This Saturday will be "Kim Yu-na Day" in Los Angeles, under a resolution passed by the city council on Tuesday (local time).
The Olympic figure skating champion will be in L.A. to accept the Proud Korean Award from the Korean American Leadership Foundation, and the city government decided to honor her visit with the designation.
Kim is scheduled to arrive in L.A. on Friday to attend an event where she will sign the resolution at City Hall. She will also donate an autographed pair of skates to be permanently displayed in the municipal building.
Founded in 2006, the Proud Korean Award honors Korean Americans whose globally recognized achievements made their country proud. While Kim is not Korean American, she was selected as this year's recipient since she made Korea proud in the world. Also receiving the award on Saturday will be Sammy Lee, the 1948 and 1952 Olympic champion in diving.
Past recipients include Chun Shin-ae, the director of the Women's Bureau of the U.S. Department of Labor, and Paull Shin, a member of the Washington State Senate.
