Why Does "Go High" Stand Out?
If this song isn't on your workout playlist, I'm assuming you're weak and frail. This is a fun, high energy dance track that is a strong contender for one of my favourites off of this Mini Album after the title track (which is also a fantastic high-energy track). SF9 has been killing it this year and this follow up to their first full album that was released in January is a really solid pop release. These guys do high-energy pop so well.
Protip: This album is strangely hard to find on streaming platforms. You'll have to search by the album name only in order to quickly find it. It is on Spotify, Apple Music, and YouTube.
GFRIEND - 눈의 시간 (EYE OF THE STORM)

Why Does "Eye of the Storm" Stand Out?
This song has way more of a Jpop feel than Kpop, but it's done so well and is so addictive. It's dreamy, light, somewhat frantic, and sounds like it could be on the soundtrack to an anime or a video game. The vocal performance on the track floats above the music in such a pleasing way and contributes to this song being an all around joy to listen to. I promise it won't bore you. If you're a fan of Dreamcatcher, I suspect you'll enjoy this wonderful offering from GFriend.

Why Does "Dream in a Dream" Stand Out?
It's weird! If you're generally a fan of the weirder songs that Kpop occasionally serves up, this one might be for you. It starts off with SHINee - Orgel vibes and then transitions into something you might hear from a second-rate group in 2010 (it honestly reminds me slightly of Biri Bom Beri Bom at certain points). It's both creepy and poppy but somehow it works and makes for an intriguing listen.

TAEMIN - STRANGERS

Why Does "Strangers" Stand Out?
Taemin has some really fantastic understated songs and this is one of them. It's smooth, dynamic, catchy, atmospheric, and weighty. It sounds like it would be the opening song to a gritty HBO drama about a murder in a small town. Act 1 isn't the most cohesive piece of work Taemin has put out, so this song kind of sits in the middle of the track list as a pretty moody standalone while the rest of the album experiments with some different energy. I personally feel like it's the strongest song on the album after "Criminal".
STRAY KIDS - 토끼와 거북이 THE TORTOISE AND THE HARE

Why Does "The Tortoise and the Hare" Stand Out?
One sick beat and some interesting vocal choices. It's definitely not what you might expect from a KPop group. Throw this one into the "weird" category along with "Dream in a Dream".

Why Does "Dawn (Dawn)" Stand Out?
I know next to nothing about this group but this has got to be one of my favourite KPop releases of 2020. The breakdown in the pre-chorus where the music falls away and we get a little acoustic guitar that slowly takes us into the echoey and groovy chorus is so simple but feels so unique compared to the rest of the releases we've been given this year. The vocals are divine on the chorus. The contrast between the voices of the rappers and the vocalists is actually really interesting. This is one of the best Kpop songs of the year that you aren't listening to yet. Thank me in the comments and then check out the other gem from this album, "Stop The Clock"!

Date: 2020-12-20 01:25 pm (UTC)Also Song of the Sirens is SUCH A STRONG MINI ALBUM. Eye of the Storm is amazing and definitively my no1 bside from it but everything else is great too. GFriend really outdid themselves this year!
August wasn't the best but I really enjoyed Twinkle Star by Rocket Punch and Break the Wall by Dreamcatcher (my inner emo teen ate that up) so I wouldn't call it tragic XD

the last 2 months i've done a deep dive in sf9's discography and i'm in deep. i think from 9loryUS, i prefer into the night, which is a good pick me up song, and all day all night to go high!
