Hey party people, it’s Friday! I’m happy because even though my birthday isn’t until next week, I already have 3 cakes in the fridge. One of the cakes I just found on my doorstep with no note. It’s a 4 layer red velvet and I’m keeping it. Every week I go through the charts for this day in the past and post the top three songs. Then I pick out two more from the top ten as honorable mentions. This week, we are going back to the 2nd week in September, 2009. And since I’m in a good mood (because cake), it’s ladies night! Queens and more queens delivering bops and more bops!

#3 Baek Ji Young featuring Taecyeon “My Ear’s Candy”
This was the lead single from her EP “EGO”. A departure from her usual ballads, this was a banger. Baek Ji Young reportedly chose 2PM’s Taceyon to feature after hearing “10 Out Of 10”. The two of them would perform this song at her manager’s wedding with costumes and choreo, which is both fun and funny. Like, explain that to grandma lol. The song would only win one trophy at the year end award shows, but honestly 2009 gave us too many good songs!

#2 Kara “Wanna”
It was the lead single from the group’s “Revolution” album. It featured a more mature image than their previous releases. At first the girls promoted this song along with “Mister”, as a supporting song, but then that butt dance got super popular. So they stopped promoting “Wanna” and leaned into “Mister” instead. And you know the rest...that butt dance was EVERYWHERE lol. But this song did well too, with at least 2 million downloads. I also really loved this song back then, that chorus is so catchy. They look so pretty too.

#1 Brown Eyed Girls “Abracadabra”
Get ready to thrown those hips! I haven’t gone a year without posting “Abracadabra”, and won’t stop now! The second single from the group’s “Sound-G” album, it’s THAT song. Forever THAT Brown Eyed Girls song. The song is one of the biggest selling songs of the year, and would give the girls multiple music show trophies and wins at the year end awards shows. Gain doing The Arrogant Dance would make revival in 2013, with PSY’s “Gentleman”. Here’s a live stage from a 2015 appearance on Sketchbook, looking all fine and stuff.

Honorable Mentions

#9 Bada “Mad”

This was the lead single from her 4th solo album, “See The Sea” (it’s cute because “bada” means “sea” lol). Another song on the album features 2PM’s Taecyeon, who apparently was booked and busy in the summer of ’09. I always forgot about this song until I see her, and then it’s all I think about lol. Up until pretty recently, she was keeping a low profile for a while after the birth of her child last fall. Same with Gummy, too. I don’t think they shared pictures or the names of their daughters. Happy that they’ve been able to keep their private life private.

#10 2NE1 “I Don’t Care”

This was the last of the group’s three debut singles from their debut EP “2NE1”. It’s still my favorite song from them. It was a huge success, with multiple music show wins, including their first triple crown. They would win a bunch of award show trophies as well, including SOTY at MAMA, making them the first ever group to win that award in their debut year. Here’s a stage from Inkigayo. They look so little! Dara looks pretty much the same ofc Vampire Dara lol.

Abracadabra is iconic and the album is great too.

2NE1's first mini showcases how good Teddy can be, the fact that they were competing with SNSD in their debut album says a lot.

ah, 2009 was such a good year for kpop. It was also the first year I sort of started to follow groups and listen to each release when it came out after only get quite casually into kpop in 2008. Fun times!

I still listen to pretty much every song on this list today. These were some good, iconic bops.
