OMONA Predictions 2021: the reveal + share your predictions for 2022!

Welcome back to our annual prediction post here at OMONA, which is already in its fifth year! Wohoo! Never thought that I'd continue this series for so long but I clearly have no life and we're still in the middle of a goddamn pandemic so any distraction from the chaos going on outside is a welcome change. TRUE

• Aespa will continue to rise. The girls and their beep boop bitches had several comebacks this year with one of them taking their success to the "Next Level".


• Ex-IZ*ONE Kwon Eunbi to debut solo. After Izone disbandment she opened the "Door" to her solo career.

PARTLY TRUE

• EXO will make a group comeback. The boys did indeed come back with a new album and, to everyone's surprise, Lay found some time to participate in the recording and even sent his CGI brother to the MV shooting.


• CLC disbands. While Cube still hasn't formally announced the disbandment of the group yet, members Elkie and Sorn have left both the group and agency this year and Yujin participated on Girls Planet 999 where she confirmed that the group is technically done.

NOT TRUE

• Dreamcatcher will get their first music show win. The girls had 2 comebacks this year but sadly none of them got them first place on music shows. Maybe next year?


• APRIL finally gets a breakout hit. Well, the group definitely made some headlines this year but not with their musical output. Instead we got a bullying scandal and the girls have since been on hiatus.


• BTS will have a dating scandal. Every year we're hoping for one and this year we could have had it aaaaaaaaall, but... nope. Jungkook did have a rumor with Lee YoonBi but that got denied real quick. V got photgraphed with a chaebol daughter at an exhibit but that god also denied.


• Lay leaves EXO. Again, we're wishing for another exodus every year but he's still part of EXO (and even participated in their comeback this year!). However, his contract ends next year so fingers crossed that I can finally check this one off the list in 12 months.

Another shitty year is over but thanks for keeping me entertained during these though times, OMONA. Wishing you all the best for the new year!

aespa is now a top girl group so they certainly did rise! They had a massive year in 2021 with two hit songs.

If Dreamcatcher announces a January comeback I think they have a decent chance! The odds are against them but with them being on the few girl groups that sells 100k+ they have a good chance. But I’d have to see if any boy groups who can move album units are having a comeback in January lol. Kepler too since their preorders are already over 200k??? That’s impressive!

And MAYBE if they get on Queendom but idk how they can be on it if they’ve never have won. It just sucks that they have intl support but their Korean fanbase is significantly smaller so with the shows prioritizing Korean fans (which is nothing wrong with that really) = Dreamcatcher will always struggle. :/

Some of my predictions:
- IVE is going to solidify their spot as a top girl group after their strong debut doing really well on sales & charting
- Seulgi solo PLEASE OMG!
- Weeekly finally having a local hit! I’m glad After School did great internationally but I hope much like Dreamcatcher they get local recognition.
- JYP’s new girl group will either be a successful debut or my honest prediction is a Twice debut where their initial debut song does well but their 1st comeback is a smash hit, just because I feel like there isn’t much hype around them besides them being a big 3 group? Not like when Itzy debuted, their hype was huge!
- Big Hit’s gg finally debuts. Idk if this is a prediction, I think they said early 2022? Or was I imagining that lol
- STAYC being the breakout star on Queendom 2 if they go on the show of course. They’re already doing great and I see Queendom really pushing them further.
- fromis_9 getting a boost if they go on Queendom
- Somi is revealed to be dating someone (I’m
the least committed to this idea I just thought I’d try a dating rumor lol)

I’m very intrigued how g-idle could go, it feels like they’re in limbo. I can see diehard Soojin fans abandoning them for kicking her out but they still could have a successful comeback since there are fans who still love the other members and the general public has moved on.

I’m guessing there will be predictions on Twice as 2022 is THEE year but I’m not touching those since I’ll just get sad. 🙃

This is from the 2020 post that I made this comment. This will definitely continue with more gen 3 groups disbanding. But that’s not much a prediction but more just common sense with how kpop contracts work. If not disbandment multiple members leaving at least.

Big Bang is expected to comeback in 2022 right? I see their comeback being huge.

Oh and final one: 2NE1 surprising us with a reunion song! Idk if we’d get a full comeback but maybe something like T-ara did with them paying with their own money. Now that they’re all free of YG it’s looking optimistic.

I would looove a 2NE1 special song! I think the moment would be right, with them being out of YG indeed, and the general public being interesting in "older group" (like T-Ara or Brave Girls rising on charts out of nowhere). 2NE1 were industry giants, people would definitively check on them

I can see Hyuna and Dawn surprising us with a ‘we’re married’ reveal. Or at least getting engaged. Hyuna at some wedding did one of those activities that predicts who will get married next or in the upcoming year (I’m clearly not super knowledgeable on this topic lol) and Hyuna won so idk I’m really sure she’ll be married. The tradition I think also implied if she doesn’t marry in the year they’ll never get married which has implications of breaking up 👀

i'm not the best with predictions but ... i'm pretty sure i've never participated in any of these before so let's go!!

- to kind of jump off of dior_chic's speculation about the hybe girl group: i think there's meant to be three debuting in the coming year? the main group (with sakura and chaewon), the group helmed by min heejin and the i-land group. i think they'll all end up doing well, but they'll also end up overshadowing each other? i could also see the i-land group becoming the most popular or being really popular right off the bat (when you consider how well enhyphen did from the get go).

- a member of shinee will either be revealed as dating or openly reveal that they're dating themselves. bonus points if it's one of them getting right to the point and dropping that they're getting hitched.

- at least one group between april, dia, momoland and day6 will disband.

- sooyoung and jung kyungho will finally get married. (which i figure is a long time coming anyway.)

- the dispatch could for new years will either be someone that i-fans could care less about or, like, jungkook and yoobi.

- a comeback for taemin will be announced within a month of him finishing up his dischargement in november. (2k23 - the year of taemin.)

GOT7 release a full album as a group before the end of the 2022. Bam Bam continues to surprise and impress with his solo musical output.

Hybe groups will get hit with scandal after scandal after scandal and it will damage the company's success in a big way (what goes up, must come down!)

Aespa will have a string of flop singles like RV did after Bad Boy, knocking them down from their top 4th gen gg spot. IVE and JYPngg will surpass them since people will get tired of their low budget ae concept and questionable styling

StayC will have a breakout single that makes them popular with the GP

IU will be revealed to be dating an ugly guy that's older than her, since that's her type

Kai will get into another dating scandal

Jennie will also get into another dating scandal. Maybe with a foreigner. I don't think she's still dating GD

Jennie will release a fashion line/fashion collab. Or a solo.

V will get into another instagram related scandal. Man's not very bright...

Jeongyeon won't re-sign. Neither will Chae and Tzuyu.

YGngg's debut date will depend on how badly Jisoo and BP's image will tarnish because of snowdrop. If the fallout isn't too bad, YG won't debut their gg in 2022 (even though they said they would)

Minho will get a pet. Idk loll. I feel like he's not with Irene anymore and might be single rn.

An NCT member will have a shotgun marriage

The webtoon " A good day to be a dog" will get a drama adaptation. With Kim Goeun as the lead maybe lol.

Everyone but jae will resign with jyp. Jae pulls a mark and goes back to the US to stream the way he wants to.

Txt dating scandal? I can see it being Kai and a nugu but it will blow over quick as “they are just friends/caught chatting at a cafe” the boys will tease him and I’ll love it

On a sad note I predict this will prob be the last year I’ll listen to kpop 🥺 the scandals in the beginning of the year were so rough on me mentally and the last few are just disgusting. I would leave all together but I like the people here and some groups are still good! I wanna hope for the best but :/ time will tell

So I did a loooot of predictions last year. Let's see which one held up lmao.


- Chungha recovered and released her album <3
- BoA keeping a low profile was true in 2021, but sadly most of it was due to losing her brother :( Glad to see her back with aespa and Girls On Top, especially as a mentor/leader of sorts after having such a long solo career. It's a nice opportunity :)
- Half-assed/not super impactful EXO/Red Velvet comebacks, SHINee comeback before enlistement, D.O music debut, Itzy full-length album, Kwon Eunbi solo debut, GolCha dark concept as main and funky bside as second promo, Yukika mini... I guess I just did a bunch of very likely guesses lmao, one of the company debuting their post-IZ*ONE group (IVE with Starship).
- "Rose finally gets her solo but it's disappointing" lmaooo



- TVXQ DID show up on Kingdom but as hosts lmao
- I predicted aespa to rise with a more mainstream song... They did rise, but not with what I consider a mainstream song lmao.
- Also predicted a full-length retro album from Sunmi, we got a majorly retro-inspired MINI album though :)
- Jeongyeon did more promotions than I expected her to, I hope she's doing ok right now <3 TWICE overall did SO MUCH MORE than I expected, what a strong year for them!
- I predicted more focus on fromis_9 from their company after IZ*ONE's disbandement - they changed company but Pledis is investing and promoting them so it half counts I guess?



- No SNSD special single, no Taeyeon album, no Sunny solo debut, though we at least got one Oh!GG track and a Sunny featuring...
- I predicted an ambitious GFriend comeback in spring and they DISBANDED. I'm still heartbroken.
- I also tried to manifest Lovelyz staying together two more years and they DISBANDED. I wasn't confident about that prediction anyway but it still hurts ;__;
- HOWEVER I predicted Laboum's disbandement and they rised back on the charts and had their comeback!!! + I was worried about GWSN and they CAME BACK!!!
- I really wish AKMU had left YG.
- Chaewon did not joined Rocket Punch, Woollim probably got some money selling her trainee contract to Big Hit and I'm sure the group will be very successful once they debut!
- Lisa's solo wasn't too delayed but damn I wish it had been.
- April did not get a breakthrough hit :'D
- Dreamcatcher did not get their first win but they had solid promotions. Loona did not have that much success and I hope 2022 is better for them. At least Haseul is back <3 Everglow didn't have a popularity rise but no drop either?
- APink only had their anniversary single, no early 2021 goodness :(
- Ryu Sera did not follow up Miss Baek with new music but her youtube videos are very cute and she looks happy doing them so I'm happy with this outcome :)
- Jellyfish didn't went bankrupt so far lol

Now onto my predictions lmao:

I'LL MANIFEST A GODDAMN SNSD SPECIAL SINGLE/COMEBACK EACH YEAR UNTIL IT HAPPENS.
More seriously : busy year for Taeyeon and Hyoyeon with Girls on Top & their own solos, while the rest of the girls stay mostly focused on acting/hosting.
Crazier bet : a Tiffany comeback, whether in SK/US, I'm actually surprised she hasn't released original music in so long.
Craziest bets : a fully promoted Yuri comeback + I really want a mini-album for Sunny.

I expect aespa to still do good as SM really focuses on them.

No solo comeback for BoA but she'll be active as producer/mentor for other group (obviously I would love to be wronged).

TVXQ comeback saying that Yunho has reflected.

I was thinking of EXO members leaving but besides Lay quietly not signing again, I actually don't know? Chen could stay as all but officially retired from idol life, I don't know if Chanyeol/Suho/Kai would want to go anywhere else, D.O will depend on how much he wants to focus on acting. Overall I'm betting on a Soshi, pretending to still be together but not doing much.

I bet that Red Velvet will stay another two years but focus on solos.

Maybe a NCT dating scandal? We kinda had Lucas this year but with how many members there are, I'm surprised things aren't more messy.

Even though I’m a kpop fan of 11 years, I’m so bad at these. I’ll try to make some though…

-more 3rd generation girl groups will disband, marking the end of the era
-chuu will continue to snag CF deals left and right, making her well on her way to become the next it girl of kpop
-Loona comeback in February as always, another stupid ass symbol title for the mini album name. They continue to sell more albums than their previous comeback while continuing to struggle financially bc bbc can’t make business decisions to save their life

I love doing these things because I am never right.

Gen 3 girls are going to get phased out. Right now the Gen 4 girls are pushing ahead so I can see some of the gen 3 girls starting to crack.

TWICE are up for renewal next year and are likely starting contract negotiations now...I can see a couple of them not signing back. Jeongyeon is the easiest low hanging fruit. To be spicy, Mina, Tzuyu and Chaeyoung. No I will not be elaborating. Because of their schedules I don't think an official Korean release is going to be a big priority.

BlackPink are going to do something, but not immediately as to stave off the controversy of Jisoo's show. Lisa will get another comeback as will Jennie make her long awaited one. Rose will become more recognized internationally.

Laboum gets a hit.

Red Velvet will have a more stirring comeback. Queendom was safe, but this next one will be more explosive. Also Seulgi will be pushed more as an individual. She is the only one that kind of doesn't get that push, but with RV sort of on their last legs (not really but K pop), Seulgi seems to be the most dedicated to the company. They may start giving her more to compensate. Yeri however is likely to be a flight risk.

Itzy will start more solo opportunities with Ryujin or Yuna going into acting. Chaeryeong will see a rise in popularity as well. Fans will start to rewrite their success as something akin to f(x) in that it was in spite of JYP, as a new girl group comes into focus.

Queendom will prove to be more lucrative for this crop of girlgroups, which will have less big names but more luxurious stages to keep up with Kingdom. At least two Gen 2 acts will be there, but it will be dominated by Gen 3 and 4 groups.

SNSD will come back together officially. They waited until their 15 anniversary because 5 and 10's are better for celebration tbh. But also to be messy, Jessica and the group will finally acknowledge each other, and SM will be okay with it.

Sistar will come back together for something musical.

More Gen 2 and maybe some Gen 1 vets will make returns. I think Brave Girls may set a precedent with more attempts. It started this year, but next year will be more companies willing to allow more older established groups to promote again. We wont see a rise in older idols DEBUTING, but comebacks.

Due to how the pandemic is going, a turn to more comfy solo acts will see a rise which will prove dangerous to K pop's entire foundation.

Black Swan gonna see a rise in popularity.

Aespa are going to have a decent year and people will hop off their nuts once a new big GG debuts. We will also see Wynter slowly take over as the main girl of the group, even eclipsing Company fave Karina. NingNing will grow as the underrated pick who is "mistreated". Giselle will be ignored.

The new GG of ire will either be YG or Hybe. Take your pick.

Somebody will do something racially insensitve. People will moan and cry about cancel culture only for that person to never see actual consequences, and I have even less time for K pop fans attitude toward anti-blackness.

looking back at my 2020 predictions, oof not many were true. but hey I at least got some right, so here goes my 2022 ones.

- Soshi will have promotions for their 15th anniversary. it'll be an 8-membered activity and no mention of Jessica
- got7 does not have a group promotion, but release an anniversary single or fan song. members continue with their solo endeavours and have the other members join in the challenges
- red velvet goes on queendom 2, and after that ends off their group career silently
- twice announces their future plans (either re-signing or members taking long hiatus) after their world tour
- the new 4th gen groups debuting do not have the impact (except probably for the hybe ones) and take a while to get into their groove
- IOI has a commemorative single/promotion because their own groups continue to be middling
- WJSN has another subunit debut
- more 2nd gen groups collab for songs/performances

I've never really done this before but!

- INFINITE will finally have their post-enlistment era comeback after Myungsoo is out, and South Korea will eat it up
- FNC is going to push more SF9 members on broadcast dramas bc of the mess with jhi and sd, and someone's popularity blows up by playing the second male lead of a KBS, MBC, or SBS drama
- SF9 surprise 2nd full album before 93z enlist because it's FNC and they will take any opportunity for selling merch
- fromis_9 wins on a public broadcast music show and gets their first full album
- Kep1er will have 2 comebacks and a special single this year, and a member will feature on another artist's MV, which leads to chaos among fans because it's not their fave
- A TWICE solo debut? Maybe Jihyo or Nayeon?
- RV's KR comeback gets pushed back to the 2nd half of the year because of solo schedules
