from my understanding it was more that enough fans were willing to boycott the main group if he remained than anything else so Starship wanted to avoid that without forcing him out of the industry/company
v late comment but wonho wanted to leave mx because he didn't want to damage their reputation and he said so in the letter (https://www.soompi.com/article/1362750wpp/wonho-writes-letter-to-fans-following-departure-from-monsta-x) that was posted when he left (“The members have nothing to do with me. I carefully ask that you at least give support and encouragement to the members.”)
but at the same time, wonho was never going to the be the first in monsta x to get a solo. he didn't have solo activities outside of photoshoots and his first mostly solo tv appearance (with just one other mx member) aired the day before he left the group so i think it was starship cutting their losses by letting him leave but also, like? it is confusing and i still don't really understand it, either. i think he could've very well also sat out for a comeback and that wouldn't have made a different w/ the gp (since mx doesn't have the cleaniest rep to knetz, anyway)
