Lol I love the monster face, and I like that they're doing different ones for the MV, dance videos, live stages etc.
But why oh why does the choreo have that mini bouncing in it, and so much of it too, who thought that looked good in any way?? Is kpop running out of dance moves??
I guess I need to properly see the dance in a dance practise to properly judge, it's just that every time they do the little jumps it zooms into their faces and you just see them shake weirdly which doesn't fit the vibe of the song for me lol
I've seen a lot of people saying they don't like it but I dig the nods to casting spells and posession. I wish it was weirder actually lol witchy rv is my fave rv
It looks less weird seeing it in full! I actually really like the full choreo, the little bouncing just looks so easily awkward if you mess it up even a little, the bigger movements are cool tho.
Also here I can see Irene at parts isn't as strong as Seulgi tho she def can dance
OP I think Irene's outfit would look better without the bow in front (and I love bows). The rest of it is really good, though. And her lip color >>>>>>
I didn't have the time to comment before about the song so I'll do it here.
The song grew on me, I like it. It's not as good as I wanted it to be, but I like it. And honestly I think with some changes it'd be a lot better? better transitions (in some parts there isn't even one, probs why it's that short?), changing that horn for smth else, Ik the subunit focuses more in the performance aspect, so ok there's not singing parts in these sections but that's why they needed more going on with the music, it just sounds empty/draggy.
I also wish they'd replaced the edm synth (?) too, like ok it's not that bad and I can see it being added for choreography's sake but it would have been so much better to have smth that created momentum for a dancebreak of sorts. Ah, and the bridge should've extended past sg's high note, thus reaching a climax. But idk a thing about making music so...
I really like how they sound, I love when people sing in their low register. Irene surprised me at her 0:59 and onwards part! And then seulgi omg yeees show us that emotion. That it's what psycho needed but lacked, I'm not into the lyrics but if they're gonna sing about feeling like psychos, at least show more emotion.
I agree the choreo has many er, awkward moments. Mainly the irene um drop? and the following walking around e/o and seulgi crounching, so uninspired. I would have much prefered they interacted more. like that part in sunny side up's bridge.
They do look amazing! would have prefered seulgi kept the dark hair, always the superior choice when it comes to her (and irene and joy). Also why did they change irene's heels? and for the very debut stage not less, She performs much better with lower ones and she was doing great with the previous ones.
Eh I'm of the opposite opinion. Both Psycho and Monster are built on bland instrumentation with not much melody going on (think SNSD The Boys or any Billie Eilish), but at least Psycho has the trademark RV harmony and vocal to do the heavylifting. There isn't much of that in Monster -- and I/S are playing it safe vocally by staying within two octaves. I kinda questioned SM's decision to make this the title track of the EP over Feel Good (much like Psycho over In and Out or La Rouge, which is terrific).
In that part of the comment I solely meant that in monster they're showing more emotion when singing their lines than in psycho. Mainly in the timestamps that I mentioned - oh, I just realised because of the intro the timestamps I put don't match with the parts of the song I intended. I meant irene 1:42 (it's more noticiable on the recorded song than in the live) and seulgi 1:47, sg showing more.
So yeah, I didn't mean more technical things like range or harmonies, etc. Those are obviously more complex on rv's songs.
I came to really like psycho, but I agree with you in that their vocals do the heavylifting.
Feel good it's the better song indeed, tbh I can see why it was chosen over both FG and naughty. It's more distinctive/memorable and calls for a stronger concept.
I saw a lot of comments about how psycho sounded too western/from the US and even named similar sounding songs, but i'm not from the us so that didn't happen to me and I guess that could apply to korean fans? It's smth different from what other kpop acts are doing and they have the vocals to pull if off. Also, maybe they thought it'd appeal to international fans? W/o going to the girl crush territory.
But oh, in & out it's so good! One of my all time faves from them. They also came tru with the vocals there! and yep, it sounds more complex than psycho.
after watching this all i can say is that this should have been a seulgi solo and that in rv performances she's really keeping it in, it's like the rest is holding her back from being the performer she could be, yikes.
100% agreed. I feel like she’s doing it in on purpose to not outshine the others but out of the two she was actually bringing some attitude and power to the meaning of the song like trying to match the message and everything. Irene can dance but she’s not really a performer
yeah she's definitely trying not to outshine the rest (though i'd say joy is usually doing pretty well, especially in red concepts), if she gave it her all they'd end up looking like backup dancers.
here she definitely let loose a bit since there's only two of them on stage, someone has to fill it and it sure as hell isn't going to be irene lol i know seulgi is universally loved but this is honestly the first time i'm seeing her for what she could be. maybe other people saw it before me, but either way i have fingers crossed for a solo.
Yeah, im hoping seulgi will get a solo, too. Joy has improved but to me it’s more in the singing department and she seems to enjoy performing, which is not as common as it should be for idols unfortunately, so that makes her look better in comparison but i still wouldn’t put her on the same level as seulgi. Seulgi actually tries to act out the concept of the song and emote plus she’s good at both singing and dancing
she seems to enjoy performing, which is not as common as it should be for idols unfortunately
it's so apparent now and exactly why so many 2gen fans compare new idols to those of days gone by. idols used to want to be on the stage and right now most of them are into the side gigs more than the main gig.
Yeah seriously. It’s like management and the trainee program itself beats the passion for performing out of them. 2nd gen idols definitely seemed to enjoy being on stage more. That’s why i still go back to watching after school, secret or sistar performances from time to time
same, i love watching old performances, my personal favourites are 2ne1, infinite and t-ara, though tbh 90% of them were better than what we're getting now. for example i never really enjoyed snsd's music much but i watch their performances sometimes anyway because they were just so good it's nice to see anyway.
speaking of trainee program i was watching a vlive of the txt kids (big hit new group, sorry i don't know if people here now them lmao) and they said that the predebut evaluations period was so intense that actual promotions now are easier to bear in comparison, literally 'ah this is hard but it's nothing compared to what we had to go through back then'. idol life is hard and big hit knows this obviously, there's never been a group in a higher demand than bts, but i still feel like breaking them like that before they even debut is too much. on the other hand the expectations were so high they didn't have the luxury of letting a bunch of kids have fun yada yada it's a mess
all the discourse around bts aside it's obvious that all of them love performing, which is their strongest point tbh. it's like companies forgot that it matters.
This entire song/concept would not work as a solo. And even as a Seulgi stan I can see that Irene has her own aura as performer, she's not powerful like Seulgi, but she has this cold "I'm above you" aura in this performance that matches the lyrics she's singing. The two make an interesting contrast.
Obviously they would have to alter it a bit for one person, but I stand by what I said. I don't see Irene's charisma, whatever type it might be. A matter of taste maybe
They look amazing! Irene is mesmerizing with the dark hair and red lips, and I like the red hair on Seulgi. I love the stage and peformance overall. The choreo could be better at some parts, but I'm happy as long as they're not working with Kyle Hanagami.
