Several NCT members have come under fire from netizens due to their inappropriate behavior upon receiving an earthquake alert during a live broadcast on December 14th. In response to the backlash, Doyoung, Mark, and Johnny apologized through social media.
At 5:19 PM on December 14th, a 4.9 magnitude earthquake occurred approximately 40 kilometers off the coast of Seogwipo city on the island of Jejudo. Almost immediately afterwards, a mass emergency alert was distributed to Korean citizens’ smartphones. NCT was conducting their NCT UNIVERSE Countdown Live when sounds of the notification came through from a staffer’s phone and the members joked around at first, thinking it was one of the routine Covid-19 update notifications (but unlike pandemic notifications, emergency alerts are delivered with a siren-like alarm).
However, they were quickly told that there had been an earthquake in Jejudo. Doyoung then mentioned ‘Earthquake,’ one of the B-side tracks off their album, and Mark started singing a few lines before being told to stop by the others. Johnny started dancing before being pulled back into his seat.
After the live broadcast, Korean fans and netizens criticized the members’ behavior as an inappropriate and insensitive response to what could have been a very serious situation. Doyoung, Mark and Johnny all apologized through their Instagram stories. However, some netizens further criticized their choice of medium, since stories are automatically erased after 24 hours.

Mark wrote, “I want to say that I am deeply sorry for the image that I showed of myself during today’s comeback live broadcast. I am really sorry for misjudging the situation and acting carelessly and rashly. I will reflect deeply on myself and work hard to never show behavior like this again.”
Doyoung wrote, “Hello, this is Doyoung. During today’s comeback live broadcast, I made a rash mistake without properly recognizing the situation. I want to apologize for those who were hurt and felt uncomfortable because of my frivolous actions and words. This was entirely my mistake, so I apologize again without excuses. I will work hard in order to not make a mistake like this again. Once again, I want to say sorry to those who were hurt by my actions and words.”
Johnny wrote, “I am very sorry for my rash actions during the comeback live broadcast. In future, I will be more careful about my thoughts and actions. I am really sorry. I want to apologize again to those who felt uncomfortable while watching my behavior.”
As of December 15th, no death or injuries and only mild property damage have been reported as a result of the earthquake. But Jeju citizens and authorities remain wary of continuing aftershocks.

They are very lucky there weren’t actually any casualties
