There is a rumor that former Buzz member Min Kyung-hoon (26) weighed about 100kg during his two years of silence in the Korean pop scene. However, he seems to be thinner than before.
Min said, “I drank Soju (a distilled beverage native to Korea) everyday after I quit my previous agency from August to December 2008. I gained about 30 kg and then weighed about 90kg. One day, I was ashamed of myself while I was talking with my parents on the phone. Since last January, I have worked out strenuously along with eating a sweet potato once a day, and now I weigh 65 kg at a height of 180 cm.”
Min had a difficult time until he made a contract with IS Entertainment last March. The Korean pop music group Buzz was formed in 2003, but officially went on hiatus due to the members’ mandatory military service in 2007. In 2007, Min was active as a solo singer, but he did not receive a favorable responses. Min was thinking about going into another line of work while he looked for a new management agency.
Min said, “It was not easy to try another job because I was a public figure. During the period, I neither listened to music nor sang songs. However, I fully realized the value and importance of music after my wandering. I desperately wanted to sing a song in front of my fans.”
Min has passionately prepared his new album. During his Buzz days, he seemed to be unmotivated even when he was singing songs and he was shy when it came to talking with people. However, he seems to have changed -- he looks more active and makes eye contact well.
Min said, “When I look back upon my past, I realize I should have prepared myself more while I was debuting. During the making of this album, I received vocal training for the first time and I did my best when recording the songs. I realized my hidden talents through the process. I regret my past, knowing that I could have made better albums if I did my best earlier.”
Many famous songwriters such as Cho Young-su, Kim Do-hoon, Hwang Sung-jae, Ahn Young-min, and Lee Jae-hak, and hit lyric writers such as Kang Eun-kyung and Yoon Sara took part in Min’s comeback album. Min was cheered by the support of the top Korean songwriters.
The songs in his new album are generally ballads even though the songs have different styles. The title song, composed by Cho Young-su, is as an extension of hit songs by Buzz, and Min’s unique voice is accompanied by an emotional melody.
Meanwhile, Lee Jae-hak’s “Just…tear,” which Min directly asked Lee to write, is a little peculiar: the melancholy melody and aquatic musical instruments harmonize with Min’s falsetto. Min said, “My singing style has specific features of retro-style vibrating sound. In the title song, my style was well-expressed and in other songs, my style was changed into a refined one."
Min says that he misses his Buzz days. He also says he cried a lot while he was watching a concert scene in the movie “Happy life.” Min said, “I cried involuntarily. Our members made a promise to reunite our group again at the time we split up. Our members have good relationships, contrary to what people think. All of the group members were discharged upon completing their military service, and I talked with Ye-jun on the phone.”
He thinks he needs to succeed by himself in order to reunite the group. Min says he is very glad he became a singer and that it had clearly been his goal. Min said, ”I hope to win first place. I want people to love to sing my songs during karaoke, instead of just ranking number one on music charts or pop programs. I also hope that I will have more male fans.”
