"SM Entertainment Square" ― named after one of the biggest K-pop entertainment agencies in Korea ― has been established in Los Angeles (LA) to honor the company's founder and executive producer Lee Soo-man.
The LA city council designated the intersection of 6th Street and Oxford Avenue the "SM Entertainment Square" on Oct. 28, SM said Friday.
The company added that a sign which reads, "SM ENTERTAINMENT SQUARE, Pioneer of the Korean Wave and the global K-pop phenomenon, In honor of Founder Soo Man Lee," will soon be put up at the square.
"It is the first time for a Korean entertainment company's name to be used in the name of a symbolic street in the U.S.," the music label said in a statement. "We are planning to open our entertainment complex 'SMT LA' on the square to promote Korean culture and lifestyle."
Park Kyung-jae, the consul general for LA was quoted as saying: "I hope 'SM Entertainment Square' becomes a hub of Korean entertainment in LA, home to the movie and culture industry. Just like Times Square in New York, I expect 'SM Square' to attract young people from all around the globe."
LA City Councilman Herb Wesson said he respected the contributions that SM and Lee made to K-pop's globalization.
Founded in 1989, SM launched a plethora of big-name K-pop acts including TVXQ, Super Junior, Girls' Generation, SHINee, EXO, Red Velvet, NCT and SuperM.
...I am not calling it that. Should have named it after Ahgassi Gopchang, it's done more for the neighborhood tbh.
