Six divorced men who have been refusing to pay child support expenses to the custodial parent were issued a 100-day driver's license suspension, according to the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family.

The ministry said that it has requested the law enforcement authorities to issue the order to the individuals, Thursday. The suspension will be retracted upon payment of unpaid child support expenses.

This is the first imposition of such an order for delinquency in child support payments after the relevant laws were revised in July.

Under the revised law, those who have failed to pay child support following a court order may face up to a one-year prison term, a fine of up to 10 million won ($8,550), an international travel ban or a driver's license suspension.

The government may also disclose their personal information, including their name, age and occupation on the ministry's website if they continue withholding payment.

According to the ministry, the six men have failed to pay 15.1 million won, 34.4 million won, 50.4 million won, 65.2 million won, 69.6 million won and 120 million won, respectively.

Of them, one man, who was identified only by his surname of Kim, paid 36 million won out of the total 65.2 million won he owed, after he was notified that his driver's license would soon be suspended.

"This case shows that the newly-introduced penalty against people who refuse to pay child support is having actual effects. We will continue to strengthen monitoring and revise the relevant measures to improve the environment for single parents to raise children," said an official at the gender equality ministry.

Earlier this month, they started imposing the travel bans too.

Wow, the nerve

It's good this is working, but its shameful that these men just don't pay child support or take care of their children

It's amazing the things people can justify as not their responsibility....

I hope the men hit with these bans are legit assholes and not men struggling with poverty, but other than that GOOD FOR THEM!

I don't really see how it matters tbh, either way they have a duty to their ex spouse and child(ren) to help provide for their kids that they helped produce and usually they don't even have custody so that's literal bare minimum. If they didn't want to go through this then they should've worn a fucking condom! Idky Korean men are so condom adverse, like 1 min of pleasure vs a life time of child support?? I wonder which is worse

SK is similar to the US in that child support payments reflect the income of the non-custodial parent so these men were either delinquent for a very long time or their income is average/high. Def not poverty (honestly, the mothers in these cases are prob struggling the most ☹️ )

My initial comment was not worded quite as well as I should have. What I meant to say is that articles like these seem to steer the narrative into a 'failing to pay = unwilling to pay = all fathers are deadbeats' territory, which I strongly disagree with. There is no context given in this article to why these men did not pay, research for Western countries would suggest that a multitude or reasons are possible, not all of them ill will. That said, again, I think its a good thing that SK is keeping non-custodial parents accountable though!

I got you! The "refusing" part is what made me think they probably were able to pay.

Considering the one individual they highlighted was able to pay up half of the amount upon hearing his license would be suspended, I would think it's REFUSING to pay vs not being able to:

"Of them, one man, who was identified only by his surname of Kim, paid 36 million won out of the total 65.2 million won he owed, after he was notified that his driver's license would soon be suspended."

That's a lot of money to suddenly be able to come up with when a punishment starts being introduced.

absolutely screaming @ the one man who immediately coughed up half what he owed. I mean I'm not surprised in the slightest but that's so funny to me

Good. I’m tired of men abandoning their children.

"refusing to pay child support expenses"

"According to the ministry, the six men have failed to pay 15.1 million won, 34.4 million won, 50.4 million won, 65.2 million won, 69.6 million won and 120 million won, respectively."

That is between $12,800 and $101,800.
