STAYC's founder explains the girls' ‘curtain hairstyle’, J says 'we want normal hair'.
The girl group has been sporting cheek-length bangs, neon dip-dyes and clashing outfits.

More than 100 groups debut every year in the K-pop industry. Unfortunately, only a few make it. Their strategies range from expensive promotions and involving notable artists to weird concepts and strange looks. The latter has also been incorporated by groups from huge agencies like SM’s NCT and SHINee. Once the act makes a name for themselves, they get more and more freedom to do what they want without worrying about their success. And this is what is going on with the current rookie groups like STAYC.
Quite a few rookie groups that debuted in the last year have become popular with an equal level of fame. We have girl groups like aespa, STAYC, Weeekly, and Purple Kiss causing quite a stir every time they make a comeback. With the rising popularity of K-pop all around the globe, it is becoming increasingly difficult to stand out as the bare minimum of fame is now easily achieved. And as STAYC’s founder and CEO explained, the groups can’t bank on just their talent anymore. This is evident from STAYC’s debut which was less than memorable according to netizens.
While their title track ‘So Bad’ is a fun song with the girls looking beautiful in the music video, the CEO feels that it didn’t make much of an impact. All of STAYC had dark flowing locks and wore pretty glittering outfits. But from their next comeback onwards, we had funky outfits, cheek-length princess bangs, and neon dip-dyed edges. Their label High Up Entertainment has also been going all out for their music video and promotional content to make it more eye-catching and quirky. While their current popularity is definitely on a larger scale than their debut era, the CEO doesn’t want to take any risks.
High Up’s CEOs happen to be none other than producers and musical duo Black Eyed Pilseung. They have been in the industry since 2014, worked with the likes of Sistar, GOT7, and TWICE and hence know the inner workings. During an interview, Black Eyed Pilseung’s Rado explained that he knew fans and Knetizens hated the current hairstyles and missed the gorgeous concept of ‘So Bad’. Even STAYC spoke up about it at the interview. Calling it the ‘curtain hairstyle’, J said that she wanted them to have normal hair.
Rado then decided to give the reason behind their decisions, “Our girls are a team from a small agency. They needed to stand out in this competitive industry somehow. Even if that is by having weird or experimental hairstyles. Sure, the fans can complain and criticize the company. But we are trying to do what we need to do in order for our girls to be noticed.” And while he understands the girls’ and fans’ concerns, he says that he will not be stopping this strategy anytime soon.

StayC’s music producer: ‘Although ASAP hit the jackpot, the group hasn’t broken even yet… they will be paid next year’
Music producer Rado mentioned the earnings of his agency’s group StayC.
The October 15th broadcast of the web entertainment show ‘Gura Cheol’ featured Rado – Highup Entertainment’s CEO. On this day, MC Kim Gu-ra asked, “How much does it cost to produce a girl group album?”.
Rado surprised everyone by saying, “1.5~2 billion won. It costs 100 million won more just for a music video. It’s 400~500 million won for big companies.” In response, Kim Gu-ra wondered what the company expected in return for the investment when producing a new girl group. Rado answered frankly, “We need to earn 2~3 billion won more.”
When Kim Gu-ra asked if StayC turned into a surplus or a decifit compared to investment, Rado tapped the calculator and confessed, “It’s been three years since we established this company. The agency’s maintenance costs are enormous. When it comes to StayC, I think they’ll turn into a surplus.”
Later, Rado added that StayC has not yet made enough profit, but it is close to breaking even. Kim Gu-ra said, “Sooner or later, StayC will be paid.” Hearing this, Rado shared, “They could get paid by the middle or end of next year.”
Meanwhile, the six-member girl group StayC, which debuted in November 2020, has become popular by surpassing 10,000 copies in the first week of their debut album Star To A Young Culture’s release and ranking first among girl groups that debuted last year.

I love the hairstyles, they are so unique and fun! The members are so cute, they can definitely pull it off imo and it clearly works because everybody was talking about their stereotype hairstyles. I hope next year will be a good year for them, too, so they can get paid ~asap~

Date: 2021-10-16 01:38 pm (UTC)I hope the girls get payed as fast as possible and continue triving! I don't follow them but it's impossible to deny they have talent
(also, as for kpop getting bigger, I went to a Stradivarius on two different occasions and Sumni "Tail" was blasting and I know that the songs are chosen by the main offices, not the store staff, so it's kinda fun..and weird xD)

Date: 2021-10-16 07:15 pm (UTC)they got some sponsorships, too (bags, for example). they promote a LOT and it clearly pays off. their management is really workng hard and it shows. when they promote they are everywhere. not only that, the girls are very pretty and cute, they sing really well live (it's their pride after all) and they have good personalities and get along well, too. they get invited a lot because they are building a good name for themselves.
not sure how familiar you are with girl group sales, so here are so rough numbers to compare how well they are doing;
purple kiss' hide & seek ~40k
red velvet queendom ~245k
jennie solo ~60k
oh my girl dear om my girl ~87k
wjsn unnaturel ~92k
aespa savage ~300k (this number will likely go up a lot still beause they only just started promotions + they are from a large company)
hope this helps a little bit?
it's incredibly fast, especially considering their agency has already invested more in them since their debut, they already got a new (large) dorm, new microphones (stayc requested them so their fans can hear them better because singing is their pride), they get to eat well (like expensive but healthy meals such as acai bowls and stuff).
of course, i don't know what's happening BTS but it seems their agency really cares about them

Date: 2021-10-16 05:02 pm (UTC)Also I love StayC's styling a ton- they look SO cute even with the clashing patterns and the weird hair choices, and that's really impressive and eye-catching to me (and yes, reminds me of Krystal managing to make every f(x) look work)

Date: 2021-10-16 06:06 pm (UTC)Pay them NOW. Producing a group is an investment, the members shouldn't suffer from bad management decisions. If you can't afford to produce a group don't do it. It's commonly known in the west that if you want to sign up with an model agency that wants you to pay for photoshoots and setcards, it's a scam.

Date: 2021-10-16 06:09 pm (UTC)also companies should start paying groups from the off but you know, that would need an industry-wide culture change.

Date: 2021-10-17 08:30 am (UTC)however, the girls should be paid now. in any other organization it would be considered bizarre that your employees would only get paid as soon as the company breaks even — it's the responsibility of management that you've got enough money to not only pay for your expensive music videos and styling, but also for your employees actual work.

Date: 2021-10-17 04:52 pm (UTC)Pleasantly surprised the girls are doing so well to get paid soon, I guess the CFs and that documentary helped bring in more money besides their sales. While I’m still a bit iffy at companies imposing trainee debt, I hope the girls have been given some allowance/stipend to tide through (or something like phd students have)
