In this series I want to go through groups that are gone, but not forgotten. I will go from debut till disbandment or [indefinite] hiatus, remembering the time we had together and look back on their highs and lows.

I.O.I

I.O.I (also known as IOI or Ideal of Idol) was a South Korean girl group formed by CJ E&M through the 2016 reality show Produce 101 on Mnet. The group was composed of eleven members from various entertainment companies: Lim Na-young, Kim Chung-ha, Kim Se-jeong, Jung Chae-yeon, Zhou Jieqiong, Kim So-hye, Yoo Yeon-jung, Choi Yoo-jung, Kang Mi-na, Kim Do-yeon and Jeon So-mi. They debuted on May 4, 2016.
They officially disbanded at the end of January 2017 and returned to their respective agencies.

Pre-debut: Produce 101 and "Crush"
In November 2015, Mnet announced their new survival show that would bring together 101 trainees from 46 entertainment companies to form a unit girl group with eleven members chosen by the viewers. The show premiered on January 21, 2016 and ended on April 1, 2016.

Prior to Produce 101, some of the members of I.O.I gained recognition after appearing on other television shows: Kim Se-jeong was a contestant on competition show K-pop Star 2 in 2012, Jeon Somi was a member of the 2015 reality survival show Sixteen, and Choi Yoojung appeared in the web drama To Be Continued.
In September 2015, Jung Chaeyeon debuted as a member of DIA but temporarily withdrew from the group to join Produce 101. She also had a cameo appearance in the 2015 web drama Sweet Temptation.

"Pick Me" is a song by contestants of Produce 101. It was released online as a digital single on December 17, 2015 by CJ E&M, along with a music video. The group was presented by Jang Keun-suk, and 98 out of 101 members showcased their talents through the song.
"Pick Me" debuted at number 45 on the Gaon Digital Chart, on the chart issue dated February 2-13, 2016, as a hot track. In its second week, the song climbed to number 24. In its third week, the song peaked at number 9. The song placed at number 53 for the 2016 year-end chart, with 893,723 downloads sold and 38,956,800 streams.

On April 1, 2016, the name of the group, I.O.I, and their final rankings were announced:

It was initially planned for the group to debut on April 1, 2016 with the song "Crush," which they performed as part of the finale of the show, but YMC Entertainment and Mnet decided to postpone the debut to better prepare the group's concept and choreography with a new song as I.O.I's debut single.

On April 3, 2016, a representative gave details of the plans for the debut of the group. Instead of releasing a digital single as initially planned, I.O.I would be releasing an EP with various songs. It was also reported that the group would have their own reality show on Mnet. On the same day, the members greeted the fans for the first time as I.O.I via their official Naver V app channel.

Debut with Chrysalis
I.O.I officially debuted on May 4, 2016 through the release of their first album, "Chrysalis", accompanied with a music video for the title track "Dream Girls". The song is a trap pop dance track co-written by Eru and Paul with rap lyrics written by members Lim Na-young and Choi Yoo-jung. On May 5, the group held their debut stage on Mnet's M Countdown, performing the title track and "Knock Knock Knock". On the same day, the group held their debut showcase and fan meeting at Jangchung Gymnasium in Seoul.

On May 10, they appeared on The Show performing both "When the Cherry Blossoms Fade" and "Dream Girls".

Due to conflict of interest, the group did not perform on the music shows of the three major Korean networks KBS, MBC, and SBS.

On May 20, the group made their first appearance on a non-cable television music show Music Bank. Its producer, Won Seung Yeon, stated that the group "is always a hot topic and does well in whatever they do" and that "there was no real reason to exclude them". Previously, the girls had also been excluded from being nominated on the three channels' music shows.

Chrysalis debuted at number 4 on the Gaon Album Chart while the title track "Dream Girls" debuted at number eight on the Gaon Digital Chart and rose to number 7 a week later. All the other tracks from the album also charted.
"Dream Girls" became the 7th most viewed K-Pop video in America and 4th worldwide in May.
The EP placed at number 38 on the Gaon Album Chart for the year-end 2016 with 74,554 physical copies sold.

"Whatta Man" and "Hand in Hand"
On June 10, 2016, YMC Entertainment revealed Lim Nayoung, Chungha, Zhou Jieqiong, Kim Sohye, Choi Yoojung, Kim Doyeon and Jeon So-mi as members of I.O.I's unit group, slated to promote the group's second album during the summer of 2016.

Jung Chaeyeon joined her MBK Entertainment group DIA for a comeback, and Kim Sejeong and Kang Mina were preparing for their debut as members of Jellyfish Entertainment's girl group Gugudan at the time.

On August 9, 2016, the sub-unit released a single titled "Whatta Man (Good Man)". The song was inspired by Linda Lyndell's "What a Man" and was produced by Ryan S. Jhun who also composed I.O.I's song "Crush".
The choreography for "Whatta Man" was arranged by member Chungha.

The single album was a commercial success peaking at number 2 on the Gaon Digital Chart and on the Gaon Album Chart, for its digital (downloads and streaming) and physical sales respectively. It has sold over 64,922 physical copies and 368,469 digital downloads as of September 2016. The single album sold 69,076 physical copies in 2016.

On August 15, 2016, I.O.I released the digital single "Hand in Hand", a remake of the Seoul 1988 Summer Olympics theme song originally sung by Koreana.

Miss Me?
On October 17, 2016, I.O.I released their extended play titled "Miss Me?". The title track, "Very Very Very", was written, composed and arranged by Park Jin-young, founder of Jeon So-mi's agency JYP Entertainment. With a rhythm of 206 bpm, the upbeat and energetic song is one of the fastest that Park has ever made. The group's special comeback show titled I Miss You Very Very Very Much Show was aired live through Mnet on October 16, 2016, followed by the release of Miss Me? and the title track's music video at midnight.

I.O.I received their first music program trophy as a whole group with "Very Very Very" on Show Champion on October 26.

The song was a commercial success topping the Gaon Digital Chart. It has sold over 423,491 downloads as of October 2016.

Last activities, final concert and disbandment

On November 5, 2016, YMC Entertainment confirmed that I.O.I would be disbanding on January 31, 2017. The group would still be actively promoting until the end of their contracts; including guest appearance on variety shows such as Immortal Songs: Singing the Legend, Yang and Nam Show and Knowing Bros.

From January 20 to 22, 2017, I.O.I held their final concert titled Time Slip – I.O.I. The three-day concert was held in Jangchung Gymnasium, where the group held their debut showcase.

I.O.I's unit group in December 2016
On January 10, 2017, it was revealed that I.O.I had received songs from various producers and songwriters as potential songs for their final release, including B1A4's Jinyoung. On January 17, YMC Entertainment announced that the group's final track before official disbandment would be "Downpour", written and co-produced by Seventeen's Woozi. The ballad was personally chosen and recorded by all eleven members of the group. The digital single and its music video was released the next day at midnight.

I.O.I's last schedule as a group was on January 25, 2017. They filmed a new CF for school uniform brand Elite along with boy group Pentagon.

The band officially disbanded on January 29, with the members' last television show appearance on MBC's Section TV and the fan cafe closing down on the 31st.

It was also announced on January 31 that I.O.I's song "Downpour" won Inkigayo's final January 2017 trophy with no live broadcast due to Lunar New Year's Day.

Planned reunion
On July 1, 2019, Studio Blu confirmed that the group would return in October 2019 with nine members, excluding Yoo Yeon-jung and Jeon So-mi. On September 6, the planned comeback was postponed to December. On October 29, the comeback got cancelled due to scheduling conflicts between the members and the ongoing Mnet vote manipulation investigation.

Thank you so much for all the requests last week! ♥
Just a small one this time, but with this week and recent events taken into consideration, you can probably guess who are up next, right?
Let me know what you think of this week.. Do you think we'll ever get a reunion? Favorite member? Song?

ioi walked so all the other audition groups can fly lbr.

i will forever be an unapologetic dream girls stan. i know everyone hates that song and thought it wasted their potential but it's so fun and the mv gave me a ton of into the new world nostalgia.

yoojung is forever my p101 center. i think i'm just a sucker for the shy kid who's incredible on stage and a ridiculous clown off-stage considering woojin was my pick for broduce lol. dodaeng is a cultural reset, i still can't get over how the staff straight up asked yoojung if she took a vocal position to avenge doyeon getting her chosen spot stolen lmao. and doyeon crying because yoojung couldn't adjust to being in such a strange, confronting environment at front ;a;;a;. their love for each other is so pure and they both deserve the world.

the only only thing that rubs me the wrong way about ioi is how 'fans' treated yeonjung and how the company basically caved to netizens bullying a 17 year old. thank fuck for wjsn tbh.

i also love dream girls!! like, it's weird and unpolished, but i LOVE weird and unpolished compared to the super-slick stuff that all sounds the same. i have such an affection for it. i loved the cute pink and blue aesthetic too.

I hated Dream Girls at the start, but it's a guilty pleasure of mine now. I think compared to their P101 tracks, Dream Girls felt like a step back. I do appreciate the fact that they tried to split centre among the other members though!

I was just thinking a few days ago about how awfully bullied Yeonjung was... It's been years but she was so young and I wouldn't be surprised if it was still affecting her. People were vicious :(

great coverage this week!! i considered myself a huge fan of ioi but i didn't even know about "hand in hand"...

there are some kpop fans from this generation who know the members of ioi but don't even know ioi existed. THAT is crazy to me. i mean, it was such a relatively brief moment in kpop history but a hugely impactful one.

the members promised they would reunite after 5 years and i hope they get to fulfill that promise despite mnet's fuckery. i really want them to reunite with ALL the members too. they truly are the ideal of idol... for such a short-lived group they had an amazing lineup and synergy.

my fav was always sohye. i can't help but root for an underdog. it was amazing to see her rise up on pd101 and i was so happy when she won. i guess she's happier being an actress now but i hope she will return to the stage one day.

IOI is a fascinating group for me as I like so many members but the group itself was a dud lol. Their only good main songs was Very Very Very and Downpour, and the mini ‘miss me?’ was really nice too. Whereas IZ*ONE has a better discography but I’m just not as interested in the girls of the group minus a few members. IOI felt so special to me since I liked the girls so much, maybe I’m biased since they were the first lol.

VVV’s stages were so addicting to watch, that’s probably where I fell for the girls and thought they were so cute. Nayoung is my bias, she charmed me lol. I’m glad the girls went on to some pretty awesome groups with great songs (though for some they struggle 😔)

I will say I really didn’t like their Whatta Man era, those girls were too young to be sexualized like that especially Somi. Through the course of pd101/IOI Somi being sexualized will always be uncomfortable to me

I have their mini playing now, ‘miss me?’ really delivered! Hold On, Ping Pong, More More? They’re so good ♥️

Thinking about Whatta man just makes me shiver. It was so creepy and uncomfortable...

Exactly, I don’t hate the song (because lbr the sampling of Whatta Man from Salt-n-Pepa saves it) but everything else that comes with it, I don’t revisit it much anymore. That’s probably why I liked Very Very Very much more, the girls actually wore outfits fitting their young age. They were mostly teens, I don’t need them wearing harnesses.

Oh I forgot this too - baby Twice and IOI! Lol this is so obnoxiously cute I can’t help but love it.

Also I forgot to add - Pick Me is fun, even though I find it kinda creepy in concept. Produce’s main theme songs or whatever they’re called are quite catchy, I actually listened to Wanna One’s a lot and IZ*ONE’s is really nice too. X1’s is the only one I don’t know, I completely skipped that one (I don’t watch any of these shows, but I still consume their songs/some media related to them)

i got into the group at Very Very Very then watched the show, honestly if they had the same contractual terms as Izone I can see they super successful, but wow we wouldve missed out on Weki Meki, Yeonjung in WJSN, Chungha. the girls wouldve been saved from Pristin, Gugudan DIA flopping and Somi not having a girl group to join

i didn't follow produce 101 nor i.o.i. when they were active, but i remember going to kcon with a friend to see other groups an di believe they opened the show. they started playing pick me and and my friend and i were dancing the hardest. i still love pick me! but the performance with all the contestants feels very male gazey to me

i love very very very too!

I was not expecting this so thank you OP for this pleasant surprise!

the concept of IOI was pretty fresh to me, like making a temporary group from a survival show. I loved the girls because I was invested in P101. although there were some girls whom I wanted but didn't make the cut, the group was great in itself! the friendships between the girls (99 line, Chungha's love for the everyone) are probably one of the main things that kept me rooting for them. as many above have said, IOI really paved the way for the future groups' success. while I'm forever bitter their popularity weren't capitalised on, at least they weren't worn out like Wanna One I feel.

Yeonjung and Sejeong are like main vocals every group could have dreamt of, with a good rapper in Yoojung. Yoojung and Chungha being great all rounders in vocals and dance. And having fun visuals like Chaeyeon Jieqiong and Doyeon. memorable moments were when IOI were in those group performances with Twice, RV and Gfriend, such wonderful times tbh.

My fave track from them is probably Crush, I was so obsessed with the song that I watched almost all their stage/live performances of it?? The bridge could have been better distributed instead of just Sejeong Yeonjung, but the song hypes me up man. Special mention goes to their Sugarman performance and the OT11 version of Whatta Man! also the IOI version of Flower, Wind, You is also great (much better than the DIA version)

the group at least still keeps in contact with each other, so that's great and I do hope they get the chance to perform again.

for next week, I can only think of AOA or ANS (but is ANS even big enough to have a post?)

ooh thanks! I thought since shit went down for these 2, they'll be gone.

Ah, Pristin/Hinapia will bring out a lot of feelings for people. and a great follow up to IOI's one

Hip always throws me off since I know it originally from this nugu group lol, I’ve worked out to it so many times so when it appeared on produce I was so confused lol

Seeing the subbed lyrics, I feel like IOI got multiple songs that wasn’t right for their age group. They had some older members but with multiple members being between 15-18, I find it kinda cringe even though I like the song.

I didn't know there was a 2014 version, it sounds better than the original one tbh. I googled and apparently there's a girl from P101 in this group also, who went on to Bulldok, what a ride.

yea Whatta Man and this were too sexualised for such a young group. But I guess it's because they didn't know how to fit the girls into a proper concept.

Date: 2020-08-30 06:34 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] lightframes.livejournal.com
This has nothing to do with I.O.I specifically but that's why I get annoyed that so many labels only seem to think girl group concepts can be "sexy" or "cute". Like there are SOOOO many things you can do with a group with a big age gap (fairy tales, athletics, DRAMA) that don't make the older members play younger or the younger members have to be sexy. Like I just want these labels to have some original ideas, please 😭

didnt really followed the entire s01 and just discovered the girls post-ioi. i only like downpour and whatta man in their entire discography haha (well because those were the only songs i know). i like this batch of produce because everyone has their own unique charms and everyone stands out tbh. ive been following iz*one since debut and i can only remember 5 girls.

im glad that the groups that they're in now are doing well (i think) but im rooting so much on weki meki and of course chungha.

Same 😬 they’re sweet girls but I can’t name each member like I can IOI. Violeta I finally made progress but I forgot again since I don’t follow them closely. I’m sure when they disband and do they’re own thing as solo artists/put in new groups I’ll learn whose who finally

their season of produce was the only one i watched from the beginning to the end (i hate all these competitive shows...) and i was very attached to the girls, not just the ones who debuted in ioi.

i'm still hoping for a reunion because their time together was so short and well...their potential was pretty much wasted as there was no clear concept for this group. i know i say this about a lot of ggs but they deserved better :((

i don't watch survival shows at all so i didn't get into ioi until after they debuted and i saw them at kcon 2016 and i completely fell for chungha! (can't believe it's already been four years since i became her fan 🥺)

when i saw ioi live, i only knew mina and sejeong and i was like "i'm never going to like their music" but i was jamming so hard to 'dream girls' and 'pick me' in the crowd, even my friends were like "suuure you don't like ioi" lmao

Why do all the Pick Me songs sound like nightmare fuel to me 😅 I don't know, they're just kind of unsettling.

I didn't care for most of their songs but I really like Very Very Very and I still listen to it. I feel morally opposed to the Produce shows so I don't watch them, but then we got so many great artists from I.O.I who I still like, so... it all worked out.

EDIT: Sorry, I didn't actually answer most of the questions 😂 I don't think we'll get a reunion at this point, and that's okay. Everyone is finding their success in their own way, and for me that's enough (and the goal really).

VVV is my favorite song and I think it's a good one for people who aren't already into K-pop. I played for a couple of friends a couple of years ago and they both really liked it.

My favorite member... ugh, this is hard! I can't really pick between Sejeong and Chungha, can I? They're both really different artists who give totally different performances. Sorry, I'm going to pick both. No gugudan, no life, but Chungha gave me WDYK, Roller Coaster and Gotta Go... I can't pick one!

I wanted to add I think Somi has a ton of potential. I think because she debuted so young it's easy to forget she's STILL really young and has a lot of time to improve. Confidence is something you naturally gain over time, and she's really getting better with each comeback.
