Monsta X look themselves up on Namuwiki and Theqoo, read Youtube comment collections, peruse their own memes, scroll through their career history on Melon, and check their news on Daum.

I cannot believe they read their own namuwiki pages though, I was dying of secondhand embarrassment lmao
Also I am SHOOK that Kihyun's lisp comes from his veneers 🤯

Date: 2021-06-04 05:16 pm (UTC)also not at them asking kihyun to take the veneers off LMAO so mean
this whole thing was really fun and cute
but also the conversation about changkyun clarifying his nationality has caused a controversy on stan twitter. people are taking that what jooheon meant by "it suits you though" as changkyun to be an israeli, not as a foreigner. it's a mess and people are mass emailing sse now

Date: 2021-06-04 08:18 pm (UTC)i saw the link to the email template going around on tumblr, i do think it's a misunderstanding... but i also don't think sse would care

Date: 2021-06-05 05:11 am (UTC)mmm yeah. personally i thought the offhand comment was highly contextual and not narrowing down to him being israeli, it's more of a "foreigner vs local". people are triggered because of the word israel. it wouldn't be just jookyun having to answer it but the channel and video producers if people really want some clarification at some point lmao

Date: 2021-06-04 08:22 pm (UTC)Seriously though why would anyone think that lolol
What??? Oh ffs like I get Israel is a sensitive topic for a lot of the world right now for very good reason but that is a serious reach
Like how are they expected to respond to that? We’re sorry Jooheon said it seemed like I.M could have been born in Israel because he reasonably could have been?? Because that is in fact what he said???
It's going to be awful if he has to apologize and have that splashed all over the news bc twitter literally did not understand what he was talking about. I hate ifan twitter istg

Date: 2021-06-05 06:51 pm (UTC)Yeah it's just no way to escape Changkyun's background and even if they were to address it, dude has to unpack his whole family's background which is so counterproductive. It even escalated to him using the name "Israel" alone is considered bad when that's what's stated on NamuWiki and the name being used in SK. I replied to someone else that I first understood it as "suits [as a foreigner]" and I got attacked for defending him =_=
I don't think we will get an answer since the template that made rounds are only in English and it's like... demanding more than what happened in the video. I just feel like this whole thing is virtue signalling and performative, and this is coming from someone who supports Palestine lol. Changkyun didn't even continue saying that he wants to go back there or whatever. Please instead of sending emails to an idol, invest your energy where it really matters

Date: 2021-06-06 10:29 am (UTC)It's still weird to me that this is a thing at all but thankfully it doesn’t seem to be blowing up very much? I think? I doubt they're going to respond and frankly they shouldn’t have to go on public record and generate bad publicity bc foreigners on twitter are twisting their (translated and decontextualized) words and misusing them for whatever "problematic" narratives they want to push (plus they got triggered by the literal mere mention of Israel I guess). MX/SSE would lose more than they gain and there’s no reason they should have to do that when they didn't actually do something wrong
All that happened here is:
Changkyun: I was not born in Israel/don’t have Israeli nationality
Jooheon: But it suits you/You feel like you were
In the context that Changkyun has talked about living in Israel when he was a baby so some people thought he was born there + MX have talked a ton about how Changkyun doesn’t really think or act like a normative Korean person and he seems like an expat/ foreign born and raised (which he agrees with and even plays up). You really have to reach to find something to be upset about here. Or you know, take it out of context and essentially make shit up to be mad about
And they mentioned Israel bc it’s a place that he lived, how is it a problem that they very superficially acknowledged its connection to his life? With absolutely zero political context? Are you kidding me? Like he did live there, what do they want from him? Do they want him erase or ignore or disavow an innocuous fact about his childhood bc what, they're offended he mentioned living there for a few years as a baby? What, does he have a responsibility to make some sort of statement on the geopolitical complexities of a place he left before he was old enough to form cogent memories? I just can't imagine how divorced from reality you'd have to be to be upset about this
Neither of them should have to apologize and I hope they know that. If twitter idiots can’t be reasoned with and they’re not interested in actually making sense then that sucks but there’s nothing to be done about it, they should just be ignored as much as possible. Let them wear themselves out, we’re moving on with our lives. And I totally agree, they should go do something helpful if they got that much time and brain space to spare. Maybe spend that energy on the institutions and governments who are actually responsible for hurting innocent people and causing these conflicts in the first place. But nah. That’s actually hard and it often takes a lot more intelligence/will than scrolling through social media and sending angry emails to a kpop agency. So better just take it out on public entertainment figures who have no real power and relevance in these issues (and didn't even say anything offensive in the first place and can’t really speak up in their defense) for internet brownie points. God, ifan twitter is a fucking disease 🙄
(And if people are trying to claim Changkyun’s time living in Israel in and of itself is a problem, that’s a whole other host of issues and I’m not going to subject you to any further ranting lol but then they’re dragging his father into it and anyone trying to go there can fuck off and stay fucked)

Date: 2021-06-05 05:16 am (UTC)i already saw the conversation moving into areas of criticising him for using the name israel when... he was addressing what's written on namuwiki (of course, the clip on twitter removes this particular moment).
i think this is beyond an idol's control since (1) kpop idols have less agency compared to western acts and are NOT supposed to be political speakers in the first place until recently (2) sk's political ties with israel (3) changkyun speaking up would be him having to answer for his dad's career as well which is going to be counterproductive and missing the whole point

Date: 2021-06-14 09:56 am (UTC)what, is he supposed to apologize for having lived in the U.S. too? Are we not supposed to mention the names of Canada, Belgium, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Japan, Syria, Estonia, etc. either?! give me a break.
Besides, Changkyun and Jooheon didn't do anything wrong. lmao I'm stumped by this bizarre "controversy"
