With more and more groups splashing onto the music scene here in the fourth generation of K-pop, rookie NMIXX is the latest to throw their hats into the ring.

Produced by K-pop powerhouse JYP Entertainment, which houses globetrotting acts like boy band Stray Kids, the septet entered the K-pop fray last week with an ambition to follow in the footsteps of the likes of Wonder Girls, MissA, Twice and Itzy.

The seven members of the girl group -- Haewon, Sullyoon, Jinni, Bae, Jiwoo and Kyujin, all of whom are Korean, along with the Korean Australian Lily -- boldly marched onto the music scene with the debut single “Ad Mare,” released Feb. 22. Lily competed in the fourth season of TV competition “Kpop Star,” coming in fourth.

All born in the 2000s, NMIXX is JYP Entertainment’s fifth girl band. The band‘s name is a coined term combining “n” and “mix.” The letter “n” stands for now, next, new and the “n” sign in math -- an unknown value. The combined “NMIXX” is meant to convey that the seven bandmates are the faces of a new era and they will show their diverse charms throughout their promotions.

During an online press conference held Tuesday, the rookie group looked back on the route to their debut, saying it was no walk in the park. Lily, in particular, spent more than six years as a trainee at the company. But as they have devoted much time and effort to enhance their singing, vocal and dancing skills, the bandmates are eager to set off on their shared musical journey.

The event was initially set for Feb. 22, but was postponed after some bandmates tested positive for COVID-19 that day.

The band said the title of their debut album translates into “to the sea” in Latin. And in line with the definition, Bae said, “Just like how the album means heading to the sea, a place where we‘ve dreamed of, the seven girls are marching to that place.”

Leading the two-song package is the poppy “O.O.” NMIXX said the lead track opens with strong trap-based beats and swerves to Brazilian funk and teen pop-rock.

Jiwoo described side track “Tank” as “a song that shows NMIXX’s confidence and how we are ready to go against the world by telling our stories, which is why we likened our energy and confidence to a tank.”

When asked how they felt when they heard the tune for the first time, Kyujin said she had felt as if she was in a completely different world. As the melody and rhythm of the song continuously changes through the music, she thought “O.O” would be the perfect song that could leave a bold mark in people‘s minds.

“It’s a song that shows NMIXX‘s musical identity and that we can have many charms tailored to us,” she added.

Talking about the music video of “O.O,” leader Haewon said the clip shows NMIXX discovering an unknown world, which is a crucial point to keep in mind while watching it.

Although the rookie group faces an uphill battle vying against other artists and bands, Jinni said they are starting with a smaller goal: promoting the group to a wider audience.

“Since it’s just the start for us, we want to make bold marks by showing who we are, and we would be more than happy if music listeners would listen to our song and watch our performance stages,” she said. Jinni also expressed hopes of NMIXX winning new fans through their debut promotions.

Sullyoon meanwhile talked about listeners outside the country during the event to say that she is learning other languages to better communicate with them. She added that she wishes to go abroad and perform for international audiences if the pandemic situation eases.

At the end of the press conference, NMIXX said they want to be a group that triggers people’s curiosity. “I want people to look forward to our performances and, hopefully, people are enjoying ‘O.O’ as well,” Sullyoon said.

The two-song package released at 6 p.m. on Feb. 22.

Pardon me while I pretend this is their actual title track instead -

JYP, this is NOT you! Why was the superhero part not its own song/the debut and the other part of O.O ALSO its own song or even just the intro track. I still like Tank best - though I don't get what being a tank has to do with being freaky or fishy?? also it took me AGES and a lyric video to realize they're saying 'Like a tank, I'm-a - and hope we can swap it out for music show performances for them but lawd jesus is this a mess!!

I think this song would have actually worked.

Also I can enjoy the song a bit more when I'm not reading the translated lyrics :D

I seriously don't understand why they didn't go with freaky fish. The have a catchy line and the point dance is far more memorable/iconic.

I wonder if they were going to go with it until they got money to do a song about coke.

Say what you want about JYPE, but they produce some great performers. I particularly loved the choreo during Tank's bridge.

There’s a little part in the O.O choreo where the members do a little makeshift swing and swings one member back and forth. I found that to be so cute and inventive.

the group definitely performs well, but I can't help to compare them to itzy though. it seems like they sang live also, which is nice because I really wanted to hear vocalists. Haewon sounds good, and Lily probably (but they need to stop making her scream). I'm surprised Sullyoon is a vocalist, she sounds a little like Sana, and damn is she gorgeous.

I thought Jinni would be the centre but it seems they're making Kyujin centre also, which I'm not really sure if it's a good sign because of how young she is

This is a strong debut performance.
I don't know how well their song is charting because the title track is so ...disjointed and has really weird lyrics.

On the other hand, the girls did really well. This really showcase strong vocals from Lily, Haewon and Sullyoon. Sullyoon seems more relaxed here than in their first performances. Would love to see them live with a quieter backtrack. I'm a bit worried that Liliy's voice will be hoarse by the end of this promotion.

Maybe they will perform O.O for the first half and then Tank on the second half of the promotion period.

Last time I checked they’re still not in the top 100 for Melon, idk how the other charts look. This debut went really poorly so far. Maybe now they can actually promote it might see some progress but idk part of me feels like they should focus on Tank and see if does any better.

Funnily enough they sold really well already, 200k+. Either JYP might treat them like a bulkbuying boy group or might go in a new direction to chart better next time. I’m very curious about their future comeback now lol.

I thought they were selling well because of the massive pre-order number which is based on hype rather than people liking the album.
Agreed - Maybe the public will like it more once they see them perform it in music shows.

I don't think O.O will get a first win unless it suddenly gains popularity. Most of their targeted audience (high schoolers?) would have heard the song by now and have made their own opinions on it.
If they follow the traditional rookie comeback schedules, we should get a new song in a few months. JYP will either stick to this type of sound(s?) or will try something new.

That’s definitely true a lot of the sales are preorders. I’m still seeing some big single day sales for Hanteo but I saw something about different version was released? Maybe people are buying for collecting purposes. Along with the comeback sound I’m curious what their preorders will look like next time.

Honestly the girls are charming and with the right song could really show it off. It makes sense they can perform since JYP prioritizes performance. I hope they have a better chance to shine in the future.

They’re a big4 group so they’ll be fine. One bad song is not going to be their be-all end-all. They’re very talented, pretty, seem very entertaining on stage and offstage, etc. Honestly this might even work in their favour because more people will tune in to their cb just to see if it’s an improvement (and that won’t be too hard, I hope).

I do think people went overboard with the hate tbh. Not liking a song isn’t an excuse to be shitty towards kids. I’ve seen some really vile comments from losers hiding behind a computer screen.
