Date: 2020-07-16 08:00 pm (UTC)I definitely think there are logistics that need to be taken into account, but that would be no worse than the already established formula. And I definitely don't advocate for adding to the already hectic structure of idol promotions. It almost feels like too much at once (which feels worse now because back then they used to make you work for those dance practices and special performance videos, now they happen two hours after the video releases on youtube). Chungha has sort of done something in vein of what I am thinking: Stay Tonight and Play act as pre-releases and the only one she has performed is Play and it doesn't seem to be a long promo effort. After the official release, if she threw out one last single a month or so after the official release, that would be perfect. But that also is one that has her "starting" before the release and no investing in follow up after. The biggest issue I see is that some acts release at various points in the year. And everything sort of "restarts" on New Years. Eras in K pop would take a new life.
Just using TWICE as an example: Their first three singles (LOA Cheer Up and TT) could have just been on one album. Not saying they shouldn't have been singles, instead that musically they are so similar and the cohesion to them is almost scary/redundant. Flash forward to 2020: I think More and More (the album) could have gone further with a follow up around this time...especially since they ain't doing much else. Like I know that fans talk about how well it sold, but in a year nobody gonna be talking about that album because they did something else. Too many people put so much work in these albums and nobody listening to them but the fans and casuals within the k pop bubble. Like seriously, what is a legendary K pop album OUTSIDE of the context of the fandom? Who really got that kind of juice that people are living for? And of course this happens in all genres, and each have their own set of rules and standards. But with how much these companies want to make that coin and these idols want to integrate into bigger industry overall...you would think... The bag is being fumbled and I don't know why (I do but whatever).
Anyway this is more nuanced than that and I am talking too much.

Date: 2020-07-17 06:01 am (UTC)But the thing is kpop is such an fast food type of genre, I don't know if the kpop audience is formated for such release
And I feel like it mostly works for full album (imo) but can you imagine BP doing this... or idols that only release digital single

Date: 2020-07-17 07:12 pm (UTC)I think it contributed to their rise. For Example Fire was the title track and then Save Me was the promoted B-side. Or more famously I Need You was the title track of HYYH pt 1 and Dope was the follow-up. Arguably Dope was even more popular and pushed them further internationally than I Need You (which was on the other hand very popular in Korea), so imagine if it had just stayed an unpromoted B-side?

Date: 2020-07-16 06:23 pm (UTC)Adding to the follow up single discussion, I'd say it's something that more artists should do because it will encourage more interest in the album instead of having to wait for a repackage. Pre-releases also work in this regard and will also add to the hype if done properly. There are so many bsides that legit sound like title track material that get paid dust because the only time they're performed is at concerts or as intro tracks on music shows.
