Grace (of Unpretty Rapstar & this excellent song fame) uploaded a new Youtube video, where she talks to her good friend Alex Reid (ex-Rania) about joining Rania, dating male idols, the truth behind her departure & racism in the industry.

This is definitely worth watching, gives some insight into the madness of Rania and how the whole experience was for Alex.

Just watched. It’s so messed up how they kept her in the dark about a lot of things. Sure, she wasn’t fluent in korean which contributed to that but the company expressed their interest in her first, so they should have been prepared for a foreign idol with a translator or something. It’s probably worse in smaller companies though whereas in SM you even get formal language classes. Also that cab incident was messed up but i’m glad that her workplace wasn’t full of stress from racism

I didn’t know about the managers going to the bathroom with you. That just seems like overkill. She did say there were boygroups that could hang around the dressing rooms without their managers, so i wonder if there were also girl groups like that too or are GGs generally kept on a tighter leash than BGs?

The lack of creative control and power was not surprising at all and even though it’s still not great it makes me happy that the American industry has changed so much since the days of Nsync and Britney. Hopefully korea can move in that direction soon

Also with that comment about not being talented in anything is just prejudice. Sure, there are a lot of idols who were only chosen for their looks but there also seems to be a growing amount of aspiring artists and songwriters as well as actors that are going through the audition system because there doesn’t seem to be another way to get into the entertainment industry with guaranteed exposure and attention from the public unless you’re ok with being more underground and indie in music style

i would understand why gg had to have their managers with them in toilets since theres that huuuuge hidden camera scandal going around. they shouldnt have to but its a bandaid for a bigger issue

Nah. No, thanks to a company watching my every move especially a company that keeps you in the dark about if you will even be included in the group’s comeback and if you are even an actual member in the group. Male idols will always find other ways to be creepy like going into DMs, at ending stages at music shows, festivals, award shows where male and female groups are all together and even when dating and taking non consensual sex videos. How about the managers go with their male idols to make sure they’re not installing cameras in the bathrooms or being creepy to someone?

I'm pretty sure mangers go with some male idols as well, but it's all about seniority (and maybe success too), the older the group the more freedom they get. It's the same for the GGs, some can't even have cellphones when they debut, but they get more freedom the older they get.

We don’t really know the reason why the managers are going into the bathroom with them though and i doubt they really care about the idols’ safety especially rania since alex said they were treated like property. They didn't even let her know that practically all of her members were leaving the group and new members were joining and she had to find out for herself. Such a caring company lol. I wouldn’t think being constantly under surveillance was for “my own good” even if there is a risk of hidden cameras, which happens all over the world anyway like the recent case at the james bond set. Plus you also sometimes go to the bathroom to take a breather or for some short alone time, so basically when they’re at work it seems like they always have to be “on” and be aware that there are other people around watching their every move. this is just giving a benefit to the doubt to companies when we’ve seen how often idols file lawsuits against them

I remember there was some blind item or anonymous retelling of female managers that went in the bathroom to make sure the girls were having their periods (and not pregnant). I can't remember the rest of the info from that post/article, but that stuck out to me.

Such a good and interesting video! Agree with above, Grazy Grace is always so good at interviewing people and it’s so natural. Hope Alex’s book comes out soon as I definitely wanna read it. Glad she cleared up too that she didn’t get kicked out bc I definitely thought that was the case.

Just looking at some of those reaction videos for Music Core (when the artist reacts to their performance and the next artist comes out right after), she was promoting along with cross gene, beatwin,sf9, vromance, vav, nct dream, ravi, pentagon, nct127, up10tion, seventeen, and monsta x. And that's just me skimming the artist list for this one show. I remember people making a big deal out of her saying something about liking(?) Bang Youngguk, then he ended up following her on Instagram and fans shipping heart went wild.

We'll just have wait for some kind of tell all because I have no idea.

Great interview! I can’t wait to read her book. I hope her book goes further into how her company basically wanted to use her as a gimmick

I am curious who she went out with lol and this answered if she kept up with Rania or was still friends with anyone in the group, which is no lol. But she had no ill will and was really understanding, I think she’s really likable. The blue eyeliner is cute too!
