I'm only at "Up No More" but I already love "Hell In Heaven" ! And the chorus on "Up No More" is totally the kind of thing I love listening to while getting up !
besides the title my favourites are probably do what we like, up no more and behind the mask. i like the verses and prechorus more than the chorus for do what we like but its immediately the most catchy song to me. i thought i would hate go hard but i actually really like it parts of the verses remind me of oh!gg's lil touch. i'm a sucker for cute songs so i also love depend on you even though i think some of the production choices at the chorus are questionable.
the rest are good but don't stand out as much on first listen i need to give this album a few more listens.
hell in heaven i like as something different but i don't know how much repeat value it has for me. i don't know how i feel about bring it back at all i think i maybe don't like it for now but i'll see if it grows on me.
Honestly this is a damn near perfect album for me; just the cohesiveness and production level solidifies this as AOTY (though think it might benefit from cutting 1-2 songs).
Their music has evolved so much, and they’ve grown as a group and performers, it’s apparent in this album.
They’re leaning VERY heavily into dance pop and electro pop with this one, and while I’m happy with their musical growth and evolution as artists, it does make me feel a tad nostalgic for their earlier days owo. These are just my early initial thoughts of the album and they’ll probably change over time:
Hell in Heaven is an album highlight, it’s just so far removed from anything they’ve done, similar to when Love Foolish was released and everyone lost their minds. Handle It is lush and so distinctly Chaeyoung. Even if I’m not fond of some of her other penned songs I have to admit they all have a certain.,, je ne sais quoi about them lol. Up No More is insanely fun, but I expected nothing less from Jihyo. I said this before but it feels like something Carly Rae Jepsen or Kylie Minogue would release and I love it for that reason. Bring it Back succeeds in creating a certain atmosphere and I like it for the most part but that bass drop is strange and out of place for me. Believer is also a win for me. It’s just so fun and jaunty and that’s all I ask for sometimes lol. Bring It Back was a blip when it comes to Dahyun penned songs but Queen brings it back (heh) because i LOVE it. Like??? Yes after the shit year we’ve just had, I DO just want Twice to call me a queen. The line “Just a shell” will be stuck in my head for the next week or so, so thx for that Dahyun. Go Hard reminds me too much of that one Jason Derulo song and for that reason I dislike it even though there actually quite a lot of aspects to it I like lmao. Shot Clock is too repetitive, similar to Stuck in my Head. I know it’s supposed to be a rallying hype song but I’d take Touchdown over this any day. Depend on You reminds me of a chainsmokers song (this is coming from a person who has only heard One chainsmokers song lol). I kind of love it though?? I’m not a huge ballad fan but Behind the Mask is lovely. Say Something is city pop so of course I was going to love it. More of this in the next album, please.
All in all, this album blows Twicetagram out of the water. Even the songs that I’m not fond of I can see having quite a bit of replay value. Shot Clock is already weirdly growing on me.
Overall first impressions, under a cut since it’s kinda long
Hell in Heaven - I like the song in theory and concept, but it’s not really my taste. But I saved it since it could grow on me
Up No More - love it ❤️ It’s such a fun track!
Do What We Like - I like it way more than I expected! It’s a fun bop
Bring It Back - Same as DWWL, I like it more than the teaser let on. I really enjoy the verses! But the drop in the chorus drops the ball for me and kinda kills the mood. I would’ve loved this much more with a real chorus but I still like the rest of it
Believer - Might be my favorite track after Say Something and Handle It!! I love the overall vibe
Queen - Pretty good! There’s songs that leave a stronger impression but I’m feeling it, I see this growing on me
Go Hard - I like it more than I expected, not my favorite but I’m enjoying it. But for a track with that name, it could’ve gone harder tbh
Shot Clock - she cute but she’s also the one I’m feeling the least lol. It’s alright, a nice successor to Touchdown but this song doesn’t really add anything to the experience. So it’s filler, but better filler than Twice’s previous filler tracks lol
Handle It - YES PLEASE. I love how smooth this is. I think these type of songs like this and Make Me Go cater to Twice as they aren’t a vocal heavy group. The vocals here are serviceable and the mood they wanted to achieve was set.
Depend On You - It’s nice. Didn’t leave a strong impression on me but it’s growing on me already.
Say Something - MY CITY POP SONG!!!!! I’m obsessed omg I love it. Yukika Queen please cover it 🥺
Behind the Mask - It’s an interesting track, especially since the lyrics can be a play on the pandemic situation we’re in. Overall I like it! It’s something different for Twice. I am biased since Heize wrote lyrics for this one and I really like her lol.
Overall I’m very satisfied right now, huge improvement over their first full album! But they’re senior group now with experience, they’ve made a lot of progress in their overall content :) I’m glad Twice fans seem very proud of “Eyes wide open”, as they’re the main audience I’m glad there’s a lot of excitement for this album.
i just started listening on Spotify, will edit once i'm done!
edit; i think they definitely picked the right title track, it's my favorite song! i also really like queen, go hard and shot clock. especially shot clock could have been their title track, too. i really enjoyed it bring it back and handle it were my least favorites, the songs just didn't vibe with me
it's a lot more retro than I expected, and not very bubblegumpop-y. Up No More and Believer are the standouts to me, though I Can't Stop Me is the best song. Say Something sounds a lot better here than the live, so I'm liking it too (the live vocals were too much of a struggle)
First time listening: Up No More is it for me, with Handle It/Go Hard sharing the second place. I'll need a second listening esp for Bring It Back. That beat drop, maaan.
Overall, I get a sense that this album is a bit all over the place? Like, it can use better track-listing. The first three tracks alone are synthpop/disco - Latin pop - disco. Since the Republic Rec signing, Twice's music direction has been... interesting, in lack of better words. They're exploring new territories but there's still enough Twice signature to recognize in the music. This album is an improvement from M&M, but no stronger than FM.
on first listen i didnt pay attention to which song is which until i got to shot clock and had to change that immediately. terrible. but then handle it right after it was an amazing palate cleanser. stand out track for me so far. + say something and hell in heaven
I really like it. I'm not that much into GG but Twice may change my mind ! There are a lot of different styles.
Definitely "Hell In Heaven" is my favorite. And I have a soft spot for "Queen". "Up No More" is catchy. "I Can't Stop Me" and "Say Something" are the 80's bops I needed.
For slower songs, I love "Handle It" and "Behind The Mask"
Too bad the lyrics on the "Bring It Back" chorus are... not there ? because I really like the electro melody.
‘ I'm not that much into GG but Twice may change my mind !’
Us girl group fans:
Bring It Back has a lot of elements I lik a lot! But it really needed a chorus. They could’ve saved that drop for something else or just skipped it entirely
Omona has a very active group of members who listen to GGs only (or in majority at least lmao) so if you ever want to dig in deeper, you could name your favourite GG tracks in a FFA for example and you'll get tailored suggestions in return :)
You could probably name your favorite BG tracks and get some good GG recommendations, too. There's a lot of crossover between the songs I like from both
Well I have to isolate myself at work to write reports, I'll play this over and come back to edit with some thoughts! 13 tracks though omg that's a long album
So my first (and second!) impressions, the stand outs are: I Can't Stop Me, Hell In Heaven, Up No More, Handle It, Depend On You, Say Something, Behind the Mask, aka half of the album lmao. Do What We Like is growing on me too. The album starts and closes on very strong notes, but that also means that the middle of it drags a little bit for me. It needed either a different track order (in pure Soshi-style lmao, their album track order are often a mess) or to remove maybe two bsides. Vocals could be better processed at times too, but that's something I think about all JYP productions, I'm not holding it against them. Overall, I'm really happy with this album. I'm not even listening in a very attentive way, since I'm working at the same time, but a bunch of bsides still managed to stand out, and I think it's better overall than Twicetagram (which had stand-outs but also a bunch of fillers for me). I'm really enjoying the direction Twice has taken with their sound.
Hell in Heaven: I love it from the first play through. It reminds me a bit of Love Foolish, not in sounds (they're both very different songs) but in directions. They're both sexier and more experimental that a track I would expect from Twice. I can very easily get used to this side of Twice.
Up No More: One of my biases is retro-influenced tracks, so this is right up my alley. I love it, very groovy and catchy.
Do What We Like: It didn't grab my attention the way the previous two bsides did on first listen. It sounds like it could have been released ealier. It's very fun though, and I can see this growing on me - actually it's already growing on me on second play through.
Bring It Back: I enjoyed the sexy, moody opening despite its instrumental not being my favourite pop genre, but then, the drop happened. Hmm. I guess it's just not my style! I appreciate what they were trying to do though.
Believer: I have very similar feelings as Do What We Like. I really liked Jihyo's vocals on the post-chorus(?), she sounds very smooth here.
Queen: Mixed, though generally positive feelings about this one! I like the verses, the "just a show(?)" line is very catchy and it's overall pretty nice. I just feel that the flow during the chorus is a little off? I feel bad because Dahyun worked on this one :'D I can see it growing on me though.
Go Hard: I ... actually expected this one to go harder? lmao. Also not exactly my style, I won't play it often.
Shot Clock: Again, not my favourite bside. This one is a little too repetitive and they've already done this kind of brass-oriented dance tracks. But at the same time I see exactly which playlist I'm going to put this song in though, so it will get plays from me lol.
Handle It: Now we're back to strong bsides! I'm really digging this vibe. Chill and smooth. They're not the best vocalists but they feel earnest, and this is no exception, I think they did well to convey the feel of the song. Nice piano touches leading to the outro.
Depend On You: We're back to my pop biases, this time a kind of sweet, guitar-driven pop tracks. It doesn't reinvent the style, in fact it's quite predictable, but I'm enjoying it. I just need my regular fix of comforting little kpop tunes lol.
Say Something: Yes citypop! I've been waiting for Twice to do it since Sunset hinted at how great of a match it could be. It flows like a dream. Again I feel like they did a nice job, everything is very sweet, including their delivery. I really like the sax then the instrumental fading out during the outro, it's such a nice little detail.
Behind The Mask: I was tricked into thinking this would morph into a ballad (especially with it being the album closer), or at least a slow track... and it is, somehow. But after subdued verses, the chorus is suddenly very retro? In a darker direction that the beginning of the album though, nice contrast. I'm enjoying it. It just feels too short, I think a bigger bridge/pay-off would have elevated it.
There are no bad songs here! I love this album so much. Half of the album could be singles on their own. Up No More, Believer, Queen, Depend On You, Say Something and Behind the Mask are my favorites. Can't wait to get my copy!
ok my impressions!! overall. very solid album and although the retro sound cannot be strong enough for me, it's conceptually strong leaning on electropop beats. i'm suprised that i actually like the slower tracks much more than the up tempo ones
my absolute faves: i can't stop me - so good, but wish the instrumentals went harder?? it's a little bit better in the spotify version than the mv i think believer - soooo smooooooth and chill say something - a chill citypop song to listen to and pretend i am driving along the coastline in a car i don't have? can't go wrong behind the mask - oooh yeah up no more - fun up tempo track
This album is rock solid and a MOMENT!! My faves are Say Something, Handle It and the one-two punch of Bring it Back and Believer, with Believer as my ABSOLUTE fave. The first time I heard I screamed 'ARE YOU JOKING? ARE YOU JOKING?!' outloud a few times. Now, that was a lot but I'm also at my own home by myself so it was fine LOL
i really like this album. i don't love every single track but everything flows so nicely together that even bland-er tracks come across as solid tracks. it's a very cohesive album which is rather rare in kpop. it really feels like this album had an actual idea behind it instead of slapping tracks together. so whoever polished final tracklist did a good job! "do what we like" is my absolute favorite. it's hard to pick other favorites upon first listen but if i had to choose some of my most favorite tracks then i'd add title track, queen, handle it and behind the mask (what a great outro track).
yes, same! I'm really bad with listening to albums in order sometimes bc i'll listen to it on first listen in order but then a lot of it can feel jarring so I just pick my favourites and then don't listen to the full album, but I can see myself going through this entire album even with the weaker songs (for now! it takes me a few more listens for some songs) bc it's so cohesive.
Queen and Behind the Mask are some of my favs too. I just finished listening to Behind the Mask and I had my 'repeat' on for spotify so the album looped back around and it worked so well.
in kpop i developed a bad habit of cherry picking tracks and then deleting the rest so quite often i can't even remember how the album itself sounded like. f.e. i always say that "page two" is my favorite twice album but do i even know what tracks are on it aside from the 2 that i adore? nope. so i really appreciate the albums that feel like... albums. when tracklist is put well together - you can actually grow to like some tracks that seemed boring at first as they work within the structure of whole album and you don't just go ahead and delete them 1min in lol. hopefully this wasn't an accident and jype actually knew what they were doing with this album. i want more of this!
ohhh absolutely! i'm impatient like that too so sometimes it'll take me a while to go back to an album and realize: wait what? I didn't like this song?? and there'll be songs that'll feel fresh/new just bc I haven't heard it in so long in not putting it on my playlists!
making the album flow like this would be great if they keep it going! :) & the 2nd listen of the album for me was fantastic too!
This whole sound is giving me flashbacks to the Wonder Girls 'Reboot' comeback. I'm not mad. JYPe clearly has a strong creative arm in retro/niche sounds.
That being said... Hell In Heaven is even better than I expected it to be. This is easily in their top 5 best songs. It feels like a sequel to Firework.
It's a shame we wont physically see Jeongyeon during this comeback because her vocals on this album are, bar none, the best she's ever sounded. The doll is singing in full caps lock and I NEED MORE.
Pushing Momo into a rap direction is something they should've done YEARS ago. She's got the stage presence for it.
ooh, this is my first Twice album & it's really solid! i'm very pleasantly surprised!
I expected Hell in Heaven to be one of my favs and it is! Up No More, Say Something, & Queen are my other favourites - this is a really good album. really put me in a great mood as I was listening to it and I can see myself listening to it on repeat. :)
There's a few songs I'm not into that much, but this is the most cohesive full album I've seen from a girl group in a while, so it def deserves AOTY.
Hell in Heaven - Love it, tbh! Up No More - Also love it. Do What We Like - I expected it to have an annoying drop a'la More and More... but I like it, it didn't go where I thought it would. Bring It Back - Eh, I got nothing. Believer - It reminds me of Spice Girls after Geri left lmao. Not a bad thing tho! Queen - It's ok after first listen. I feel like it'll either grow on me big time or I'll end up hating it lmao Go Hard - I'm good, tbh. Shot Clock - It's like if Itzy was covering Bang Bang by Jessie J/Ariana/Nicki. Sounds dated and not in a retro way. I'll pass. Handle It - It sounds like that one song from A Cinderella Story lmao. But I do like it a lot. Depend on It - No thoughts, tbh. It's there. Say Something - Yas pls! Love it. Behind the Mask - As far as ballads go, I like it. I definitely hear Dua's input.
i see that a number of people have mentioned that the second half of the album is weaker and more filler-ish (or downright not good; looking at you, shot clock) before handle it and i'm inclined to agree. very solid album on the whole, though!
stand-outs for me are: title, hell in heaven, up no more, say something, behind the mask
i'm clearly biased towards the retro-sounding tracks....

Date: 2020-10-26 06:53 pm (UTC)so i really appreciate the albums that feel like... albums. when tracklist is put well together - you can actually grow to like some tracks that seemed boring at first as they work within the structure of whole album and you don't just go ahead and delete them 1min in lol. hopefully this wasn't an accident and jype actually knew what they were doing with this album. i want more of this!

Date: 2020-10-26 06:03 pm (UTC)That being said...

Date: 2020-10-26 06:24 pm (UTC)I expected Hell in Heaven to be one of my favs and it is! Up No More, Say Something, & Queen are my other favourites - this is a really good album. really put me in a great mood as I was listening to it and I can see myself listening to it on repeat. :)

Date: 2020-10-26 10:42 pm (UTC)Hell in Heaven - Love it, tbh!
I feel like it'll either grow on me big time or I'll end up hating it lmao
Go Hard - I'm good, tbh.

Date: 2020-10-27 01:24 pm (UTC)stand-outs for me are: title, hell in heaven, up no more, say something, behind the mask
i'm clearly biased towards the retro-sounding tracks....
