Oscar-winning filmmaker Bong Joon-ho will likely come back with an English-language movie based on an unpublished U.S. science-fiction novel on clones, with Hollywood star Robert Pattinson likely in a starring role, U.S. media outlets reported Thursday.

According to Deadline and other news media, the South Korean director is preparing to adapt Edward Ashton's upcoming novel "Mickey7" into a film with Warner Bros.

Robert Pattinson, one of the most-sought after actors in Hollywood, is in talks to star in the untitled film, likely written, directed and produced by Bong, they added.

"Mickey7," which will be published in the first quarter of this year, is about a disposable employee on a human expedition sent to colonize the ice world Nifheim who refuses to be replaced with another clone, called Mickey 8.

Bong was interested in filming an adaptation of "Mickey7" after being offered the manuscript of the unpublished book around the end of last year, according to news reports.

The film would be Bong's first project since "Parasite," which swept four Oscar prizes, including Best Picture in 2020.

And it will be his third English-language project, followed by "Snowpiercer" (2013) and "Okja" (2017).

bong joon ho got a better than usual performance out of chris evans in snowpiercer, and robert pattinson tends to step up when he works with interesting people (claire denis, the safdie brothers, robert eggers, etc) so i'm kind of excited to see where this goes

It's not the most innovative plot in scifi ever, but these themes are always interesting and Bong Joon Ho can do something really good with them. I'm more interested in how the writers/filmmakers twist the expectations of the genre to tell their stories. I'll check reviews of the book once it's published and might pick it up.

Pattinson has made interesting movie choices ever since he finished Twilight and is committed to them way more than the "mainstream" projects... so while I'm not particularly his fan, I think it can be a successful match. Funny how it went from "why would he go from HP to Twilight" and doubting how long his career would last, to getting so much praise for more indie/artsy films lol. I really would have not expected it.
