Hyungwon x Wellage Cosmetics for Star1 Magazine

(T/N: I cut questions about the OOAK album/cb/producing etc that were basically rehashes from other interviews)

Seeing your photoshoot today, I get why they call you a “living manhwa character.” Can you share some tips about taking care of your skin or appearance?
I’m not just saying this because of the photoshoot, but I really do like Wellage’s products. I don’t really know how to take care of my skin so I just used lotion and left it at that. But after getting Wellage’s toning pads and cica cream as a gift, I used it pretty often and I was surprised at how much better my skin felt. I have very dry skin and eczema to boot but my skin became a lot more refined and moisturized since using those. My makeup artist even mentioned how much better my skin has gotten.

You’ve been starring on the INSSAOPPA series with Minhyuk, acting out a lot of different characters.
We’ve filmed three episodes so far and I’ve been discovering new sides of myself while playing all these new characters. I’ve known Minhyuk for so many years now that we click really well. Our vibe as real-life friends definitely comes out. Our fans have been wanting to see Minhyuk and Hyungwon doing something together for a long time and now we finally are so I hope they enjoy watching our chemistry.

Monsta X is most well-known for your performances so what would say is your most memorable performance?
That would be “Shoot Out.” We’d already done a lot of powerful choreography but that song really cemented our image as a performance group. I think that’s when the floodgates really opened for us. Shownu standing in the middle of the stage with his chest on vibration mode played a big part.

What kind of concept would you do for a solo? Have you thought about that at all?
I’ve never even thought about promoting anything solo. But there is a concept I’d really like to try someday. Monsta X mostly does pretty powerful music and choreography. If I were to do something on my own, I’d want to try something more calm. I think it’d be cool if I could release an album as a DJ someday. Not just a track here and there but a proper full album with a wide variety of genres.

You’re known as MX’s official ‘visual’ member. What do you think about that?
I’m not sure I agree. I don’t think of myself as particularly good-looking. And I don’t think our team really has a standout visual member. All six of us are distinctly attractive in our own unique ways. I don’t think we’re a group that has a clear ‘visual.’ But when the members read this, they’re absolutely going to start dragging me, saying I’m pretending to be humble and fishing for compliments (laughs). I hope they don’t take this the wrong way…

Isn’t it just unfair if you get ripped on top of having that manhwa character face? What inspired you to start working out?
I.M spent about three months constantly trying to entice me into working out with him. I say enticing but he was actually just nagging (laughs). I think he was worried I was just going to collapse one day if I kept living the way I was. But you know how people telling you to do something makes you not want to do it. No matter how much he nagged, it didn’t have any effect until one day I looked at myself in the mirror and was seriously shocked. My stomach was sticking out. I looked like a spider. Everything was still skinny as a rail but my stomach was bulging (laughs). I started working out the very next day. It’s been about eight months now. Every body adds muscle a little differently and my shoulder muscles apparently grow quickly. I’m pretty proud that my shoulders have gotten broader. My next target area is my back. I’m going to do my best to build it up and be back-handsome (laughs).

You’ve been cast in the web drama “Fly, Again” as the main character Han Yohan. Tell us a little bit about your role.
It’s a hakwon story about youth. Han Yohan is a character who was a classically trained dancer for years. He had dreams of becoming a world-famous dancer but failed to realize them and started pursuing the second option of becoming an idol. I feel very attached to the project because I can relate a lot to the character of Yohan. I love to dance and I have a lot in common with his personality. It’s easy to get immersed in the character because it reminds me a lot of when I was training to become an idol.

What is the atmosphere like on set?
It’s great and really comfortable. The sunbaes look after me a lot and tell me a lot about acting, they share a ton of tips and know-how with me. I feel like I still have a long way to go as an actor but everyone helps me out with so much care that it relieved a lot of the pressure on me. I feel like I can just follow the sunbaes’ example and I’m doing my best to learn a lot from them.

I noticed your fandom Monbebe is just as forceful as Monsta X. Their expressions of affection can be pretty wild, have you seen any especially memorable comments?
Monbebe comments are amazing. I can’t pick just one. They’re so much fun to read, hours will go by in a flash. But I actually prefer to read the letters people post to the fan cafe. A lot of them have really, uh, intimidating titles (laughs). Like, “Now I’m pissed,” “This is just messed up,” “What’s wrong with your face,” looking at the titles is pretty scary. I wonder if I did something wrong and then when I actually read them they’re full of love and affection. I think our fans are a lot tougher than we are (laughs). I guess we’re very aggressively loved? Haha, we’re very happy thanks to our ferocious fans.

It’s been nearly seven years since you debuted. By now, you must be able to tell what your members are thinking just by looking at each other.
We don’t even have to look (laughs). I take a lot of pride in our teamwork. Our members are all pretty different and I think that makes us work better together. Shownu, I.M and I are calmer, while Minhyuk, Kihyun and Jooheon are more energetic. I think it’s a good mix of personalities that works out well. And we’ve been together so long, we know each other better than anyone. We know exactly how one another feels, so we know how to respect each other all the more.

Where do you think you’ll be in another seven years?
Turns out seven years goes by a lot quicker than you’d think. When we were just debuting, I couldn’t imagine where we’d be at seven-year-old idols. I don’t have any grand ambitions. In seven years, I want to be able to see our fans the way we do now. I have to grow a lot and put in a lot of work to make that happen. Because if I hadn’t put in the work I have, I wouldn’t be here now.

Since you’re a master of acrostic poems, how about one to end the interview. Let’s go with the Monbebe that you love.
Mon: Monbebe brings love to mind
Be: BEBE was written that way
Be: BEBE2 is coming someday, so wait for it (laughs).

“What’s wrong with your face" is most definitely something I would say to his stupid pretty face lol. Look at him! Ugh I love him! With those dumb long ass legs.

That Pepsi behind the scenes video was 90% Shownu eating...I'm here for it, and I love it for him! Miss youuuuuuuuuu!!

I really don't know why I find your endless thirst for him so entertaining, but I love it. You and OP need to keep it up.

Maybe it's the 95% thirst post you do, the bookclub (shine 2 when?), or Friday throwbacks.... Which are so thirstless.

I was just fine with Shownu (and the rest of the group) until he broke that axe on KBop Star. Probably it was the way he so effortlessly broke it, or the way he seemed both so surprised and yet so matter of fact about it...I know I needed that strength and power between my legs. Like I know he could give it to me good. And then there would be snacks afterwards. Or even during. Like, a twenty pizza break or like, hold up let me get a orange or something. *le sigh* he just makes me horny and i wanna climb him like a tree. A tree with a solid chest and damn strong thighs who doesn't mind taking off his clothes at any given moment. Which is great and i appreciate that. Anywho. TLDR, he broke that axe, it broke the horny dam inside of me, got the juices gushing out, and now i love him lol.

I came into this post bc of OP's note on how they really have a visual "brand" or "signature" .... despite sound.
