i need to call the DMV and see if i can do a permit test before the end of the year, so i'm a little anxious about that whole thing 🥲 i passed a practice exam online so i'm sure it'll be fine; it's all stuff i've learned over the years while being a passenger.

OH also my poor dog is pretty much blind now :( it seems like it happened so quickly, but i feel like i noticed her eyes getting cloudy before she ever starting having signs of diabetes. there's no point in dwelling on it, but i wonder if we could've held the blindness off if we had her checked out earlier. she's getting around just fine but it has to be scary for her 😭😭😭

i have a trip to the PNW coming up in 4 months and i need to just go ahead and buy my plane ticket, but my mom has been freaking out about omicron and telling me to reconsider...... even though it's too early to know if this will be as bad as delta. but listen y'all, if i have to be stuck in my house for a 3rd year, i will go postal 😊 (obviously i won't actually do that, i'm just tired of being shut-in ಥ‿ಥ)

i meant to post these last week but was so tired i just blanked on them 😔 my 2nd time this year visiting a local waterfall!! it was nice to see it while some of the fall foliage was still around. gave me a chance to use some of the new camera features i have on my phone too.

This week started like a weird horoscope reading, "Cancer do not leave your home this week but don't fret if you do, lost things will find a way to come back to you."

Aside from that it's been a pretty meh week. We're moving at work so most of our energy has been between doing month end work/ December work and moving. I'm obsessed with Stray Kids and Kai's new releases and I started this python boot camp on udemy and I'm loving it so far.

The new variant is considered more contagious but milder at the moment and as my state has recently increased in cases I wouldn't be surprised if we already have it here. Multiple relatives that have gotten covid-19 say they don't test for which variant a person has when they get diagnosed.

happy weekend everyone! hope everyone is doing well.

it's been a while since i've been excited about a kpop release so i was so relieved when i liked kai's album lmao! however, i just know that after his online concert is over he (and sehun probably as well) will announce his enlistment 😥

speaking of the army: i finally watched DP on netflix and . such a great but painful drama. i knew that the army wasn't the nicest place but to actually see the abuse play out like that and knowing such stories have taken and still take place was horrible. i'm just happy that there were some lighter moments as well to calm my anger and sadness down but then you had the end that just totally broke me. definitely a hard watch but i very much so recommend it!

i've also started watching now we are breaking up to see sehun in it but i find it such a weird story and difficult to get into. the supporting roles are fun and interesting whereas i find the lead couple quite boring and annoying lmao! they are both incredibly gorgeous but they don't give me much. i also definitely don't want to judge song hye ko's acting skills buuuut her acting seems quite bland... maybe it's because we're still in the beginning of the show so maybe her character's personality will expand more. her bestie on the other hand is quite interesting! i can't wait to find out what'll happen to her, her health and her marriage. i was also quite surprised by sehun's acting! it's quite fun seeing him play the annoying yet nice rich kid. yeah idk if i'd recommend it...

dp really was one of the best dramas of the year imo, together with taxi driver i'd say! i had never seen korean media tackle the military like this (there's probably more shows/films that do, though). i loved the stories every episode, the acting was great too and, like you said, i also really appreciated the lighter moments in the show. i'm hoping we'll get a second season!

(wow and kai's going to announce enlistment soon?? i didn't realize...)

hello omona! i just saw a local billboard ad with momo promoting glutathione pills (which are ostensibly for detoxing, but lbr people use it to ~whiten~) and coming after that brouhaha of the group promoting skin whitening products in thailand, it kind of made me laugh. but i've not seen anyone come after momo for it, probably because it isn't as big a news (but then i haven't exactly been searching around for it either). 🤷

Date: 2021-12-03 06:24 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] dior-chic.livejournal.com
I think it’s because I saw it being promoted as just skincare, unlike the Scarlett one they don’t have whitening in their name and a lot of us don’t know that brand.

I do side eye it but ultimately it’s a paycheck for a brand idk even Momo knew existed either till it was presented to her. It’s a losing battle since colorism has such a strong grip on these countries and I’m sure these idols don’t get why it’s so harmful since their experiences are so insulated.

hey, omona. i've got a question for you all, and to reference a tiktok sound, don't come for me cause i know y'all like to tussle. it's a question i've been meaning to ask for like, nearly a year now, and put bluntly it sounds kind of mean, but i'm not trying to be mean, and i'd genuinely like to open a little discussion or even just make some people think. my question is, are you still enjoying yourself here?

i ask this because over the past year-ish i've noticed some of you are really quick out of the gate to criticise well, pretty much everything - a release, a drama, an interview, an awards ceremony, anything. obviously there's things that do deserve criticism (and a lot of awful people and news), and i think we can have really nice discussions about them when we do criticse/discuss them (like, most recently when we all discussed world war ii and the education around it and nazi imagery), which is one of the things i like about omona. but a lot of the time it's not that, it's about the stuff that i thought was what people liked and why they were interested enough in kpop to be in a community for it (and yes i was going to ask this a few weeks ago but i purposefully waited until the weki meki comeback was over so you didn't think this was me being bitter about it lol. i am bitter! but not that much). i honestly feel like 80% of the time the ontd kpop roundups are actually a nicer place to be than the omona comment sections, and they're often just pretty neutral about things!

i also ask this fully aware of the couple of years the world has had as a whole, and i know from being in various ffa's that a lot of us are having a bad time from more things than just that. without armchair psychology-ising, i was wondering if maybe some of you hadn't noticed that you were sort of using this hobby (for lack of a better word) to air your frustration? and if it's not something external, what is it that keeps you coming back here? is it the community? because i do remember having nice times with a lot of you and i sure would be sad to say goodbye, but there's also times when i've been less into kpop and tracked it less and i've just not been present on omona and that's worked for me, so idk.

i really hope it's obvious that i'm not trying to attack anyone i just sort of - am i the only one who feels this way? is it all in my head? am i just the annoying aggressively positive person in the friend group? is it just my undiagnosed behavioural issues that make it really difficult for me to judge tone and interactions? idk

anyway on a lighter note i'm in the midst of bleaching my hair to go purple-blue-green-mermaid-whatever. i bleached it last weekend and i've been doing conditioning stuff on it the whole week. it's been so long since i did it and i'm so excited! i ordered proper salon bleach products and not just a box kit from the shop, the whole hog, got my partner in to help me.

Please don't think I'm not taking your Q seriously bc this is short, but lately it seems like people conflate 'criticism/first to id problem' with being cool (subconsciously). Perhaps it's also connected to kpop being less niche.

Or people just love to criticize/complain more than celebrate. 🤷‍♀️

I hope you get some thoughtful and reflective responses.

i think people are critical more here purely because its the only safe space i can think of online to say negative things about popular kpop groups lol, like if any of us posted similarly negative things on twitter or something you'd have intense fans going after you. and i personally see it as a good thing people don't feel obliged to be entirely positive here but yeah you do get some over the top negative comments but usually people are just trying to be funny and i personally find it easy to tell but i know not everyone finds it as easy to read tone over the internet.

as a medium i've been trying to, if i'm saying something negative, put it under a spoiler cut (though i don't always remember) so that i can be honest if i want to but if a fan of a group really isnt in the mood to see that negativity and it would affect their mood and they just want good vibes to enjoy the comeback then they can avoid it

I will admit that when it comes to issues that affect me personally, I tend to be a bit more negative. I think like kyungwons mentioned, this is a relatively safe space where people don't come after us for no reason. and for me it is one of the few spaces I can rant about stuff, especially issues pertaining to toxic masculinity/asian identity. I do try to avoid commenting on stuff that I'm not too familiar with though.

but I still enjoy consuming kpop, and I think it has also made me more conscious that since nobody really is a saint, it's better to just enjoy some stuff on the surface rather than really delve or immerse myself in

I officially joined Omona in May and I really do like it here compared to, well, the cesspool that's stan twitter lol. I'm relatively new to Kpop — got into it in the beginning of the pandemic. I started with stanning only one group but being here on Omona (and ONTD too) helped me slowly branch out and discover a whole lot of other groups and acts so I really do appreciate this place a whole lot (this is how I discovered my ultimate fave Taemin🥲 though that was long before I officially joined)

Alot of you guys are kpop veterans and have been so kind and giving with your recommendations (like you have op!) or answering my many many questions lol. I also enjoy that there is room for discussion and not "THIS IS THE BEST THING EVER" comments here. I feel like people are honest here and allowed to feel less than stellar opinions, which for anyone who's ever been on kpop Twitter knows that there is absolutely no room there for that lol. So this place is probably an outlet and safe space for alot of people.

And I have to say I do appreciate that people are open about the hushed/controversial aspects of Kpop too.

Also, stan twitter scares the crap out of me lmao so I do rely on Omona to keep me in the knows about new comebacks (lol like even for new faves like twice and old faves like Kai) and mv drops.

All-in-all happy to be here 😊❤️ and I appreciate your posts!

I do enjoy coming here but omona definitely has some issues it can work on. I’ll ramble more under the cut:

Pt.1

*any use of ‘you’ is extremely general for the most part

1. I think the major decline and why most of us will leave eventually is age. The maknaes are now 2007 liners, that’s too young for me. Also what teens consider cool I have an inclination to not get. That’s super normal haha. A good example is Kai’s release, I think it had mostly favorable opinions since we’re an older crowd, it’s not ‘noisy’ which I am noticing that older listeners have issues with generally speaking, and EXO is well liked here. I love music, so I might still be checking out new releases regardless, but my attachment will wane. I might just indulge in the indie and r&b side more since it’s majority adults over there. But it’s natural to move on, so if people leave since they’re uncomfortable will all the young teens and the music not pleasing them anymore I don’t blame them. Just don’t go on tangents all the time, that gets old VERY quickly. That can go into my next point though

2. Negativity does attract more comments. A good example is aespa and Blackpink. They don’t have a large fanbase here, but their MV posts? Get tons of comments. Yes there are other groups favored here that get comments but these two get a lot, mostly mocking or overly critical. It’s even worse at ontd. That’s why I made my comment in a post since it’s kind of frustrating seeing all those groups and people vocalize that they love or like, but they don’t get comments while these two can get 130+. I’m like Why aren’t you commenting if you like them? Reading is nice, sure, but it takes time to make posts sometimes and getting little reactions does feel like time wasted. From your initial comment I’m assuming this can be a good example as you put effort into these roundups but only get a few comments. It is frustrating, I get it.

3. But also though while there is sometimes lack of positivity to counteract the negativity, one highlight of Omona is getting people to analyze songs and go into detail why they didn’t like or why they love a song. I think it’s great! If it was like youtube where it was constant screaming ICONS LEGENDS QUEENS/KINGS and other stan speak, I’d been gone lol. Also related, if it felt like I couldn’t share my honest opinions because I know it’ll upset someone, I’d comment less to avoid problems. Luckily though people don’t go after others usually. But since people can be outright what they dislike in a song, I think some users do take it personally that their fave isn’t liked. And they shouldn’t, none of this is personal! We’re not on anyone’s payroll to defend them. But I get it, this music can mean a lot to us and if someone doesn’t like it, we can get sensitive. I was joking with Billlie’s debut but I was like aww, I’m enjoying this song but people don’t like it. But even for myself I think practicing regularly not take it personally could improve ones experience here. Also push forward, like if you see a disliked artist here (I’m exempting really shitty people here or do messed up stuff frequently) like Blackpink for example, just comment what you enjoy and don’t focus on the negative. It can help break down a negative bias. Likewise, if you really hate/dislike a group, stop frequenting their posts. I do not want this place to become censored like a lot of other kpop spaces to only be nice but how many times do you need to share the same negative comment. That’s all, at least space them out lol.

4. Maybe with the negativity in MV posts, I think following a staple on Reddit could be cool: 2 weeks later: Thoughts on -insert release here- That way people who maybe disliked a song at first will share their more favorable opinions on it if it grew on them. Or vice versa, songs I liked a lot but find I don’t really play them.

Pt. 2 (they told me it was too long lol)

5. Just a general reminder would be taste is subjective. To go with the sensitivity thing, if someone dislikes something you like and vice versa, they’re not wrong. It’s ok to have a different opinion. I sometimes see that implied and that will be eyeroll worthy to me since that is not how music works.

6. Last one is just to foster most positivity, more discussion posts in general could help. We usually have some but we get busy with life so sometimes they fall behind plus seeing if it gets approved. Users have shared just sharing youtube videos, especially with lack of summaries, really not engaging. So that’s why they don’t comment in a lot of these posts. So creating different types of content could foster more neutral or positive stances.

So, I had totally forgotten the new JoJo's Bizarre Adventure season was supposed to come out on December 1st and I freaked out hard when the opening dropped on monday. I've already gone through all the 12 episodes that released and... that was such a wrong decision. It ended when it was getting really interesting and who knows when we'll get the next batch of episodes, probably around February T.T Anyways it was weird but also great, the first 3-4 episode are confusing and feel rushed but once the story settles it was great. I'm liking the new characters so far, and Jolyne is great. And what is Weather Report so hot for??? And as always I love the new opening and I love that we are back to CG ones and how much this one callbacks to Jotaro's ones:

Also, I loved last week's Wheel of Time episode. I don't know if I wasn't paying attention but I didn't expect that one person to be the dragon at all. I cannot wait to watch this week's one.

I was thinking of putting up a post doing an Omona Fashion Awards 2021 type of thing where people can nominate in a bunch of categories like fave stage outfit, best dressed group, best airport fashion, etc. But I'm not sure if there's enough interest/engagement for it to work?

I was going to leave nominations open for 2 weeks maybe and then move on to the voting post but idk.
