SM Entertainment Hits Jackpot in Sales

With K-pop’s biggest celebrities working daily for the company, there’s no doubt in the fact that SM Entertainment probably has the largest income in the industry.

Behold. It has been calculated by Korea’s Financial Supervisory Service that SM Entertainment has made around 47.5 trillion Korean won during the first six months of year 2010, which roughly converts to 40 million dollars in USD. This is about 59% larger than what they’ve made last year.

Also, it’s been revealed that SM Entertainment has earned over 18.6 trillion Korean won, over 3 times as much as last year. SM stated, “This achievement was possible due to increasing overseas income made by our artists like Super Junior, BoA, SNSD, SHINee, and f(x).”

SM Entertainment believes their income will increase even more, as they’ve been slowly entering the application market for various smartphones. Also, SNSD’s overseas activities are expected to bring [in] even more money for the company.

A market research of the music industry was conducted by SIP revealed the CD sales for the first half of 2010. The total sales for singles and albums was 120.6 Billion Yen, which was a drop of 7.4% from the same period last year. Although the revenue from singles increase by 1%, album revenues decreased by 10%.

I wish SHINee was a bit more popular :| Perhaps SM should just work on them musically since the poor things, save for Onew, are still rather awkward on shows. I do think Japan would be better for then than SNSD since it did wonders for DBSK's lives. Though the initial months/years are grueling.

SME built a tradition of fans buying albums... They put so many unnecessary but important photo book with hundreds different cover and convince you that you need to have all of it..

BTW, the first time I got into dbsk fandom (like being a stan), I was presented with HOT fan letter that said, if you can, buy the album, if you reach buy multiple copies! cause that's the only way they got payed...

I think it might just be because its Korea. You know that whole smaller population, weaker currency stuff where what we think is small... is a bit or may be lot more to them? Its like when I went to Indonesia for holiday where we could basically eat at high end restaurants everyday or buy 'expensive' clothes at about the same cost that you would spend on average in Aus.

Kind of like how when they sell 100,000 albums and get excited about it as if its a million...and we're just like but Japan/America does that in singles...

I shouldn't even be saying anything cause I know shiz about economics and life.

Don't know if this before or after payment...cause they don't call strictly profits or sales...

Apparently according to some, SHINee isn't that popular in Korea. They have a pretty good following internationally (what with two spam posts when Lucifer PV came out omg) but 2PM is/was/became a whole lot more popular than they are, and they debuted around the same time. They're praised for singing well and they get awards but they don't get a lot of advertisements, variety spots, or sell well digitally ;x

And that didn't help with that period of pseudo-inactivity save for Minho on Dream Team/Star King and random tv shows. Hello Baby was awesome though but not as popular as SNSD. Plus the poor things are still kind of awkward on variety shows lol.

I'm hoping that will change with Lucifer...if anything I think they would do better in Japan because it seems like Key already has decent Japanese pronunciation, and they have a good foundation in live singing.
