tvN’s newest weekend drama “Arthdal Chronicles,” which premiered on June 1, became this week’s most buzzworthy drama. The drama raised the public’s anticipation even before its premiere by announcing the star-studded lineup of actors that features Jang Dong Gun, Song Joong Ki, Kim Ok Bin, and Kim Ji Won. Song Joong Ki also entered the list of most buzzworthy actors at No. 1. Jang Dong Gun placed No. 8 on the same list, followed by Kim Ji Won in ninth place.

First impressions of the show? Seems like the ratings for the first ep were quite high (6-sth-percent for a cable drama).

cut and paste of my Dramabeans comment, people over there are already pissing me off so I might stop reading the comments there

1st episode

I really liked it, sometimes it takes a few episodes for me to become hooked on a drama but this had me by 40 minutes in.

I think what I enjoyed the most was the twisting of our expectations of who were the villains and the victims. In the 2nd scene we assume the humans are being attacked by a monster, then later on we find out that the humans committed genocide against the Neantals in order to steal their fertile lands. The way the dream manifested was another cool thing. I’m enjoying the world building. Young Tagon seemed like a psychopath. I’m assuming the two Igt babies are twins. Since Asahon is the mother and Ragaz is the father. I don’t understand why Asahon didn’t take the two Neanthal kids with her to cliff. I feel like she left them to die.Ok maybe Tagon isn’t a psycho but I did find his smile creepy.
One thing I didn't like was the two time skips in one episode, it made the timeline confusing. I also would have liked to see Ragaz and Asahon as a couple.

2nd episode

Kinda disappointed that some of the actors I liked in the first episode are not returning. This episode gets right into the story. The horse is my new favorite character, the faces it was making were so funny. The major conflicts of the drama have now been set up and I'm dying to see what happens.

what were the DB commentators saying?

I haven't watched yet, but I look forward to updates. For something like this, I want to see what people say as episodes progress.

People saying it was a ripoff of Game of thrones when it’s not even the same time period, fantasy elements and definitely not the same story line.

I trust the writer so I didn’t hesitate to watch even though the cast posters were stupid. Dramas in general have a lot of bad posters that have nothing to do with the plot.

hmmm. I mean, GoT looks pretty clearly grounded in the European middle ages to me, with more religious variation, and the dumb posters for this looked NOT European. Plus, I had the impression this was more like 'cradle of civilization' time period than 'dark ages after fall of great civilization'. In other words, I'm inclined to be on your side.

I admit I haven't see the writer's projects, though I know Queen S. is supposedly amazing. Circle I made it half way through, but then it all seemed too dramatic. I look forward to seeing what you think after future episodes. Ta!

Good to know there's a Dramabeans recap up, I need to go read it to make sure I know what's going on lol.

I agree with you on the time skip thing, I looked away for a second and missed the first one and was thinking the babies were the original babies they saved and was so confused, I had to rewind to figure out what was going on. I am bummed we missed out on any type of love story with Ragaz and Asa Hon. I know this episode was just set up but it could have fleshed out so many things.

I really enjoyed the first two episodes, despite not really knowing what's happening. I think the world building was a lot to take in but they did a pretty good job with it. I wish we could have spent more time on the backstory characters, but I understand that it's just the setup to the main story.

So far I'm liking both Song Joong Ki and Kim Ji Won and think they play well off each other. I love Kim Ok Bin but her character seems way too modern and almost cutesy to me? I'm used to her being a badass lady in things I've watched her in and was expecting that for this as well. I know we've only seen her for like 5 minutes so I'm hoping it gets better as we go. One thing that did crack me up was the 10 year time jump going from ONE to Jang Dong Gun when all of the other Saram warrior guys look the exact same.

Really looking forward to this weekend's episodes!
