Izone’s impact will be felt in these overly stuffed music videos with way too much imagery meant for nothing but aesthetic that transitions every fucking five seconds for no reason.
There were some really cool dance shots that I wish the video absolutely would have dug into more: the first pre-chorus part by Wonyoung, the entire second verse but specifically the part on the floor, and Blonde girl’s second prechorus.
We will see the performances eventually, but I wish these companies would invest more in the cinematography of these videos beyond over stuffed visual feats with nothing but pretty images and cgi that do NOTHING. Aka izone’s videos.
As for the song:
I wish the chorus was just a tad bit more dramatic, but I loved a unified group sung chorus (although each had a lead). The slow stop in the pre-chorus was great but I don’t think it gave the song anything. The song is a little slow and doesn’t really kick into any sort of gear. But I don’t hate it. There will eventually have to be a discussion of how k pop likes to toss certain cultural motifs around like it’s some cilantro.
As for the group:
Still very early and with them having two popular Izone alum, you can see where this is going early. That being said Blonde girl seems to be vocal line as she was prominent in the video/song and even started the song. Like I thought they would go with Wonyoung for obvious reasons.
I think this song is fine, the musical direction is interesting. There's nothing particularly bad about it (like disjointed song, stupid beat drop, heavy autotune or cringey English). It just doesn't really grab me. It is kind of one note? It stays flat and never builds up to something bigger. The chorus after the bridge should have been more impactful but it was pretty much the same chorus with a high note that didn't stand out. Yujin's voice is nice. I want to see a dance version with the full choreo. Also, glad wonyoung isn't made to use her baby voice. I think they're on their way to become a solid group of this current generation. But I prefer the b-side song, tbh. I find it more memorable although more classic/generic.
girls look pretty. i wish we got more dance scenes tho bc the choreo looks interesting. i'm gonna check out their performances anyway.
i don't hate the song–i actually like the slowed down part in the pre-chorus–but i feel like something is missing from it. also i wonder if this was a loona leftover considering whose name is on the credits.
I don't dislike it, but it really doesn't have an oomph factor. especially for a debut, it might seem forgettable. Liz's tone sounds pleasant, I guess she'll be handling main vocal roles with Yujin. I'm pleasantly surprised with Wonyoung's vocals, like the baby voice in iz*one is gone thank goodness. I felt like I didn't see much of Gaeul, but she is pretty in the video. Leeseo really looks like a teenager it's giving me whiplash from their not bright concept.
also I'm gonna need them to stop the biting of finger when they feel like eleven
Underwhelming. It really does sound like a Loona reject. The chorus has potential but that slow down before it feels out of place and unnecessary.
All in all I feel like the only person selling this concept and sound to me is Yujin. I really think they would suit a high-teen with a dash of girl crush image or a PRISTIN (RIP) style concept. It would also be more age appropriate and suit more or the girls’ personalities. I thought they were going in that direction with their Have What We Want teaser but I guess girl grush reigns supreme at the moment.
I thought it was very chic and interesting. The comments about it being a potential loona leftover do make me curious tho as I do love loona (who, oof are not going to be beating those broke allegations I fear!) so maybe that's bad factor too IDK
But overally I feel pleased and think all the members were well integrated.
The song is a pretty good debut! I’ll admit it’s not an earworm currently but it does have elements I do enjoy. The line distribution is great, they did a good job making sure each girl shines. Yujin I had difficulty figuring out who she was in iz*one but here she really stands out. I think she’s going to thrive as a leader.
The MV is visually pleasing, it is all glamour shots that I’m never keen on but at least unlike iz*one, there isn’t nauseating jump edits every other second. You can actually see the scene for multiple seconds before transitioning to the next (though it helps this group is much smaller).
My biggest critique is the 14 year old member. She’s dressed and styled exactly like everyone else which is rubbing me the wrong way a bit. Also the part with them wearing all white on the floor with the gloves, my first thought was idk if I had a 14 year old daughter doing something like this (Tbh I wouldn’t lol) would I like that and the answer is no tbh…the group is mostly 17 year olds which this still feels too grown for them too but it’s also just part of kpop I’m desensitized to unfortunately. But that 14 year old is very much middle school age…it’s why I hate that having young teens in groups is so common now.
It’s definitely one of the better debuts of the rough gg debuts this year. Good for them already selling 50k+ their first day, this shows they’re on their way to being main competition for gen 4. Now I’m super curious what Bighit/HYBE’s gg will do 1st day sales since they have Sakura and they’re a huge company.
It's that lack of imagination again. Like they do not understand how wide and varied the world of girls and women can be. It's like the stylists/directors have never spoken to a teenage girl! "What do they do??? Fall in love, I guess???" UGH
i knew wonyoung was a minor but apparently most of them are and their youngest is only 14? imo this wasn't age appropriate at all, even if it's not the worst case of sexualising minors out there. i'm tireddddd :(
I agree. It’s not overtly sexual thank god! But this concept would’ve been more appropriate for a group all out of high school. It all feels very grown for them, and worse being there is a 14 year old.
I really wish they had stuck to the concept they had for the member teasers, like that whimsical "this is me!" vibe was so much more fun and seemed right for teenagers.
i feel like this is what izone would have sounded like if they continued with their secret song of the swan route? kind of sassy but still very izone-ish. the slowed-down prechorus is interesting, almost an anti-drop? wonyoung's vocals have improved significantly from her izone days, at least. only yujin (and liz, somewhat) is actually selling the concept, and some of the choreo comes off WAY too mature for the group considering the eldest is a 2003 liner and everyone else is quite a bit younger. :')))
for a debut i usually come in expecting something more bombastic, but i think this is nice with its more laid back sound. the beat is probably the most engaging part to me, while the slower prechorus moment stands out entirely because of how uncommon something like that is in kpop. the chorus kind of slipped past me, i didn't expect the mv teaser to be most of the chorus so i was expecting some sort of drop after the instrumentation let up a bit in the "counting" killing part. i don't see myself repeating this much but it's nice, and i appreciate the vibe it goes for in blending conventional elegant girl crush styling with a rum pum pum pum-esque sounds.
mv is nothing too impressive but it's fine. i'm not sure how well it matches the song itself but that might be because i went in expecting a much different energy than what the song actually delivers on. the members look stunning but a lot of the styling didn't feel age appropriate for an all teenager group i feel, especially considering they have a 14 year old in their ranks and performing in those white suits with the blue gloves felt vaguely uncomfortable to me (as nice as the outfits themselves are i think it's much more suited for mature concepts where the members are actually old enough to pull it off. i think twice would kill in outfits like that actually but it doesn't work here). but of course the sexualization of teenagers in the idol industry is nothing new so i'm not expecting much else when it comes to a young group honestly.
despite my lukewarm feelings on the song i can see myself easily stanning the group. the members themselves have visuals on lock, especially liz and rei who continually stood out to me in the mv, and i think liz might be my bias if i get into the group more, and they all seem very loveable already even though i know next to nothing about the girls themselves lol. maybe i'll make an effort this time with checking out the group instead of waiting for a comeback to impress me
idc i love it and i like how chic they all look and sound on the track. i'm tired of all the played out school girl/ baby girl/ girl crush aesthetic we've been getting lately anyway, so it's nice to see some level of maturity to a girl group.
i think there are way too many scenes but overall it's a pretty interestingly shot MV, like it has the usual kpop bells and whistles but there are some parts that are frankly beautiful because the director chose unique angles to shoot from. all in all this is a STRONG debut. these girls really came out the gate swinging and whatever they can't sell via MV, they can sell via live performance.
LOVE THE STYLING btw. the white suits with the royal blue gloves *chefs kiss*
ALSO:
this far into the kpop game, criticizing idols for looking and sounding the same is tired af IMO. the golden era is OVER, NONE of these groups are unique. once upon a time GG, 2NE1, kara, and wonder girls could stand on stage and we'd be looking at 4 diff girl groups with 4 different sounds, aesthetics, and artistic direction but that era is DEAD AND GONE.
and bc the current fandom eats kpop like they're paid by the view and have managed to silence out any form of valid criticism of the genre, we're stuck with these cookie cutter concepts until someone is willing to bend or completely break out of the form.
so idc i got my eye on these girls. as long as starship commits to giving them top-tier concepts, they'll have a good run.
--EDIT-- AND I JUST FOUND OUT THEY'RE ALL UNDER AGED LIKE WHY CANT KPOP GIVE ME AN AGE APPROPRIATE GIRL GROUP I JUST DONT GET IT
i enjoy the song, the blonde member has a really pretty voice. but i agree with what others have said, a lot of this (especially the outfits) wasnt age appropriate. i know that young debuts have always been a thing, but i hate when people say stuff like "it's because you are getting older while the debuts stay the same age" because im a year younger than zelo and vividly remembered being super uncomfortable when he debuted, but thats just me.
Yeah the argument of "you're an adult now, that's why it's uncomfortable" misses a lot of points.
Like, in a perfect world where pedophiles don't exist, you still shouldn't debut a 14-year-old, because you shouldn't be keeping a 14-year-old up all night without sleeping and controlling their diet. I am an adult now, but I still very clearly remember being 14, like it wasn't THAT long ago. I also wore short skirts and tiny shorts, but an adult stylist wasn't the one telling me to do it! Also my only responsibilities were school and playing with my friends. I didn't have to worry about album sales or widespread Internet harassment.
The whole environment isn't healthy for a child, that's what we're saying.
I had to search with the Korean name (I use Apple Music) bc Ive wasn‘t taken (alone and with the title), filtering through artist / song title didn‘t help, too.
honestly if it wasn't for the 'why is my heart colorful' bit this song would've been pretty damn good. i can see how people have been comparing it to rum pum pum pum. the 1234567/eleven bit is a really good hook, i only wish they'd beefed out the instrumental for that part a bit.
the girls are all so young and even the older ones _look_ much younger so the scenes of them being ~sensual make me uncomfortable. wonyoung is 17 why is she on her knees crawling backwards through a tight space. the youngest is 14 why is she doing any of those scenes.
I wish it had played with the tempo slightly differently! The idea behind that moment is great, they just didn't develop it. They needed a few beats after it to bridge back into the old tempo for the chorus, for me. It could have then been an epic moment in the last pre-chorus if they chose to slow it down even more drastically and then had a bigger few beats after to bring it back to the final chorus. I loved the energy and idea of it, just not the execution!
I'm not sure about this.. I felt like the slowed down part happened too many times? I will check out their live stage though . I think their choreo miiiiight sell it?
I liked it!!! It wasn't only a Wonyoung (I didn't know she could sound like this? Who was doing Izone's vocal direction wtf) and Yujin show though they obviously have the experience and charisma. The member with blond hair did well too, and not just because her hair colour made her more noticable lol. They're singing, it's a fully realized chorus, and the slowing down prechorus is just weird enough to give an edge without being too much. I like the guitar riff they're using. It's not the best song ever but a nice debut. Concept wise it's thankfully not too sexualized... I hope they don't lean in this direction in the future, at least while they're still so young. The MV was pretty but idk. I wish we had more choreo shots, the choreo looks cool.
opening with the ladies in those white suits was such an amazing choice! I wish we got to see them more. Oh good the suits do appear more n the MV.
0:43 - MV editing mistake. I hate seeing groups standing there waiting for the music to start.
I HATE the move at 1:11.
This feels like such a Gen Z song/MV.
That one main girl getting the bright pinnk dress is so obvously pushing her. I know it's because she is the well known one but still. Don't be so obvious.
