Just days after we reported that SS501's leader Kim Hyun Joong was spotted having a private meeting with Bae Yong Joon, news of his contract expiring hit the media today. Apparently Hyun Joong's contract with DSP Entertainment will expire next month (June 8th) and there is much speculation as to whether or not he will re-sign with DSP. There are three main rumors circulating about the issue: the first being that he will leave DSP and SS501 to pursue acting, second that all members of SS501 have already unofficially renewed their contracts already, and third that Hyun Joong will leave DSP but still be a member of S501.
Hyun Joong is definitely at a crossroads and this contract decision could be huge for him if it is even still an issue. Personally, he is experiencing an explosion in popularity. His popularity began to grow when he starred on We Got Married (WGM) in a virtual marriage with singer Hwang Bo, then it blew up with his much loved yet ridiculed portrayal of Yoo Ji Hoon in Boys Over Flowers (BOF). What followed for him was numerous CF offers, photo shoot spreads, acting offers, and appearance requests.
As a group, SS501 continues to gain popularity internationally. Many fans who got to know Hyun Joong through his stints on WGM and BOF eventually became fans of SS501. The three member sub unit of SS501 made up of Heo Young Saeng, Kim Kyu Jong, and maknae Kim Hyung Joon also had a huge success with their mini album UR Man and two hit songs on the BOF OSTs "Because I'm So Stupid" and "Making a Lover." The fifth member, Park Jung Min had a successful run as Danny Zuko in the Korean run of the musical Grease. In 2009, SS501 regrouped and released their Rebirth mini album and their sold out tour of Asia, Persona. The group was to release their next album on May 1st of this year, but the release got pushed back with no new release date mentioned.
The crux of Hyun Joong's decision will depend on whether or not he will do what may be best for him or what would be best for SS501. Although it would be possible for the group to continue if he leaves DSP for another management company (Shinwha did something like that), the likelihood of it depends on a lot of compromise and negotiations. Many are saying that Hyun Joong could possibly be thinking of joining the same management company as his best friend Jae Joong of the embattled DBSK with him basing his operations in Japan to further his expansion into Asia. The trio that rebelled against SME Jae Joong, Micky (another close friend of Hyun Joong's), and Xiah sued their management company for unfair 'slave' contracts. The whole matter has been dragged out and ugly creating much tension within DBSK with many thinking that they will eventually disband. Others believe that Hyun Joong's 'secret meeting' with Bae Yong Joon could also mean that the actor might be considering joining Yong Joon's new entertainment company which he developed with JYP. I can imagine that fans of SS501 are anxiously waiting to hear what will come of Hyun Joong's contract negotiations because of the ramifications it could have on the group.
No one can blame Hyun Joong for leaving DSP, many have said that they have never properly promoted SS501 (along with their other acts) and that if they had better management they would be bigger than they are now. DSP have also been incompetent in protecting their idols, a perfect example being Hyun Joong having to withstand the netizen wrath after being seen at the party of one of Korea's ex-presidents. As a fan, I'm hoping that whatever he does decide to do it will allow him to still be a member of SS501.

IDK, I agree on the DSP thing. I wish they had promoted *all* of their groups better. And since SS501 is my biggest bias forever, I really want them to stay together. But w/e the boys see is best for them, I guess. TT__TT

But the company seems to give a ton of freedom to their celebs and most of them seem to like their company.
I hope HyunJoong doesn't leave SS501.
