In connection with this post.

Rep. Jang Je-won has revealed his family is in shambles after his son Noel's many scandals.

On the 28th, Rep. Jang posted on his Facebook and revealed he had resigned from his post as general manager of President Yoon's camp and stated, "My wife spends her days in tears and my mother can't even eat properly. The family is a mess."

"I've spent many sleepless nights wondering what to do but decided to push ahead even after President Yoon rejected my intention to resign. However I thought it would be more helpful if I resigned my post and will share my support quietly. I'll take some time and deeply self reflect on my sins as a father who raised his child wrong. Once again, I bow my head and apologize."

Noel's agency Glitched Company also released a statement on the 28th and stated they have terminated contract with Noel. Glitched is a one-man label founded in April by Noel and is responsible for his comeback activities.

Meanwhile, Noel is currently under investigation for causing an accident in Banpo-dong while driving drunk with an expired license and assaulting police officer during arrest.

A petition posted on Blue House site is asking for Rep. Jang Je-won to be stripped of his parliamentary position and as of the 29th, signatures had exceeded 180,000. The Blue House gives an official response once a petition reaches 200,000 signatures.

honestly its a little over the top for the father to be stripped of his position because his son is a piece of shit. like yea they may not have raised him well but its not like the father himself assaulted the cop.

Agreed. I'm assuming this is a thing in Korean culture though: the collective is much more important than the individual, and the actions of children are taken to mean something about the parents and the way they were brought up. Unless the parents did anything so shield their son from receiving punishment for his crime, they shouldn't take the fall for his messiness.

oh yea 100%. the deep-seated confucian concept of shame is alive and well. i get his apology etc., but the petition is super excessive. i wonder what the age range is of the signees, possibly skews older

I'm pretty sure I've seen K-drama's with these exact plots, that makes me laugh a little each time I hear about this case.

Yeah, most likely you enabled and spoiled, or neglected, him as parents so not feeling too much for your poor suffering now.

This assumption comes from the fact that he hasn't been punished for all his previous bad actions.

Yup that's why I think he needs to step down or remove him from political position. He used his money and influences to keep his son out of jail all this time.

Yea I feel like he has probably covered it up, I find it hard to believe that the son could have gotten scot free over the years without any intervention

Honestly, I feel like politics all over the world has this thing where a politician gets blamed for the conduct of their family- like, I'm from the US and I can completely see a politician's kid here getting into trouble and then the people who already disliked that politician calling for them to be removed on those grounds. So I hesitate to characterize this as a "Korean" thing and more as a "typical politics" thing- but I dunno since I'm only speaking from my perspective; can any of you all see something like this happening in your country?

Personally, I don't think it's any good precedent to have someone held socially responsible for crimes committed by their kid. Like, no matter how you raise your kids, stuff can happen in that kid's life that's out of your control, and the kid can be a very different adult than you raised them to be. Unless there's clear signs that the parent didn't treat their kid right (I'm thinking of abusive stage parents here in particular), I find it hard to point to the parents.

BUT all that said, in this particular case there does seem to be some suspicion that this politician used his power to keep his son out of jail, and that's a pretty blatant case of corruption there, so I am curious if that's the angle that the "stripping him of power" petition is coming from. (Also, if this politician was very popular, would he be stepping down even after this? I don't know enough about Korean politics to make any kind of call on this, but I am curious!)

Personally, I don't think the father should resign for actions of another person who is connected to him socially or by blood.
His job is a public job and he either resigns due to personal shame or lack of public confidence as someone that cannot do his job well because he can't raise his son well. (the petition seems to say the public doesn't want him).

I remember seeing a teacher's argument on why a political candidate in my area shouldn't be running because her daughter was a teen mom.
Managing government policies/tasks and raising a child may share some similarities but there are a lot of differences.
.
Hopefully him stepping down might mean he has more time to be with his family/son and can plan what their next steps are, either going to rehab or shipping him overseas as a new start....etc.

Unless he tried to cover up his son's crimes (or previously disparaged someone because of something similar) he shouldn't have to lose his job because of what his son did.

Imagine if you lost your job because you had a shitty relative?
