Date: 2022-01-14 09:37 pm (UTC)Hyunseung-Jiwoo: I feel like they are a good duo. This was a good attempt at diversity and not just because they did a 180 from last crop, but because they switched it up on the song’s original themes as well. It was nice. Jiwoo doesn’t do the sweet play in the snow and clouds kind of girl perfectly but she was fun. Overall a consistent duo.
Hyolyn-Taeil: I like this in sections. I hate that middle part. 8282 is a song I really like but have never heard anyone deviate from because it’s one of those kinds of songs. You do what you have to do because it’s ALREADY an impressive number (pun intended). I’m also surprised Hyolyn hasn’t sung this yet, at least to my knowledge. Not saying it’s a BIG standard but I think a chunk of the vocal divas of K pop have already sung this at some point in their career. Anyway Taeil has a great voice and does well but I definitely think Hyolyn was still carrying them because this song is a woman’s big voice “ballad but not a ballad” pop song. And that middle section sucked.
ChoA-Donghan: it’s been years so I feel this is a safe space: in AoA, ChoA used to sound like she was grating her vocal chords with a cheese grater and then smoking a pack of newports after. She just always sounded…harsh. I haven’t kept up with her channel so I don’t know if this performance was a fluke, but I hope not. I don’t know what she did during her time off but she needs to continue. Again another performance that needs the female vocalist to do some heavy lifting. Hope is not my cup of tea and I’m fine not drinking it. The performance was meh until ChoA took off. Not enough to save it. The children’s choir is parsley (not always needed but appreciated when done right).
Minzy-Inseong: one of my least favorites of the night. Like it’s not like some of my other not favorites where there is something I actively dislike. This one is square in the middle. That being said: I do like the way they handled the chorus. Mixing their vocals for backgrounds to make it sounded like a multiple people singing it was a good idea. And it sounded good to me. The dance section was better here than last weeks. Oddly enough I think Inseong did a lot more heavy lifting vocally than Minzy (same thing happened with Taeil). I don’t think Minzy is a weak singer, far from it. But I definitely think two performances have shown her male counterparts’ abilities as a singer while she continues to highlight her dance skills (this dance made much more sense).
Seulong-Monday: Not Abel influencing the girls. This performance suffered from not enough drama or chemistry. Seulong didn’t do a lot so most of the performance was put in Monday’s shoulders, who is a sweet girl. A baby. A toddler. She’s 19. And she reads as such (actually she read vaguely younger and older but that’s just the fresh idol smell tbh). There is going to be discourse about this performance so I’m gonna let y’all have that. What I want to focus on is the fact that Monday clearly was not the girl for this particular get up. This is one of those times where you can tell an idol doesn’t have the range for what they are doing. Monday was trying to be a seductress, trying to be sexy, trying to be tempting. And it wasn’t that. Hyolyn just had her comeback and I can go watch Layin Low performances and see the energy that Monday is SUPPOSED to be giving. That final part when her and Seulong were singing together was meh. Like they sounded good, but I was like…where is the flavor? The edge? There was no seasoning in their interactions. I don’t want Seulong leering and preying over her not do I want Monday to perform like an object (which is what’s happening anyway). But wooo…we would have gotten a better performance with somebody…more seasoned.
Overall these performances were better.

Date: 2022-01-15 10:49 am (UTC)i am not familiar with 8282 but i reaallly liked this rendition, hyolyn killed it!! her outfit was cute too
hello choa singing in her regular voice??? she sounds lovely, she had to sing such high pitches in aoa, we were really missing out. i actually wished she had sung this just by herself 😬 or that they'd left out the rap sections and just sung everything. the stage was pretty. the children's choir was a bit too much for me
i think inseong and minzy's voice suit each other well but i wasn't really into this stage, it didn't really go anywhere for me — it was just fine for me. either needed more commitment to the story/concept or the singing, since both of their voices are great, instead of dancing. minzy looked pretty despite the slightly ill-fitting romper
monday has suuuch a good voice but this performance had no chemistry for me
was there a particular theme to this round? thanks for sharing op, this was a fun watch!

Date: 2022-01-15 11:15 am (UTC)Hyolin for me carried the song, but I don't think there's anything she can't sing (I'm bias so take my thoughts with a bucket of salt)

Date: 2022-01-16 11:28 pm (UTC)8282 is good, but like everyone else said, it relies on hyolyn to carry it but i think their voices worked well together
not too big a fan of either the hope or must have love performances. they're definitely not bad but there's parts that i feel didn't work together and then didn't appeal to me
i like monday and i think her voice works foe this type of seductive song but you can clearly see how young and rookie she is. especially with how bright and age appropriate weeekly's music is, it's just a little jarring. also i think seulong wasn't really selling it — his voice and performance were both very sweet and reserved, which didn't really work for me
does anyone know if this is going to be subbed? i'd love to watch purely to see the reasoning behind some of the decisions
