Flashback Friday
2021-07-09 03:27 pmEvery week I check the charts for this day in the past and share the top three songs. Then I pick out two more from the top ten as honorable mentions. This week, we are going back 10 years, to the 2nd week of July, 2011.
#3 Secret “Starlight Moonlight”
This was the group’s follow up to “Shy Boy”, that was released earlier in the year. I wasn’t a fan of this era. Retro Secret wasn’t doing anything for me. But this was a really successful single, and would stay in the top ten for over a month. It is still their biggest selling song.
#2 f(x) “Hot Summer”
This was the single of the album of the same name, a repackaged version of “Pinocchio”. The song would peak at the #2 spot, and is their biggest selling single. Awww I remember Sulli’s hat. They made them in different colors to match outfits.
#1 2PM “Hands Up”
This was the title track for the group’s album of the same name, and is their biggest selling song. Promotions for the song would be cut short so that the group could preparing for their Asia tour and promotions in Japan. The only part of the choreo that I remember is where they take a shot lol. Here’s their Music Core comeback stage.
Honorable Mentions
#4 Rainbow “Sweet Dream”
Another summer repackage! A repacked of “So”, that was released a few months prior. This is one of their best charting and highest selling songs. Here’s their performance at an huge outdoor concert. I thought the rain was fake because it all started coming down at the top of the second verse lol what timing. Is that Yoonhye with the short hair? I don’t remember this hair on her.
#10 Sunny Hill “Midnight Circus”
This was their first release after moving to LOEN. “Midnight Circus” was lead single from their EP of the same name. This is the era that I remember most from the group. The teasers featured IU and Gain. But neither of them are in the MV, although Beast/Highlight Kikwang makes a quick appearance.

Date: 2021-07-09 10:59 pm (UTC)with Rainbow, before they start singing you can already see some of the rain so definitely real. Hot Summer is a song I first heard by its original artist Monrose and while f(x) is great they didn't do anything either interesting or better than the original. Midnight Circus was TRULY SH at their peak!! I'm so sad it this sound didn't get them the traction they needed/deserved and miss Jang as an oncamera performance with them.
Speaking of 'Hands Up' tho, while I wasn't personally there myself the OMTD post about it was PACKED with comments: https://omonatheydidnt.livejournal.com/6875739.html?page=1
I'm not sure what caused the decision for this to happen and for damn sure will NOT be going through 200+ pages but feel proud of OMONA all the same LOL

Date: 2021-07-10 12:00 am (UTC)Hands Up is still a great party jam, I remember the guys saying they were so happy they finally got to promote a song that they would also listen to in private.

Date: 2021-07-10 12:31 am (UTC)I had no idea Starlight, Moonlight is Secret's best-selling song! I really like it, and the video is pretty. (It kind of looks like an IU video.)
I liked Hot Summer soooo much more than Pinocchio.
I love that part when they take a shot in Hands Up.
Rainbow 🥺 Sweet Dream 🥺 Jisook 🥺 (Yes, that's Yoonhye, OP)
Midnight Circus was my first Sunny Hill song! I liked this live performance:

Watching Hot Summer, wow Sulli was dancing in high heels in that performance.
I distinctly remember Hands Up as one of the few songs that got the actor crowd in an Acting Awards Show to get riled up and cheer. Back then, any other performance by other groups got a polite applause. I think Mamamoo is another act that made the attendees animated.

Date: 2021-07-11 03:58 am (UTC)Starlight Moonlight wasn't a great title track and I always prefer mature Secret over cutesy Secret, but this was a good follow up to Shy Boy I guess
Hands Up was probably the only 2pm song I've liked and actively added to my playlist, so it holds a special meaning. and I loved that they filmed in a place I recognise and have memories of
