It seems like JYPE didn't want all 7 of them to renew...?? Idk I thought this would be interesting to share, idk does it matter tho.

it's okay. i didn't think the correction would blow up, but basically they only wanted to renew some contracts and not all 7 of them, so negotiations broke down because the members only wanted to renew as 7.

the trademark only refers to their own personal names and stage names. the group name is still trademarked to JYPE and will be until 2024.

If you look up the Beast/Highlight situation you can read how it turned out. Got7 members would have to fight for it once the trademark expires. It will be expensive and difficult. Not only that but they'll have to renegotiate a bunch of stuff regarding music registrations and copyright ownership.

edit: it looks like it would have expired this fall but JYPE renewed it.

to add, they could technically register the trademark in territories that JYPE doesn't have it but they can only use it in those countries which is hella confusing for everyone involved. the easiest route if they want to keep working together is a new name or lots of money to buy it off JYPE and renegotiate anything attached to it.

Correct me if I'm wrong because I'm not fluent in Korean but this situation seems different than Highlight's? The revised article seems to imply that regardless of who renewed the trademark, the rights need to be transferred to the artist after the termination of the contract, including the name of the group itself since its their creative entity along with their stage names ,etc. I think they go beyond Article 8, hence the Daum article, but again I'm not fluent and it'd be helpful to get the input of a translator.

JYPE was also very careful in how they worded their last statement. If they still had trademark rights after Jan 19th they could easy state the members have left the company and "GOT7" is officially disbanded - but they didn't. In fact, nowhere in the statement do they refer to them as anyone other than "GOT7". EDIT: I just checked and JYPE /had/ to renew because Korea changed the official trademark time to 10 years.

Copyright is a whole different story though, I don't think they'll be able to use their old discography (unless they "cover" their own music ala Highlight with B2ST lmao).

The Korean post author is using their own interpretation of the article to mean the group name when it doesn't mention covering the group name at all. They updated the clause for stage names/real names so that companies can't block individuals from using their own names in the future, because that happens and is why some entertainers have to change them. It's also why some agencies trademark different spellings of names or add spaces to stylize them if there are multiple people with the same name.

Shinhwa is another example to look at, they had to fight for the trademark but it took 12 years.

Companies don't explicitly say disband in some cases because they can continue to still make money off the name. It's why SNSD hasn't been disbanded but haven't had a full group comeback in years. As long as JYPE thinks they can still make some money off the group they'll keep the trademark active. It depends on the companies MO with the group in the long term.


I don't want to squash hope, they could in fact work something out with JYPE or move forward with another group name but the groupname just isn't automatically changed over to members to use however they want.

I've watched the performances on YouTube.
Not By the Moon perf looked a bit messy to me. The back up dancers were rather unnecessary and just got in the way imo.

Breathe was more fun, they are really great at the 'we're having fun' vibe.

I'm still not fully processing that we're not gonna see them together performing like this again.

Overall I'm so happy for them, they've left their mark on people and the industry and I know they'll continue to do well.

It hasn't been long but I'm glad that GOT7 were the group to get me back into kpop. I decided prior after so much drama with other groups that I'd only be a casual listener and then I found GOT7 and that all went down the drain. But I don't regret it, I'm sure that they were the only group who could've done it. I really feel like I've never liked any other group in the same way or as much. They're the only group I've even considered travelling to see and I've met so many people because of them ;~;
