While aiming to rank among the top 10 countries at the Tokyo Olympics in terms of medals, Korea will also be in pursuit of another "unknown" achievement: a 100th gold medal in the Summer Olympics.

Since freestyle wrestler Yang Jung-mo brought home Korea's first Summer Olympic gold medal at the Montreal Games in 1976, its athletes have won a total of 90 gold medals until the 2016 Rio Olympics. That ranks Korea 13th in the world in terms of total medals won in Olympic history. Along with 90 gold medals, Korea has claimed 87 silver and 90 bronze.

Twelve countries, excluding the now extinct Soviet Union and East Germany, have passed the "century mark" at the Summer Games, with the United States leading the pack with 1,022 gold medals.

Among Asian countries, China is the leader with 224 gold medals, which is also the third-highest in the countrywide medal tally, followed by Japan with 142 gold. Korea ranks third in Asia.

However, it remains to be seen if Team Korea will be able to join the pantheon in Tokyo.

According to global data giant Gracenote, Korea is predicted to win nine gold, 10 silver and six bronze medals, while the Korean Sport and Olympic Committee expects its athletes to bag seven gold, 11 silver and 14 bronze medals.

However, the Associated Press predict Korea to win 10 gold medals this time.

Korean archers and taekwondo practitioners are predicted to win four gold medals, respectively. In addition, AP expected the men's sabre team in fencing and world No. 2 golfer Ko Jin-young to occupy the top spot on the podium as well.

However, AP forecast that some Korean athletes favored to win gold will come up short. According to the news agency, shooter Jin Jong-oh, who won four gold medals in the Olympics, is forecast to end up with silver in the men's 10-meter air pistol, while judoka An Chang-rim is predicted to win bronze in the men's under-73 kilograms.

Jun Woong-tae, a four-time world champion and 2018 Asian Games gold medalist in the modern pentathlon, is not expected to bring a gold medal home, but will manage to win a bronze.

If Korea were to win its 10th gold medal at the Tokyo Games, it could come from women's golf, baseball or football. The gold medal events of those sports are scheduled to be held, Aug. 7, the penultimate day of the Olympics that will end, Aug. 8.

Korea's 50th gold medal from the Summer Olympics came from badminton duo Ha Tae-kwon and Kim Dong-moon in the men's doubles at the Athens Games in 2004.

Including the Winter Olympics, Korea has bagged 121 gold medals.
