Flashback Friday
2022-02-18 02:34 pmHappy Friday! I had breakfast burritos at the beach this morning, nothing can ruin my day. Every week I go through the charts for this day in the past and share the top three songs. Then I pick out two more from the top ten as honorable mentions. This week, we are going back to the 3rd week in February, 2010. Some of my most favorite K-Pop songs this week! Ladies take the top three, so I gave the honorable mentions to the boys.
#3 Girls’ Generation “Oh!”
I loved this era so so sooo much! My favorite SNSD era, so freaking cute. And the song is in my top three from them, too. This is the lead single from their second album of the same name. The song would peak at the top spot, and would end up being the second biggest selling single of the year. Let’s take a look at one of Music Core’s random stages. Here’s the girls doing the song at an indoor ice rink. How are they not slipping? They must have laid down something on the ice. I imagine it to be slippery. I don’t…I don’t ice skate.
#2 2NE1 “Follow Me”
This song was originally made for a Samsung CF, but was later included in their first album. It was their first release in the 6 months following their debut era, and the song wasn’t even announced until a few hours before it dropped. The song would peak at the top spot. At first there was no MV for the song, since it was just for a CF, but the song was a hit so a month later YG released a video. Almost makes me want to put on some heavy eyeliner.
#1 Kara “Lupin”
My most favorite Kara song! I knew from the first listen that I would love it forever. This is the single from the EP of the same name, and the follow up to “Mister”. It was the first time that the girls showed a more mature and chic concept. I loved it so much! Hara whipping around that ponytail? Perfection tbh. Here’s one of their stages at Music Core with some great fan chants. Miss them so much.
Honorable Mentions
#4 2AM “Can’t Let You Go Even If I Die”
This is still their biggest selling song. It was the lead single from their debut EP of the same name, and their big breakout hit. This was the bestselling song of 2010, beating out Girls’ Generation’s “Oh!” by about 40,000 in sales. The song would top the charts and give the group their first music show wins. They would also win at every year end award shows, including multiple Song of the Year wins. Here’s a live band performance of the song from an online concert from last month. They still sound so good, to nobody’s surprise lol.
#6 CN Blue “I’m A Loner”
This was the group’s Korean debut, because they officially debuted first in Japan in 2009. This was a damn successful debut, it is still their biggest selling song. And also damn ear-wormy. The song would peak at #2, with the album at the top spot. This would also give them their first music show trophies. At the time, it was the fastest that a newly debuted group won a music show trophy, just about two weeks after debut. That record would last for 4 ½ years. They would go back to Japan in March for promotions, and continue going back and forth for the rest of the year. It’s been a while, so let’s check out the MV again.

Date: 2022-02-18 11:00 pm (UTC)What was SNSD's top selling song for this year, was it Run Devil Run? idk why I felt like Oh would have done better...but idk Run Devil Run was kind of A Big Deal bc of the concept switch.

Date: 2022-02-19 02:59 am (UTC)I never saw that performance of Oh before... They must have been cold! I wonder if there's something on the bottom of their shoes to keep them from slipping..?
It's been ages since I've seen or listened to Follow Me but I love early 2NE1's music, though I didn't know Follow Me was for a commercial.
I know Lupin was quite famous, but I don't remember it... my favorites from Kara were Mister and Step
I love this whole era

Date: 2022-02-19 09:36 am (UTC)I hated it xD but it was so damn catchy I couldn't stop singing it and I wanted to be Jessica SO BAD. Especially after I saw her on RDR, that blond hair inspired me to destroy my hair several times.
Remember when it was forbidden to show the belly buttons and the girl's stylists had to find clever ways to cover it? Never I ever saw so much issues with a belly button since Rainbows A

Date: 2022-02-20 01:27 am (UTC)OP I love your commentary, I felt the same about Lupin when I first heard it, it started the 'dark, chic' concept trend for that year.
I think my personal fave track from back then was f(x)'s NuABO, that changed me from fan to completely obsessed with them. I know it hadn't been released at this point but wow, what a year for kpop.
