A Korean version of the U.S. Billboard charts will be unveiled later this month.

The Korea Music Content Industry Association announced on last week's Thursday that it will launch the “Gaon Chart” on February 23rd.

The chart will tabulate the relative weekly popularity of songs or albums in the nation. “Gaon” is a Korean word that means “middle.”

Six online music services, including Melon, will take part in tabulating online sales of music, while leading record distribution companies, including Sony Music and Mnet Media, will participate in calculating overall album sales.

Finally!

ETA: I'm slightly worried about that "leading record distribution companies" part though as that might mean if an artist wants to distribute using some other company than those leading ones (or even setup a company of his/her own) he/she won't get listed, right?

lol. I remember Japan has one too, but they rather use oricon.

What would be Korea's oricon? Hanteo?

hanteo only uses physical sales from hanteo affiliated stores and digital sales from hanteo.com. I am not sure if oricon is the same.

I think oricon is largely similar because for the longest time, jpop sales on yesasia didn't count towards oricon sales.

hmmm mnet huh lol

I think this will only be useful to industry people unless they have different versions of the billboard chart like hot 100 etc...

all their charts calculate number 1 in a different way
