Jessica’s Debut Novel “Shine” Makes New York Times’ Best Sellers List

Last month, Jessica published her very first novel, “Shine,” which tells the story of a Korean-American teenager trying to achieve her dream of becoming a K-pop star. Even before it hit the shelves, there were already plans for a film adaptation of the novel, and as “Shine” is part of a two-book deal, a sequel is also already in the works.

The New York Times has now published its famous Best Sellers list for the week dated October 18 (which reflects sales for the week ending on October 3), and “Shine” debuted at No. 5 on the Young Adult Hardcover list.

I feel really old because the only things I could think of while reading involved the complete passivity of the adults "WHAT ARE THE ADULTS DOING ? WHERE ARE THE ADULTS ? WHY THIS ADULT IS DOING THAT ?" like what the actual fuck chapter 3. And Rachel would have NEVER stayed this long in a real company.

I was so annoyed through the book but I can't wait to read the sequel.

i finished the book in 3 hours LOL and i've already forgotten most of the points, so i guess i need to re-skim it before the discussion.
tbh i felt the book dragged, but overall at least it's a bit darker (?) than most similar ya themes.

I'm glad it's doing well. I had heard Simon & Schuster were pushing this pretty hard so good to see the efforts paid off. I was irritated that my local Target shoved the book in YA when it should have been in the new section. So being the dick I am, I shoved some shit aside and put Jessica and Mariah's book (They did Queen Mimi dirty by putting her at the bottom) up top in a spot where people will see it.

I'm at the half way point and honestly I'm really enjoying it so far, it's mindless, cliche fluff and I love it and I don't hate the writing as much as I thought I would so bonus! I hope I finish it before book club, I am flying through it when I pick it up so I think I will and then hopefully I can move on to Addie LaRue and start to get out of this reading rut I'm in.
