Big Bang...too good to be called IDOLS?

Say what? Most people would believe the group Big Bang would easily qualify as idol stars since the group is arguably the epitome of all successful idol groups these days.  However, famous music critic Yim Jin Mo doesn’t believe so, as he thinks the group is “too good” to be called idols at all!
The man appeared on MBC FM4U’s Date in Two O’Clock, and revealed, “G-Dragon brought undivided attention with his solo album he produced himself last year. Technically, if one member in a group is able to actually write his own song, we can’t call the group ‘idols.’
Like Michael Jackson and Justin Timberlake, they were able to break the idols barrier and began to write songs on their own. This is the biggest success point of Big Bang.”
He also gave his criticism, “I hope he puts more effort on songwriting and widens his creativity.”

On a serious note, I already thought that Big Bang wasn't much of an idol group. Not because they write their own songs, but rather because they don't whore themselves out on variety shows too much.

An idol's selling point is their looks and personality, while Big Bang's is their music and other talents like acting. So yeah, just stanning here :)

this sounds a whole lot like "oh, big bang should split up."

I agree. I appreciate him praising Big Bang as a fan but I don't appreciate what he's basically saying about other groups. Contrary to popular belief, there are lots of talented people in idol groups - YG just allows his talent to be more involved in the creative process so it tends to be more obvious with them, imo.

They are idols that are allowed to write/produce their own music. I think there are a lot of idols that would be able to write well if they were given the chance. SM trainees take classes in composition and most idols are very good at playing instruments.

I feel when groups are labeled as idols, their talents are automatically discredited. yeah there are many untalented ifols but I think most given them less credit than they deserve. The converse is simply not true. It's not to say that those with talent are not idols.

but the way he puts it (with MJ and JT as examples) is that once out of a group u're better than an idol ...? idgi. i don't like how he worded it :/ it sounds weird and makes other idols look bad, cuz there are many that are talented and songwrite. i feel like there are better ways to word it. this just brings about eyebrows.

and about the idol thing, isn't being an idol somewhat defined as being a role-model? ... the definition has be scratched up so bad i don't even know what it is anymore.

Big Bang, at least to me, never looked like the "idol type" of band. Maybe because even his music sounds like non-idol, right?

Pop... chewing gum pop (like I call all comercial pop these days) is not Big Bang style at all. Also, I don't think is YG style either, I mean... look at his artist... Se7en, 2ne1, Lexy (when she was on the company), Big Bang... It looks more like USA/Western music.

Still... that part when he says that when an idol write and compose his own music, is not an idol... Men, I love this man xD That's SO true. That's why Jae, Yoochun and Junsu are different from other "idols", they know about music, they can write a beuatiful lyric and that's why they would be so succesfull.

In the end... Big Bang and G-Dragon or Taeyang... are like a breath of fresh air in the kpop industry... thank Jaysus they exist *W*

There's definitely other groups who take part in the making of their albums but Big Bang is definitely a group who takes part the most in their music. I'd say that's mostly because of the freedom YG gives them though.

I've never really considered Big Bang to be idols to be honest. Like someone else said above an idol's main selling point is good looks and personality. They go on shows and use those things to make it big. Big Bang doesn't do that and it's more about the music with them than anything else so they'll always just be artists in my eyes.

But again in the end it comes down to which company a group is under and how much freedom they have.

because it's true. These days, most idol groups do suck. I mean a lot of the new groups can't dance or sing, have mediocre songs etc so in the year of 2010, I think BB are in another category of idol groups, just like DBSK would be if they were still together and like a lot of people have pointed out, they're mostly known for their music at least not only popular for their eye smile, s-line, who their ideal type etc.
