On March 25, Pledis Entertainment revealed an official statement through their legal representative to announce that they had filed a lawsuit against former PRISTIN member Kyulkyung for a breach of contract.

Read a full translation of the statement under the cut:

Hello, this is lawyer Kim Moon Hee of law firm Jipyong, representing Kyulkyung’s agency Pledis Entertainment (hereafter Pledis).

On February 19, Pledis filed a lawsuit against Kyulkyung to the Seoul Central District Court to confirm the validity of her exclusive contract with the agency. Here is Pledis’s official statement.

1. Kyulkyung signed an exclusive contract with Pledis in 2015 and promoted as part of I.O.I, PRISTIN, and the unit group PRISTIN V. She entered the Chinese market and appeared as a fixed cast memeber on the first season of Jiangsu Television’s “Crazy Wardrobe” and on iQIYI’s variety show “Idol Producer” as a mentor. Pledis and her Chinese management company XCSS Entertainment have managed her activities in the Chinese entertainment industry by having her appear on ‘Idol Producer,” one of the turning points in her career, and Youku’s drama “Miss Truth.” We have provided her with all of the support she needed to grow into a great artist who is acknowledged in both Korea and China.

2. However, in early September of 2019, Kyulkyung unilaterally sent a baseless notice of termination via mail, email, and an instant messenger, and she is avoiding any communication with the employees of Pledis and XCSS Entertainment.

3. Since then, Kyulkyung has been excluding Pledis and independently appearing on dramas, variety shows, and advertisements in China and thus promoting in the entertainment field very actively while violating our exclusive contract. Therefore, we are in a position in which we must take legal action by taking measures such as a lawsuit to confirm the validity of our exclusive contract with Kyulkyung. XCSS Entertainment has already filed lawsuits in China requesting that she carry out the exclusive contract and to demand compensation.

4. For the duration of the exclusive contract, Pledis has provided all of the support we could to help her promote actively in Korea and China. It is unfortunate to have to share such news with fans and the public.

Although the situation leaves us with no choice but to take legal action, Pledis will continue to work hard to restore our trust with Kyulkyung, to reach an amicable agreement and end the dispute, and to speedily carry out activities for Kyulkyung in the entertainment field. Thank you.

I support you, Kyulkyung!

It's shit that Pledis have been holding onto her since September, when she wants out of the contract :/
On the other hand, i sure hope she has sth up her sleeves, bc just booking jobs by herself regardless of the contract has consequences.

Also, here's her statement:

Jieqiong's Statement

I do not wish to argue who's right or who's wrong. All I can do is just take every work opportunity seriously and do it well, work hard to improve and elevate myself, show everyone better works and not let those who trust me and love me down. pic.twitter.com/0E93OukMpI (https://t.co/0E93OukMpI)

Soompi's translation of it differs a bit. "I thought the two sides should solve it by themselves according to the law". That translation makes me feel like she left it up to XCSS Entertainment to hash it out with Pledis. Which could have been what screwed her over, depending on how XCSS handled it (ie if they were the ones to give her the ok to work).

I wonder how long her contract was slated for. This seems like it's going to backfire for her, I hope her the best though.

Seems to be the trend with Chinese idols in Korea. Indicate you quit, then do your own thing in China until the lawsuit is over lol

All the power to them though, cuz screw these companies.

Oh, what happened to her image in China?

There was a dating/sponsor rumor about her and Wang Sicong. Also some situation about a drama she was casted in. Its the comeback drama (after pregnancy) for A-list actress Zhao liying and Jieqiong was casted as supporting actress. ZLY hinted about script changes that she didnt like and the script changes seem to be about giving Jieqiongs role a bigger story at the expense of the original scripts quality. Also there is a story about how for a staff dinner, Jieqiong only arrived after ZLY left. But idk how much truth is in these things... anyways, ZLY is super popular, so a lot of people started disliking Jieqiong after these stories and her image took a dive.

there must be more to the story that we don't know about, since submitting a notice of contract termination and then going out to find work without your company would be a mind-bogglingly bad idea without some other reason for it.

that said, how can pledis claim that they did their best to promote her, after everything that happened (or didn't happen) with pristin? lol.

Considering the success rate of Chinese idols that sue their companies, I'm sure she'll be fine in the long run! I hope she has a good support system, though.

And the obligatory "Pledis sucks, people should run if they can".

If this is completely true she just screwed herself over. Given her statement, there seems to be an ounce of truth to what Pledis is saying (that she sent a termination notice), but it's obviously hard to say what went on from there that lead her to believe it was ok to continue work in China. I wonder though if she could prove that Pledis did not in fact help her get work, and that all her job opportunities came through XCSS Entertainment, if it would make a difference and help her in the lawsuit? Though I don't have faith that the court system will be on her side. I wish her the best.

XCSS is Pledis Chinese branch, so that arguement would probably not get her much

this does not sound promising, but then again it feels like the case will drag for pretty long considering most Chinese artistes that have lawsuits seem never ending in their cases. she's probably screwed in Korea already, and I would say bye to IOI promotions too?

we all know Pledis is trash at management, I mean just look at what they did with Pristin, but I think she should've gone about this a little more strategically than just ignoring them.

and she needs to stay away from Wang Sicong. The sponsorship rumor is a tough one to clean up, even if it's not true, it's always the young women who end up shamed with a scarlet letter for a long time.
