I used to look at the charts because when my faves makes it, they're happy so that makes me happy too. But for the past few years, not so much care about charts hehe And I don't know how to properly judge a song. For as long as I like it, I'll listen to it.

I shared here that last March, I resigned from my job. Mid April, I applied to this company I really like and got accepted. Was supposed to start first week of May but the company does hardcore background check (they called all of my previous companies, contacted my school to confirm the credentials I submitted, and confirmed all information I put in my application so yeah that took some time to finish) so pushed to June. I officially start this coming Monday. Glad and happy that its still work from home setup!

Watching the Thai series "I Promised You The Moon" and its really good! A little sad that we're near the finale of "Law School" but excited for new seasons of Hospital Playlist and Penthouse!

hi omona! how have you been? hope you'll have a great weekend ahead of you!

the weather here is really nice now and last weekend i went to the countryside with my parents. everything was so green and flowers were blooming, so the scenery on our hikes were stunning!

i've started teaching my final course of this academic year and it's fun, especially since i got to meet my students in small groups yesterday and got to work with my coworkers! but i am also increasingly frustrated with work because the organization of this course is a mess. my coworker coordinating the course is doing what she can but she is getting hardly any support from the prof who designed the course and does the lectures (and she's not even paid extra for these extra tasks!). ugh. i really feel for her and i'm a bit annoyed because i often have to play the annoying coworker to make sure we are not assigned extra tasks and work that should lie with others. work pressure is rampant in my profession (see: my coworkers and myself having to work the whole weekend to make sure papers are graded on time). our position at the organization is overall very precarious so it's also very difficult to address :(

anyway, i'm hoping to still have time to enjoy the weather a little bit as breaks between grading this weekend. what are your plans?

I've been watching Handsome Tigers. Anyone already watched it? It is interesting what it seems to be revealing about the celebrities, as it's hard to fake a persona in the middle of a tiring game. My opinion of certain people has been evolving, up down back & forth. (I have not watched most of epi 12 still.)

Like, at first it made me like Cha Eun Woo more, because he does work hard and try his best, but midway I can start to see fakeness and manipulation in him. And way into looking a certain way (maybe idols like JB-no-f-cks spoiled me, but JB's not a "visual".) At times he looks like a robot copying other interactions to appear human. But the final games, while still being weirdly obsessed with wearing too much clothing and his hair, he's doubly down on hustling, and this athlete finds that such an attractive trait. (I mean, giggling to the captain about fouling out is a little... But it seems he acts like he's naturally awkward with people and so has developed coping mechanisms to bond...)

I liked the confidence of Kang In Soo at first (and the arms) but he is wearing out his welcome trying to look cool.

The olds have stepped up, and show their personalities much better since they have a bit more fitness. Lee Sang-Yoon remains dreamy, which wow. Even when he started to lose his cool, it was all reasonable and mature-ish. What? Where is the flaw????

It's also that the olds, and Moon Su Inn, seem the least interested in the crowds cheering and most focused on playing. Maybe that's why they're doing the better on the court, when physical fitness/fear of injury doesn't interfere. (I may be projecting, but I'm way way less hardcore than when 23. Everyone I know is. I feel like you can see the in Ji Suk, Julien, etc. There is a fitness component and a "nope, not worth it" component.)

Yoo Seon-ho seems like a sweet guy growing up decently in the spotlight. He's not aggressively pushing himself to improve publicly like Eun Woo, but he's consistently working and seems to have natural charm/EQ with others. The team, even the olds, seem to like him.

Moo Soo In, I can't believe he keeps his cool with some of the defense people have piled on him. I would have gotten into a fight. Also, thank you for freely wandering around shirtless.

Also, I like Seo Jang Hoon a lot more than I used to, now, despite his coaching flaws.

I really wish we got to see female celebrities doing things like this too. Put together a vball team! Let them learn and compete! It's hard, but has less physical contact so less likely to ruin their faces! Start a muscle revolution!

I watched Handsome Tigers! I enjoyed watching it =) I was really impressed with Moon Su Inn and liked Lee Sang Yoon a lot. Baby chick Seonho is just adorable in everything =)

And I get your point about Eunwoo. Its like...he's too unreal sometimes. Maybe that's why I really can't get into being a fan of Eunwoo but he really is handsome and hardworking. He seems like a nice guy but everything he does from acting to how he is in variety shows looks very calculated. I just want to tell him he can let go and loosen up a bit. Even in Master in the House, he's still not very at ease (but I admit I've only watched a few episodes since Sungjae left the show).

I don't really care about charts. I'm always happy when a smaller group gets success on charts, as it obviously means a lot to them and can help them go on. Like how Sorn explained that CLC got more recognition after their win and, while being first on a music show doesn't mean much in itself, it ties with a lot of other opportunities (for performing, etc). But for mainstream groups or mainstream companies? eh. In the end, the music is why I listen to the group.

I had a wonderful week of holidays when I did very close to NOTHING lmao. I slept, ate, and basically lived my life. I saw my grandma (who is fully vaccinated) so that was nice too. And the kitty cat loved being at my parents for a week and having daily access to the garden (and the grass lmao). And before the lazy week, having a small weekend by the ocean was absolutely wonderful, I didn't swim (too cold!) but even just walking on the sand felt great ;__;
But then I came back this Monday to 200+ unread emails and a week-worth of undone work to catch up with lmao. So I already don't feel refreshed anymore.
But! I had news from my HR Dep (after having to run after them, they're so incompetent it's infuriating, I could EASILY go on an hour-long rant about them) and I'll sign my 3-year contract extension next week :)

I've randomly met a friend of a friend in the street the other day, it was really nice to see a familiar face (well, under the mask lol) so randomly like that! All the persons I've seen since covid hit had been because we had plans. I hadn't realized how I didn't have random encounters like that in ages. Super weird, and cool :)

I'm still not vaccinated but a center opened next to my job and doesn't require appointements. A coworker is testing it today, and if it's running smoothly for her, I'll go next week during lunch!

That's a really good point about smaller groups making it on the charts, or veterans who never really topped having an unexpected hit or something! Very different from the top groups and their fans screaming about PAKs and what ever.

Assessing the quality of songs is so subjective (unless it's me declaring a song shitty, THAT is nothing but pure facts and 100% reliable, unerring source, trust me blindly). I hardly ever like what's charting anyway, so to me it's not an issue. I like it tho when BTS chart high because so many people get outraged while half of army are rioting because getting the most is still not getting enough in their eyes. The only parts of BTS songs I tend to like are all Suga's anyway, so I'll just stay in my Suga-stanning lane lmao.

To the OP question: Definitely don’t value charts over quality of the song, most of my all time favorite songs never chart 😅 Most people like to listen to music that doesn’t interest me, so when I do see songs I like that actually chart well I’m like 😧 genuinely astonished lol.


But I have a differing opinion! Long opinion ahead


I do enjoy following Melon’s chart quite a bit. I like looking at the whole chart, looking at what songs have lasted for months or even a year, what songs fell off quickly, what songs slowly rise to the top to who immeasurably goes up. I like to analyze what people are listening to, since it does matter. It gives an impression of what kind of trends to expect from the industry, since new music copies what is popular.

Also speaking of why it matters, the charting and music show wins affect how groups are perceived in recognition. Oh My Girl went from being nugu, then charting well and even pushed further with Queendom, and their last and current comeback charted very well and now their status is very much elevated. They’re a top girl group now in Korea. It’s why Apink still remains because if they weren’t charting like they did for they’re last comeback, I think their company would only want Weeekly at this point since they’re young and fresh. On the flip side, Cube clearly was done with 4minute and just wanted to prioritize Hyuna. Since their song Hate did chart poorly, they had a reason to drop 4minute even though Crazy did fantastic previously. They were going to go ahead with their plan regardless, but now they had an excuse to fall back on. *this is speculation* but I think Gfriend had a similar issue. Not that they were going to be dropped, but I wonder if Gfriend argued for most pay/rights during negotiations during contract renewals and Source argued that since their relevancy with the general public had dropped and weren’t charting like they used to (Mago fell off Melon quickly) that they didn’t deserve it. This is me guessing!!! Not stating as fact.

So I like following Melon at least since I like analyzing it in terms of figuring out what to expect from kpop. But I do care less about Billboard, as I live in the US and I’m aware that people here like really crappy music. Korea and US have that in common, but it’s very much in my face here for the US lol! I only pay attention to Billboard when an artist I like is in the top ranking or there’s drama on ONTD lol. Like here mid-tempo pop with whispery vocals & trap reign supreme. I grew up on bubblegum/dance pop, electronic music, and fun as fuck 2000s hip hop and r&b so a lot of the current top music here just bores me. But also that’s part of me growing up and finding more artists that pertain to my interests, I pay less attention to ‘hot’ music. Fun music is still being made, but it’s just not trendy with the general public. I also think there is a shift coming with music thanks to Tik Tok, it’s fascinating to see what songs take off there!

hi omona! to be honest, i haven't really been doing much better since my last couple of posts in these threads. i've been really depressed and demotivated with everything, especially school, and i'm desperate for the month to end so summer break can start. unfortunately this same day i have a finals paper due for one class, but i'm tuning it out at the moment lol

i finally checked out itzy's comeback from late april, and i expected to not like the title track at least from what i heard about it, but i actually enjoyed it. i mean i don't LOVE it, and it's definitely missing the flair their first three singles had, which not shy was also missing, but idk, mafia has more of its own flair to it. and i like what the first three singles did more, but mafia is cool too. still hate not shy though lol. i also liked the rest of the album - kidding me and shoot are amazing, especially the former, the bass is so good

also i'm obsessed with olivia rodrigo! lol she's really taking over the world. i think she's so cute and her music is really universal imo - the album is very teenage but in a way that not only teenagers can relate to. and her delivery is mature, she gives it her all and i really like that about her. tbh i was a bit disappointed that the album was mostly ballads so i really hope she does more pop punk adjacent stuff like in good 4 u and brutal (which goes SO hard btw), but it's a good album, definitely recommend it

I only care about charts when fans (and mostly bandwagoners at that) are being annoying by trying to act like popularity or quantifiable “success” is some objective metric of quality, value, or merit, especially of something as fundamentally subjective and fickle as the music industry. So actually pretty often ig -_-

Music charts are so meaningless these days though, when anyone can find and enjoy pretty much any music they want from any part of the world. There are so many other means of exposure, publicity and popularity in this day and age, ranking the most ‘popular’ according to an arbitrary standard seems kind of pointless. On a related note, I’ve been on the the ‘abolish music show #1s’ train for years now lol. Like what is even the point anymore, they’re functionally obsolete fandom propaganda and more than anything, they're tools for networks to flex undue influence over artists/agencies. But they’re probably too symbolically and politically important to go away any time soon

It's been a good while since I stopped by, but my bss are coming back so I must spread the joy. I'm so happy Haseulie is back; 18 months is a lifetime in kpop and I'm so glad her need for time to adress her issues was respected the way it was. I hope not much pressure is placed on her shoulders though; I've alreadsyseen many comments saying how they want her as main vocalist for all the songs; I just want her to take it easy so she can be comfortable performing again.

I've been planning a youtube channel/podcast for the duration of the year or so, and I'm finally gonna take the plunge. I'm going to do it alone, but I hope I can get one of my cousins on board with me; she is such a personable and charming girl that it would make it so much more enjoyable that if I did it alone. YES I'm so happy about Haseul too!!! I nearly cried lol. I really hope she doesn't have too much pressure on her, I'm honestly nervous that she's (apparently?) fully back into promoting unlike Mina and Jeongyeon for example who kept the photoshoots/MVs. That's going to be a lot to handle at the same time. I want her to feel comfortable too.
BBC is clearly aware of the hype though, they wouldn't have dropped her teaser first otherwise.

I don't remember anything new about Daesung's accident specifically. More likely suspicion — how can we trust anything that happened with this investigation now that we have proof of YG bribing police and getting away with various ilegal activities for years?
But about Daesung, it was revealed that he owned a business where prostitution was taking place. He got away by claiming he wasn't aware of his tenants' activities. So either an asshole like the rest, either a very dumb building owner (how do you not check the business happening inside a building you're buying???).

I had to tune out of the Burning Sun/molka chat scandal for my own sake at one point. I don't think Seungri is behind bars. I hope someone more up to date can help you!

To answer the question, idc about charts but you do music for people to listento it. It's Always pleasant to have good scores.
I also don't get the quality aspect. You love the music you love. I really dislike a lot of songs that are very popular but I don't go around telling everyone they shouldn't like it or that they have bad taste. I don't have that kind of ego tbh (I'm also confident so other opinions while interesting don't always have impact on me).
Defining what's "quality" is a bit like defining beauty — you need a lot of aloofness and understanding of the society dogmas in the first place. That's how I view it.

taste is subjective, and my taste is bad so i can't answer the "quality" aspect of that question. 😂 if i cared about charts, then i'd probably be in a state of constant distress bc a lot of my faves don't chart high at all, lol. it's nice to see songs i like get a good position, but at the end of the day it's just not that big of a deal to me!

i put an organizer in my closet so it looks all nice and neat now. i had shelves to go with it but have no need for them in there now, so i'm gonna buy some brackets later to put them on my wall(s)!! i have boxes of clothes and boxes of CDs/DVDs/books to unpack this weekend, lol.

mentally, i feel Not Great and need to seriously consider seeing a therapist tbh?? i'm hesitant for a lot of reasons.

It's normal to feel hesitant! It can feel like a big step and there are always reasons to be found. Having been in therapy myself, and having changed therapists before, I highly recommand you to try it. Once you find a therapist that you trust and whose methods fit what you're looking for, it makes a very big difference in your life. The key is finding the therapist, which might not happen right away (for me, it took a few tries).
Feel free to ask questions if you have some! I only have my experience to talk about and some anecdotes from friends who also went to therapy, but for me talking about it with people who have been there helped making the first step.

charts...hmm I care about them in terms of being a tool for less popular groups to gauge their growth or when something like Rolling exploding happens. When someone is so big that they're guaranteed continued success it's not interesting to me where they place. and like charts aren't a complete picture of an artists popularity.

my sabbaticals coming to an end this month. Idk how ready I am to get back to work full time but taking 6 months off has been the best thing I've done for myself. the province is moving up the 2nd dose timeline so at least when I am working I'll be fully vaxxed.

as a listener i couldn’t care less how a song charts but as a supporter i obviously hope my favorite artists achieve what it is they want to achieve. the quality part i can’t answer cause liking music is so subjective (that’s why comparing songs by different artists just doesn’t make sense...)
