North Korea remains out of the blacklist of countries supporting terrorism that was published last Thursday by the United States, in spite of the torpedoes hitting a South Korean boat. Washington maintained the same four countries on its list: Iran, Sudan, Syria and Cuba.

In spite of the calls sent since the shipwreck of the Cheonan in March for Washington to put Pyongyang back on the blacklist, North Korea has been spared this measure in the annual report of the State department on terrorism, that covers the year 2009. At the end of June, the American diplomacy had estimated that the torpedoes weren't an act of terrorism, but a provocative operation occurring between two armies. On the other hand, Iran remains the “principal state support of terrorism” because of the support it brings to the Hamas and Hezbollah, according to the report.

well isn't there speculation that NK wasn't the one who did the submarine torpedoing???

I forget who it was but someone (Castro I think) said that it was actually the US who blew it up.

There is indeed such speculation (and not just from other dictatorships, if I'm remembering correctly), but I believe the article is saying that the reason NK wasn't put on the list is because 1.) the report covers material from 2009 and 2.) even if it covered 2010, the sinking- if it was carried out by NK- wasn't in fact an act of terror, but more of a show of arms type thing.

ya I don't understand why people would be calling for them to be put on a terrorism list for acts of war.

*shrug* North Korea's kind of an easy target and (this is my personal speculation) by making it seem like the US government isn't "taking a stand" against a country universally viewed as a bad guy, those opposed to the current administration can claim that they're being "easy on terror" etc. etc.

I'm very cynical about politics :/

(Sadly, neither will I, but Changmin's ability to do so makes up for the inability of most of the world's population to do so)

There's always the 2010 list...?

I figured as much. I'm surprised, really--I knew there was a lot of pressure here to consider North Korea a terrorist nation.

Thanks for all these sources! You did a good, thorough job with this. :D

LMAO. It's my 2nd - except I speak it 100x better and write it 500x better than my 1rst one. I'm far more fluent in my 2nd and 3rd (english) language than my first one.

More or less? I'm Canadian; born and raised in Montreal. My parents are from Vietnam however.

So basically viet is my first language but my schooling was in french up until I graduated from HS. Then after I chose to study in english from CEGEP and on but I grew up on mainly english tv shows so I was already bilingual; skipped a grade in english when I was in HS (could skipped more, according to my english teachers).

You woulnd't happen to be Quebecoise too, would you?

LOL I KNOW WHAT YOU MEAN. I was always typing out "CEGEP (post-secondary/pre-univ college)" and tarbanak that was annoying.

LOL oh god, I slept in all my english classes in HS - and somehow I was always teacher's pet or favorite but no one hated me for that. They either felt bad for me and were just amused because it was obvious I didn't care about being the favorite - and was always in top3 despite always being in my own world. There were cases where I was better than my teachers. Unfortunately in my classes we didn't do enough actual grammar and that all that shmuck so all those verbs tenses and shit, I never formally learned it much - my friends were formally taught those in their classes though. D: But I guess that's what happens when you not only skip a grade but also go into the "classe d'anglais bilingue" of the grade above yours. I had one english teacher that was majorly cool though and he was always "whatever, I don't need to quiz you for your oral exam, I already know you're fluent" and my teammates would be all "HEY WHAT THE HELL SIIIIIR!?".

What HS/cegep were you in? And where are heading in univ?

I used the tense that seemed right and it USUALLY was right.
My instinct is good because of all the reading I did, I guess.

Lol same.

I left Vanier with a social sciences DEC (started out in health science though) before going into psych at Concordia. Decided to stop last year but I'm trying to get back into school at Universite de Montreal (education au pre-scolaire/primaire).

Yup, Mtl. It's an english cegep in the "ville St-Laurent" to be more specific... and right beside Cegep de St-Laurent.

yes, he's been issuing rude statements about the US for the past month or so. really hurting Cuba-US relations!

Hurting? When have US-Cuba relations been good?

US-Cuba relations have actually been getting much better lately and a lot of people were upset that he issued the statements accusing the US of bombing the SK warship because it set back the progress that was being made.

Doesn't terrorism have to be against the population not an army to be considered terrorism?

And yeah, aren't there doubts that North Korea was the one who attacked the ship...

I dont think that definition would be correct, cuz otherwise the US should be placed on this list tbh.

The sinking of the Cheonan wasn't really an act of terrorism so I don't know why people are pushing this. @____@ North Korea may be run by psychotics but they've not really crossed into terrorism completely yet.

O_O Interesting article. I bet the Republicans are gonna FREAK over this one..... ugh I can just feel the migraine this'll cause coming. t_____t

But tbh, I've always thought that the phrase "acts of terrorism" usually implies that the aggressors are attacking an unarmed or civilian party in order to create fear. Even if the official definition of terrorism only encompasses any violent act made to usurp a government, if we included every single country that attacked/threatened another country on that list, every country would be on it by now. We're already doing military drills in their back yard and sanctioning them, not to mention we've publicly committed to backing up SK in this conflict. What exactly would putting them on this list achieve, other than creating drama back home as we debate endlessly over their eligibility to be on a list that most likely won't have much of an effect on the way we deal with NK, anyways?

And on a completely ot note, congratulations on your first post bb! :D Lookatchu, being all awesome translator-ey and shit. XD *sniffles* I'm so proud!

Like, I know that North Korea and the US are some of the most powerful countries in the world, but seriously, until there is CONCRETE proof, the US needs to stay out of this situation. People are on edge, they do not need some other country butting in and acting all a fool when there is clearly no need for it.
