A South Korean newspaper claims Russian investigators have found North Korea did not torpedo one of the South's warships that sank in spring. The report says the vessel hit a mine.

Russia has not yet commented on the story.

The "Cheonan" sank off the Korean peninsula in March, with the loss of 46 sailors.

Earlier, a US-backed international investigation found Pyongyang responsible. However, Pavel Leshakov, the director of Korean studies at the Moscow State University, says the conclusion is “almost 100 per cent political.”

Full video interview with Pavel Leshakov can be watched here

Russia sent its own team of investigators to the region last month.

North Korea has continuously denied any links to the incident.

The incident has made the tense situation on the divided peninsula even worse. But it could potentially develop to become even uglier, says investigative journalist Wayne Madsen.

“This is very critical, because if there is a smoking gun – this could have been a set-up, this was some sort of accident made look like hostile action or it was some sort of false flag attack, this could result in war against a nuclear armed-country, North Korea,” Madsen asserts.

Pyotr Razvin from the Diplomatic Academy of the Russian Foreign Ministry, believes despite the high tension, the chances of an actual war are limited.

"Both North and South Korea see the perspective of a war as mutually assured destruction. If a conflict were to erupt, the Korean peninsula would be economically devastated. Besides, neighbouring China has no interest in a war on its borders either, be it a nuclear or not."

South Korea said there where no other ships at that time besided two from North Korea. But actually there where 13-15 other ships from the U.S and South Korea

Well given the histories of the countries involved and the fact that the U.S. report is also the U.N. report, combined with the fact that the U.S. really has no good reason I can see for lying in their report and I can think of a few for Russia, I'm gonna trust the official report more than the Russian one.

Lol I don't think we do, honestly. I mean, I know public opinion would definitely not be in the President's favor if he got us mixed up in another war, adding on to the two we're already in. But I agree that we all just want KJI to shut up and take up knitting or something! :D

And what's wrong with a russian report compared to an american report?

From: [identity profile] taylorrenee-ily.livejournal.com
Russia and China are NK's two biggest allies. Ofc Russia is starting to earn peace with the U.S., but I still don't see them being entirely reliable in their reports. Besides, the U.S. has nothing to gain from lying about this. The public would not support another war, and if it's proven that the U.S. is engaging in a form of war-mongering by lying in the report, President Obama would end up in deep shit. His approval ratings are low enough.

And lying in the official report would be enough to give NK more allies, because it would be seen as a U.S. vs NK thing, and the U.S. has a lot of haters as it is. I don't see this ending in war, but exacerbating the tensions for no good reason with no clear goal in mind is not very smart to me.

Russia, however, has a few reasons I can see for lying. First of all, they are a communist country and they support China and NK. Second of all, while Russia and the U.S. are moving towards peace, I'm sure they'd still jump at the chance to discredit us. And third of all, they have a lot more power internationally than NK does. If they use their power to help out NK, it could scare other countries into leaving NK alone and it could put pressure on the U.S. to back out of this conflict. That would make America more enemies, which I'm sure Russia would like to see happen.

xD I'm almost surprised at the response you got but I guess it's to be expected though. Still, seeing how awful the NKorean Government can be, I have a hard time understanding why other countries want to be their allies besides the whole old connection with communism. So idk, a country that would ally with another country that does things to an extent like NKorea isn't going to suddenly make me think that if they report that their ally is innocent that it's to be trusted. The report condemning them had U.S. support, but wasn't the whole U.N. involved in the investigation?

US is SK's allie. US are capitalist like SK. In fact your arguments could go against US as well... Although I don't know what the Russian public opinion thinks of a new war but there is a big possibility they would be againts a war considering their past.
I have no real opinions on the matter, i'm not a specialist i just learn history at school, but at least I can assure that. And I don't trust US, SK, NK, and Russia. That's why it's a bit difficult to find an answer xD.

MTE, Russia and China are North Korea's 2 biggest allies so of course they wouldn't find any fault with N. Korea. Honestly, no one will probably know that truth about what happened but either way, a US or Russian report is going to come out biased and if S Korea or the US wanted to go to war with N Korea they'd do it regardless of a Russian report which comes several months AFTER the fact.

Agreed! Lol besides, I can't see what SK has to gain by either bombing their own sailors or using NK to cover up a military accident.

I am getting tired of having reports that say one thing and then be disproved by another report that comes out by another country that is on one side or the other.

Set ups, truth, lies, war, destruction...
What else? I know one of these countries is going to pull something else out of their ass.

I'm American and I don't like how anyone is treating the situation.

Every ambassador and political group assigned to these state affairs are being completely moronic. I know I'm going to get at least one comment telling me to go hug a tree or something, but really we need peace and we can't get it if everyone is going at each others throats in a passive sense.

I fucking hate this.

hugging trees is a really nice feeling you know lol but omg i totally agree with you. Being serious, i don't even know why i bother to read these reports if they are somehow always biased but i can't help myself because this really has me worried since i feel like I'm no control of it ah.

I also don't like how this is being handled at all right now. It really sucks how everyone in the political field is always doing something for their own convenience eventually fucking things up because of that.

When will it end ;____;

of course! i mean it's cool that at least some people even read the article and have something to reply with ^___^ so much respect for that! if people would just state their honest opinion on matters with thinking about it for a while, it would really help the world a little more.

It really would help, there are some people, especially in America that aren't even fully aware that is happening at the moment and that is really shocking to me. It's just crazy how some people don't care sometimes :/ it's a really scary thought.

I really only pay attention to the current events posts and Big Bang posts... well YG. xD

Yea, it might help if the politicians paid attention to anyone's opinion except their own. ):<

I know exactly what you mean. Most people are completely unaware of anything that is happening in any other country let alone their own. I just don't know why people don't even pay attention.
*Sigh.*

Any way, once again thank you for having a wonderful conversation with me. I enjoyed talking to you. Wanna be friends? :)

if you get my point
Russia has power.China has power
America?I don't think so.
Why don't you people let the two countries(NK and SK) to take care of their own problems?

Date: 2010-07-30 07:27 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] booksandsarcasm.livejournal.com
If SK doesn't want the U.S. involved then I would think they would give more signs then... participating with them in a military exercise. I'm sorry, I just hate when people say 'why don't you let them take care of it themselves' unless the country has a majority that has stated that they don't want that help and the U.S. is butting in (which has happened before) and disregarding that. Like for example, Taiwan. If it didn't want to take the arms deal that got a certain Government in such a fit, it didn't have to. (unless you argue political pressure but I doubt that's the case seeing that there are hundreds of missiles pointed at them across the strait.)

True but USA(and Russia and China) on their behalf have privileges coming from these conflicts. For example guns, tanks or whatever has to do with military supplies. So they are looking for chances to get involved.I know that what i'm asking for is unbelievable but my country is also a victim in the hands of a "great" power. If you walk at the streets everybody will say "We don't want them to be involved in our country's problems".Do anything happen? No.And i really hope that someday we(people of this country) will take control of things.

I'm sorry if there are mistakes in my english.I can't fully support my opinion to this matter due to my lack of english skills.
