News anchor ignites debate on going braless

MBC's news anchor Lim Hyun-ju has ignited a debate about women going braless in public places that started after she appeared on live TV without a bra and spoke openly about it.

In the MBC program titled "Series M," which was aired on Thursday, Lim was shown preparing for a live television show without wearing a bra as a part of her participation in a "No Bra Day" challenge for the program.

Whether or not it is acceptable to go braless is one of the most contentious issues here in Korea. Some people claim wearing a bra is unhealthy for women as it puts undue pressure on the chest while others say it is simply inappropriate for a woman to go braless in public.

"I needed a bit of courage to participate in the challenge, because I felt strange without a bra at first. But I got used to it once I began shooting," Lim said.

She then said a lot of women want to go braless but are reluctant to do so because of social expectations.

"I feel sorry that there are still many people who don't feel comfortable when they see a woman who is not wearing a bra" Lim said.

When she shared the video clip of the show and her personal thoughts via her Instagram page after the challenge, many people left negative comments.

"Nobody really cares if you wear a bra or not. Why are you acting like such a child who only wants attention from others?" an online user commented on Lim's Instagram post. Another user also said "Did you necessarily have to host a live show without wearing a bra? I don't think it is an appropriate attitude for broadcasting a show."

However, there were also many people who cheered her on for her participation in the challenge.

"You should realize that your post encourages many women to enjoy being braless. I hope the social atmosphere will change soon so we can talk about this issue more comfortably," another person posted.

In a more recent post, Lim said she checked all the negative comments about her post.

"Sharing my thoughts and experiences through the challenge was pretty meaningful for me, considering the character of my job as a news presenter. I didn't jump to a conclusion as to whether going braless is good or bad, but it was a part of an experiment examining whether we, women should wear bras or not. Don't you think this has been a taboo that people don't want to discuss?" she said.

This is not the first time Lim has brought up issues related to women's right to choose what they wear by appearing on air with glasses in 2018. It was the first time in Korea that a female presenter had appeared on air wearing glasses despite male broadcasters frequently wearing them.

I absolutely hate bras. I’ve started only wearing sports bras/camisoles when I wear thinner shirts and forego them completely with sweaters. They’re just so uncomfortable for me. I didn’t used to feel this way though so I’m not sure what changed as I got older.

Bras are uncomfy af (even with those that don't have underwire), so yes, go bra-less or use nipple covers.

I've never particularly found bras to be uncomfortable tbh. I work out quite a bit so sports bras are my life. Sometimes I go braless tho if im like wearing a hoodie to like the grocery store or something benign like that, but that's just out of pure laziness
But i support anyone who wants to go braless, it aint da serious man

i've got a big chest so for me not wearing bras in public is more unconformtable than wearing them. but i can totally imagine people not wanting to wear them! let people wear what they want

i seem to be that 1% of the female population that actually dislikes NOT wearing a bra, i feel so uncomfortable - and i don't even have a [big] chest, but i have always wanted to try a no bra day, so maybe i'll give it a try soon

i'm so glad they have someone like her to stand up for these issues, just like she started wearing glasses. hope she can slowly start to normalize these kinds of things, she seems like a strong woman and i respect her for all she's trying

I don't have the luxury of choice, I'm large chested so it actually hurts to not wear a bra; wearing one is definitely the more comfortable option in my case, and I would never be able to be out in public without one on. More power to those that can, though. I'm pretty tired of this pearl clutching that happens when women dare to treat their bodies as something more than a tool for reproduction.

I've gone braless for a few months now and it's absolute bliss. Just need to use nipple covers; I hate the attention my chest gets with some miniscule temperature change.Some men really do act like they've never seen a titty or a nipple outline before.

I hate going braless outside. I always get cold nipples. I also hate that they're always stiff regardless of temperature, so no, I will not be going braless. I also don't find bra's that uncomfortable. I have fairly small breasts, average weight and well fitted bras so nothing is tight or pulling.
Regardless of all that, the bra goes off when I'm at home. pyjama time.

Summer time I rarely wear bras. They are just too much for me. And I have really small breasts so I just need some nipple covers and I'm good to go.

I go braless all the time 😊 but I recognize I have privilege though - I have cute small perky breasts, they stay high so I don’t need support and they never get in the way lol. I only do nipple covers or bralettes if I have a outfit/top that could get me in trouble for public indecency, which is bs in itself. But I support every woman to choose what works for them, so they want to go braless - I’m with you sister lol

Weirdly enough I barely view sports bras as bras since they wear more comfortable than regular bras, and I usually wear them as tops for working out lol

I only wear bras when I leave my house. I feel weird going braless in public.
But nobody should judge a woman if she wears one or not, life for women is already hard enough.
