i wonder how that’ll go considering they already have melon n other platforms — reminds me of them opening, what was it, sephora? did it even do well?

ah great, they're bringing their predatory model to korea. :/

i'm not sure how the payouts work for korea's existing streaming services, but i'd like to think they're at least a little better than spotify.

nah most streaming platforms work the same way and pay about the same. there was legislature a while ago trying to get through to get SK artists paid more. idt it passed. Spotify coming in has a lot of them scared so they're quickly trying to change it so artists want to stay on their platforms.

this is what happens when the music industry focused so heavily on pirating instead of creating alternative models, tech startups got the jump on them and they never recovered.

i'm a little surprised this is happening bc it seems like they have their own platforms there that are in solid standing and are tied to awards for charting and stuff, but then again i'm a total newbie so who knows

That’s a good point, they’ll have to take this chart into account now (depending if enough people use it)

I find this very interesting, if it’ll be competition for Melon or because it’s foreign based maybe they won’t be as interested

I can expect certain artists to have a big jump in regular followers/listeners, especially for ones that do really well in Korea but either have a smaller global fanbase or very little impact outside of Korea. Like Oh My Girl’s fanbase outside Korea isn’t much but with Spotify we might see quite a jump since OMG had such a big year in Korea this year. Also IU and Twice who are very well known in Korea could have quite an increase in listeners

Apple music basically plateaued there so idk if Spotify will have any better an impact. Especially this late in the game in terms of streaming services, people already have years worth of playlists and stuff saved. They'd really have to do something drastic to make a shift.

Maybe it might have a better chance than Apple since Apple Music plateaued here too? I don’t know anyone personally who uses Apple Music tbh, whereas when wrapped results came out my friends and I were sharing results since we regularly use it

But that’s a good point, I only use Spotify and sometimes SoundCloud to find stuff I can’t on Spotify. Otherwise I have no real need for another streaming app

I had the opposite experience lol. But I’m glad you like it, I didn’t particularly like it. Whatever I couldn’t find on Spotify I couldn’t on Apple either, so that’s why I just use SoundCloud since users upload content.

I think if Spotify promotes themselves as having a bigger worldwide catalogue and focuses on how their market integration is at unparalleled levels it will work.
As it stands Spotify is looked at as a trendsetter so Korea being big into trends will likely give it more of a chance than they did Apple Music.

Spotify is a brand name now. Apple Music hasn’t achieved that yet.

I'm surprised it took them so long to set up in Korea, but wonder if they'll bring the social/video part to Korea in a bid to differentiate themselves
