-08-24 01:31 am (UTC)And you can't blame or seek PNoy because frankly speaking, he's carrying the aftermath of everything. People have been asking last night where the hell was he and why wasn't he on the scene. Well what could he have done? And even if he did go there and tried to negotiate, don't you think he'd become a target as well? We can't exactly deny that Rolando Mendoza was already deranged. If we let PNoy out, we'd just get backlash of being "irresponsible citizens who don't think about the safety of even their president."
Plus, the police weren't exactly as stupid as people make them out to be. Some acts were stupid but saying they're stupid is just no. Hauling his brother to jail was stupid but in a situation like this, we can't be too sure anymore. Sure they were slow but they had certain measures to follow. They can't just go in and possibly endanger the lives of the hostages even more. Not to mention that most, if not all, of them have families to think about as well.
Lastly, it is the media's responsibility to inform the public. They did cover this not to inform the suspect, they did this to inform the public. It was an inevitable consequence but it comes with their responsibility. If they did a full media blockout, people would be complaining about the (lo and behold) government censoring them from what they should know. Quoting President Aquino, "If we ordered a news blackout, you'd tell us we were guilty of censoring you."
If people think (or "know") they could've done better, then they should've gone to Quirino Grandstand instead.
