MAMAMOO’s Hwasa Talks About How She Overcomes Anxiety

In a recent interview and pictorial for Cosmopolitan Korea magazine, MAMAMOO’s Hwasa opened up about occasionally experiencing feelings of anxiety.

The singer, who will be gracing the cover of the magazine’s August issue, shared that she was excited for her photo shoot. She explained, “When I pose for a pictorial, I’m able to have more fun and enjoy the experience more than I do when I’m posing for an album cover or filming a music video. So I’m extremely excited.”

Hwasa went on to reveal that even though she was happy with her life and career, she sometimes dealt with inexplicable anxiety. “Although I’ve achieved my dream from childhood, there are times when I struggle with a shapeless anxiety,” she shared.

“When I experience those kinds of feelings,” she continued, “I write lyrics or conceive a performance in my head. I get extremely excited and happy when I dream up performances and ask myself, ‘What kind of concept would work well for singing this song?'”

MAMAMOO’s Hwasa filled the airwaves with fun stories on SBS PowerFM’s “Cultwo Show.”

On the July 9 broadcast, the girl group member appeared as a special DJ.

DJ Kim Tae Kyun began, “I saw Hwasa a lot through MBC’s ‘I Live Alone.’ You eat tripe really well and are carefree.” Hwasa replied, “In real life, my personality is more quiet than carefree. My voice is usually quiet so I worried a lot. I’ll work hard to host the radio with a loud voice today.”

In February, Hwasa released her first song as a solo artist. Speaking about future solo promotions, she revealed, “I’m currently working hard to prepare a solo track after ‘Twit.'”

She also got candid about her romantic relationships. “I pour out expressions when dating,” said Hwasa. “That’s how much I express myself. I don’t know how to play hard to get.”

The MAMAMOO member also said, “Because I look exotic, many people mistake me for a foreigner. When I go overseas, people ask me for directions but I don’t know how to speak any English.”

nah mamamoo did blackface once and then painted themselves darker again to mock homeless people which also had colorist implications. they had a good english apology to appease their international fans but were very vague in to their korean fans because they only cared about upsetting the foreign fans. like stan them all you want idc but don't gloss over that. ia that people don't hold boy groups to the same standards but mamamoo aren't your regular problematic group lol

is there a video of them apologizing? not saying it didn't happen but i know fans, especially fan translators love to lie about this stuff. one famous mmm translator on twitter admitted that she'd always omit the racist things mmm said to protect their image.

kpop fans always pick and choose which groups they hold accountable and what they find offensive tbf. i was a big mamamoo fan up until the blackface incident and then i just couldn't do it anymore, especially with how insincere their written korean statement was. i feel like many people on omona liked them prior to this tho, but you're right people do use mmm to feel morally superior when they turn a blind eye to other groups esp on twitter. just shows that many fans don't actually care about the racism.

There were fancams (at the time I was co-modding a mamamoo tumblr and people kept sending us the videos but that's when we decide to go on hiatus because the situation didn't sit well with the several of us)
I don't know if they're still up because it has been 2 (3?) years but I guess some fans still have it around

One issue I have is that when issue are adressed or clear out people don't care

It's super disappointing that cosmo does these video covers but then photoshops the fuck out of the still version perpetuating the perfect body bullshit. like we can see her abs aren't that defined even with the pose (she looks great regardless). just...smh cosmo will cosmo.

I'm absolutely loving this shoot and I also love the fact that she's confident about her body and trying to promote body positivity because we really need more idols who try to encourage people to embrace their body types and not try to box themselves into the rigid beauty ideals.


Hyosung from Secret has been my body goals for so long but over time she's gotten skinnier. It's tough to find any kind of idol that actually has a healthy body type and is more on the thicker side. Some of the women that I see being praised for having hot bodies are barely that much bigger, if at all. It shows that we're still praising women for looking frail and thin when they aren't even that way naturally and instead of helping them accept themselves and live a healthy lifestyle, all people want to know in interviews is what diet they're on and how dedicated they are to losing weight. Because god forbid a woman not being a size 0 or being naturally slender.
