From now on The Show Choice will be based on:

40% Digitals
10% Albums
20% Video Score
15% Broadcast Score
*15% Live Text Voting* (requires KR phone number) - This is now a larger percentage

They've removed pre-voting completely. For comparison, originally the winning criteria was:

40% Digitals
10% Albums
20% Video Score
15% Broadcast Score
*5% Pre-voting* - this was cut
10% Live Text Voting (requires KR phone number)

Why international fans are upset: Even though just 5%, Pre-voting was a way for fans of groups that are not popular in Korea but popular internationally to support their fave. Now that option is gone as the app company they were using for that purpose has cut ties. To win now it’ll be more important to have fans in Korea.

UPDATE: Included in comments is new statement that they’re going to revise the criteria to include global fans again

I never knew the criteria before. Digitals is really high, which for a show that the groups who actually chart really don’t care about....idk I think that should be lower. BTS, Blackpink, Twice, Itzy, etc don’t care about The Show. Maybe they should embrace that The Show is valued by mid-tier and nugu groups. Unless they want to move away from that reputation?

I didn't know this either. I think you're correct that they're trying to become a more acclaimed show, but I don't think that's gonna happen, so they should follow your advice and embrace the fact that they're a more niche show that provides a great platform for mid-tier and nugu groups.

That sucks. The Show is the only music show where U-KISS won an award, and it was a fan voted award.

I know full well this will never happen for a bunch of reasons but they should really just get rid of the ranking/winning structures on music shows. They make no sense in the modern era and have basically become an arms race between idol fandoms like what's even the point anymore

tbh i never thought about getting rid of the awards altogether but i agree. right now kpop is an oligopoly and it's just boring. i don't want to see bts, twice, blackpink and survival shows groups win every week. basically the only groups who win on bigger shows are those that don't need it.

I mean, the whole thing is a relic from the pre-internet 90s when music shows were one of the only ways for artists to market/perform in front of a mainstream audience and determine popularity but obviously it's all pretty much superfluous now. And yeah, idols and their dedicated fandoms have completely taken over the entire genre. Do non-idols even perform anymore?

But broadcast stations/PDs are never going to let go of the relative power it gives them over artists/agencies (and the artists/agencies also benefit from the networking) so those awards aren't going away anytime soon (I was honestly shocked when they got rid of them at the broadcast network gayos)

also, don't companies shell out like... 80K to have their artist perform? I remember some idol mentioned that when asked by fans why they don't perform on music shows. It's just not realistic to have a ton of music show performances when there is no money to be made from it.

I mean. Does it really matter? I just always figured stuff is rigged, even these basic voting shows. And even then, ridiculous fans buying 10 versions of an album or companies buying albums to boost sales numbers happens so it's not very clear. why do we need a winner?

I would rather we get a joint encore stage. I know that would likely be more work but even MC's stage at the end to perform a medley of sorts would be nice.

The Show was never...I mean go off.

I know that k pop fans want to win these for the group, but all that told me is that fans found a way to game the system which doesn’t really help the group get anything but a trophy. These weekly shows were hardly prestige (especially TUESDAY and Wednesday middle of the week shows)...but I remember when an award meant the song was doing well and not just fandom power. Great for the moment but it’s not a hit single and further recognition which is what they actually need. Not to be a Negative Nathaniel.
