Slow, steady entertaining first 2 episodes. I like it 😊 the folks in the village reminds me a bit of our Camellia Blooms ensemble.

Is this worth watching?? Does anyone have any recent kdrama reccs? Idk what I'm in the mood for bc I always get bored of just romance kdramas but I want something kinda light.

I've recently finished Mine and The Devil Judge - loved both
Currently watching 'Nobody Knows' but slow going
Tried to watch Nevertheless but the lead male is blah and creeps me out.

Less recently:
Got bored of When my love blooms - yes couldn't get through it despite jinyoung and park boyoung lol
Itaewon Class - pretty good but why do all kdramas drag around ep 8????
Crash landing on you - took me a while but I did enjoy it!
Memories of alhambra - overall liked it
Abyss - god this dragged
He is Psychometric - lee ahn my love ;~;

What feels like forever ago:
He is Beautiful - first kdrama I ever watched in 2009 lol

Can't think of anymore that I've watched.

Overall it takes me a while to get through kdramas bc I find they suddenly drag around ep 8 so if you know of any that don't really do this, that'd be great! In general I tend to watch way more jdramas tho :x

babyjenkski always watches good dramas!

for me, taxi driver was the best drama i've watched this year — it's quite violent but dealt with korean social issues so well. loved law school too and really liked vincenzo, but had some problems with the last one.

some other non-romance dramas that i loved: sky castle (about parental pressure/korean education system/ high-low class), signal (detective), secret forest (legal/detective), misaeng (office life), age of youth (female friendship, some romance on the side but not central)

romance dramas that i really enjoyed because they were light but they had good twists to the genre/dealt with social commentary than most were: because this is my first life, extra-ordinary you, my id is gangnam beauty, twenty again, when the camellia blooms

Oh yes! I forgot Sky Castle, wanted to watch it for Kim Seo Hyung lol

I watched some of the Japanese ver of Signal, do you think I could still watch the Korean ver??

I read my id is gangnam beauty when it was being released but I was kinda let down by the casting, felt like they didn't cast properly for the male lead but I'll try it :D

Thank you so much for the reccs and the genres, super helpful! :D

let me know if you liked any of them :) my personal romcom fave is extra-ordinary you, i'm somewhat of an evangelist lol i was a bit skeptical of the storyline at first but i thought the female lead was great, so strong and determined to change her fate.

i loved sky castle! i even put it on a course syllabus!

i haven't watched the japanese version so i don't know unfortunately :( sorry!

cha eunwoo is quite stiff in the role but i still appreciated the drama a lot! i think it was one of his first leading roles? i also quite liked rookie historian goo haeryeong (historical) with shin sekyung and he's the male lead there too, with better acting

I definitely will! Altho it'll take me a while to get throguh them so I'll have to bookmark this post.

I think I might start w/ sky castle since i always hear about that

Wait that was cha eunwoo? lol I completely forgot it was him haha

Thank you again~~

if you haven't seen them, beyond evil and D.P were amazing kdramas that were fairly recent! i also have to agree with the other commenter, law school was great! i don't know if you watch many melo type dramas but youth of may was also beautiful! vincenzo was also a lot of fun!

likewise haha, do you have any jdrama recommendations that i might have skipped on??

thank you!!

ooh what kind of jdramas do you like??? I watch a bunch every year altho i feel like this year has been rather slow?? i used to keep a list but haven't updated it in years ;~;

I'm currently watching Night Doctor which I'm really enjoying! Tengoku to Jigoku has been my absolute favourite for this year though. Shichinin no Hisho was maybe my fave of 2020.

Quite a few of my absolute favourites have quite a few seasons like Kinkyu Torishirabeshitsu, Team Batista, SPEC, SP, BG etc.

God I have so many I can't think. Regarding films, my absolute fave series is Library Wars/ Toshokan Sensou - I've read the novels and watched all the adaptations and the films do a really good job, I literally watch it every year - due to watch it soon this year :p

I do watch romance but my faves tend to be like workplace based??? Kore wa Keihi de Ochimasen! is a cute funny one.

I try to watch any drama with an interesting sounding premise but honestly I mostly watch for my favourite actresses (and actors but there are way more actresses that I like lol)

haha i'm kind of an all-rounder when it comes to jdramas, so i watch a lot of different genres depending on mood! some of my all time faves are ones like n no tame ni, ikebukuro west gate park, dele, and dark mystery/thrillers as well! but then i also love dramas like kahogo no kahoko, hanadan, kanojo wa kirei datta, and so on! there's been so many gems i've come across over the years too~!!!

i'm also watching Night Doctor and enjoying it, Tengoku to Jigoku was fun! I didn't actually watch Shichinin no Hisho so I should defo give that a try, sounds like it'd be something I'd enjoy!

I don't watch many movies sadly, not enough time but I've liked a few I've seen that came out fairly recently! (My Blood and Bones in a Flowing Galaxy, the Kenshin movies etc)

oh, Kore wa Keihi de Ochimasen has Shigeoka Daiki in it too, maybe I should check out this one!! from the synopsis I wasn't sure originally but I guess it's always those ones that are surprising!!
I definitely watch mainly for my fave celebs tbh haha, but I do try to tend to give a try to some here and there. I'll look up some of the ones you mentioned though, thank you~! :)

Ooh if you like JW then Miss Pilot with Ryusei is good — lots of other big names too! Attention please is my all time fave pilot drama tho — really good cast. Not sure which Johnny's you like but Ryo is in it. Speaking of Ryo, a classic would be 1 litre of tears which was one of the first I ever watched! Along with the likes of HanaDan etc. I assume you've watched Gokusen based on your icon? 😛

Lol ngl when I first started watching dramas it was for my favourite Johnny's but then I quickly became a fan of lot of actresses and actors and other agencies like Amuse (haruma 😭). Actually Kamen Rider Den O made me a fan of Takeru lool.

I like a weird range from tokusatsu to random dramas that people don't seem to know. Like I'm still waiting for S2 of Clone Baby but have yet to find anyone else who has watched it 😭

Japan def does media and crime well. As well as making super obscure jobs seem fun lol. Jimi ni sugoi was really good! I love ishihara satomi lol.

ooh thanks for the suggestions! I haven't watched any pilot dramas so I'll give it a look! I'm a big fan of quite a few Johnny's haha, namely Kis-My-Ft2, Arashi, KATTUN, SixTONES, King & Prince, and I've enjoyed acting from members of HSJ before.
I reaaally wanted to watch 1 litre of tears but I don't do well with v sad dramas haha! It's such a shame as I heard about just how good it is!

oh I've not seen Gokusen actually! I chose this icon originally a long while back just because I'm a huge fan of both Haruma (RIP) :( and Takeru, and I couldn't bring myself to change it since.

lol I think it's good to have such a diverse taste! I've seen only one ep of Clone Baby, I'll have to continue it one day and see what I think, I know it's quite a strange drama :p

yeah I've discovered Japan is great when it comes to media, legal and crime dramas. They do seem to also do well with some romance and slice of life dramas! oh Jimi ni Sugoi was such a fun drama! I love both Satomi and Suda so it was an easy watch :D It made proofreading seem so fun haha.

This year, I've loved 'Beyond Evil', 'Law School', 'Vincenzo' and 'Taxi Driver' (Vincenzo being the 'lighest' of them all)

I've also enjoyed 'The Witch's Diner' which is a bit different from the dramas above (it's fantasy but it also deals with social issues) and is pretty short with just 8 episodes.

I'd also recommend D.P. but it's not 'light' at all ^^'

I'm not a fan of romance dramas but there's one I've watched and actually finished because I enjoyed it: 'Witch's Romance' with Uhm Jung Hwa and Park Seo Joon (https://mydramalist.com/9260-witchs-romance). It's 'old' (2014) but I had some good laughs so I want to recommend it.

Thank you so much!!

I mentioned light ones bc mine, tdj and nobody knows were/ are very emotional but I think that kind of genre for kdrama is my favourite whoops 🤭

Which do you recommend most out of the top 4? Ignoring which is the lightest? Quite a few people have recommended them so Idk which to start with it lol

My number 1 is definitely 'Beyond Evil', I absolutely loved every minute of it, it kept me on the edge of my seat and was always so frustrated at the end of an episode because I wanted more.
And Shin Ha Kyun is absolutely perfect in it (I didn't know him before that and now I'm in love lol).

oooh i was thinking of watching the witch's diner but i haven't been able to get into kdramas recently.. putting it on my list now (including beyond evil) because our tastes seem to overlap :)

I can only highly recommend Beyond Evil because it's just perfect.
As for The Witch's Diner, I wasn't expecting much but ended up liking it a lot.
I'm also currently watching Police University and it's also pretty nice, quite funny and doesn't take itself too seriously

Not really light lol but I finished Beyond Evil and it’s the best thing I’ve watched this year. Also recommend Secret Forest 1&2

For light dramas I recommend Into the Ring! Also Weightlifting Fairy is still the best light kdrama for me

I prefer jdramas too because they’re mostly 8 episodes and the plot dont unnecessarily drag. Just a shame that not a lot of jdramas that seem promising get to be subbed 😖

Date: 2021-09-01 07:16 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] nudrive.livejournal.com
Thank you I'll check them out :D

Is weighlifting fairy similar to bongsoon? AH I FORGOT TO ADD THAT TO MY LIST, I love bongsoon, shame there's that bully that has now ruined it for me but I love park boyoung and hyunsik :D

Isn't 11 the standard? Idk if it's true for kdramas but because jdramas are usually seasonal so if you split the year 52/4=13 each season has roughly 13 weeks except I guess they probably don't air during golden week and at the end of the year which gives you 11 weeks. Some are def shorter tho.

Yeah it's unfortunate, compared to when I first got into jdramas, there are way fewer subbers now. I contribute that to big hosting websites shutting down and people getting older and too busy with rl. Ofc there's also been a huge shift away from LJ (where I used to get all my subs) to twitter etc. It's a shame because medical dramas are my fave but I don't always understand the technical jargon ;~;

Also, so many dimples lol.

it's so cute and funny! i'm really enjoying it. i'm not someone who usually watches (or enjoys) the romance genre, but i liked Kim Seon-ho in Start Up and i've never seen Shin Min-a in anything, so i thought i'd give it a chance!

the village grandmas are so entertaining and cute, they might just be my favorite lol also Kim Seon-ho's smile?? worth the price of admission tbh

This sounds nice. I'll wait to hear if the ending is any good to actually watch. I hate that most kdramas have horrible endings.

I want something light and fluffy to distract from the hell hole that is the current state of the world.

This is a slice-of-life sort of drama, but somehow it has some characteristics of a hallmark rom-com; a career-focused woman from the city goes to a quaint small town meets a scruffy local man that is too busy to fall in love or something. Loving the pretty scenery. Slice-of-life dramas about escaping the city tend to be filled with these homey, chill and warm scenery.

And homey, chill and warm is sort of the vibe I am hoping for with this drama. It’s almost fall and I just want to sit back and relax over the weekend with a hot mug of tea and enjoy some tv time. I enjoyed these first two episodes. Let's see if this can finally get me out of the kdrama slump that Bossam left me in.

I don't usually watch this kind of dramas (I've started 'Was It Love?' for Song Ji Ho but haven't been able to go past the second episode ^^') but I'm quite intrigued by this one.

I think I'm going to give it a try if only for Kim Seon Ho and Shin Min Ah (will I be able to survive so much beauty is the question lol)

I always want to go back to Was It Love but there are so many other dramas I have to finish and I read some reviews that weren't great about the whole thing so it doesn't motivate me ^^'.
I ofter wish that kdramas weren't so long, I had less trouble finishing jdramas before :(

I haven't watched a drama since Run On so I'm hoping this will be the one that grabs me again. I'm hoping to watch this in the next few days. I absolutely love Kim Seon Ho and this seems like a chill lowkey drama.
Thanks for the discussion post, this will motivate me to keep up with it!

I watched this yesterday and all I kept thinking was how gorgeous Shin Min Ah is lmao her face is unreal.

I’ve been watching some heavy dramas lately (Strangers from Hell now; and Beyond Evil previously) so a light and fun drama like this is much needed

haha I don't really know if I'm big on pilot dramas, but I'll defo give it a look and see! I'm quite a big fan of a few Johnny's idols, namely Kis-My-Ft2, Arashi, SixTONES, King & Prince, KATTUN, and so on XD
I haven't seen Gokusen, I actually need to! This icon I chose more because I love both Takeru and Hiruma :') and I'd actually been using it before he passed, so I felt reluctant to change it lol.

I think nowadays I just watch if I like the sound of something, or if it's highly recommended! I do tend to be biased if some of my fave actors are in it though. I'm a huge fan of the actors from Amuse though, like you!!!

lol I have only seen one ep of Clone Baby, I need to try and finish it! It's a very bizarre drama I think?

oh Jimi ni Sugoi was really fun! I love Ishihara Satomi as well so I watch a lot of her dramas. I also love Suda Masaki so it was a perfect mix. But yeah, media, crime and legal seem to be where their strong points are. There are some good romance dramas as well though out there!

i watched the first 2 episodes back to back and i really liked it! it's exactly the light slice of life drama i needed apparently :) i feel like i'm already forgiving the show for the netflix romcom premise and the overdone kdrama trope of "they met as children so they're meant to be"

shin minah is soooo gorgeous! i didn't know kim seonho but he's surprisingly cute too. they're super charming as leads which makes me not care about some of the cliches mentioned above. the townspeople steal the show though, i cannot state how much i enjoy the fallen 80s? 90s? singer lol the actor plays him so well and his styling is spot on! love the two children too they're so adorable. definitely get camellia blooms vibes like you said op!

lmao i didn't watch start up but i can understand your bitterness around a love triangle lol!

yeah i totally understand! if it's done well or if the rest of the show is cute and well done i generally don't mind these kinds of tropes, but it just sometimes feels a bit lazy/unnecessary. they also could develop a meaningful relationship without a childhood meant to be plot

I hope this one stays good coz I really want a nice kdrama now.

same! i am in need of something light!
