The 72nd edition of the Cannes Film Festival wrapped with jury president Alejandro González Iñárritu announcing the group’s unanimous decision to award the Palme d’Or to South Korean director Bong Joon-ho for his sly, politically charged “Parasite.” Following last year’s win for humanistic Japanese drama “Shoplifters,” the well-reviewed Asian thriller represents the yin to that film’s yang: the story of a lower-class family who try to improve their social situation by infiltrating a rich household.

Explaining the group’s collective enthusiasm for “Parasite” at the post-ceremony press conference, Iñárritu said, “We all shared the mystery of the unexpected way this film took us through different genres and spoke in a funny, humorous, tender way — with no judgment — of something so relevant and urgent, so global in such a local film, with such a beautiful efficiency of media, and an understanding of what film really is. We were all fascinated when we saw it, and it kept growing and growing: that’s why it was a unanimous decision.”

He is the first Korean director to win the prize. Not subbed, but here's a vid of the director and one of the film's stars, Song Kangho, right after the win.

YES! I'm so happy about this!! Haven't seen Parasite yet (probably will next week) but I ADORE most of his previous works. 'The Host' remains one of my all time favorite movie. Bong Joon-Ho is an amazing director and korean cinema in general deserves more international recognition (ngl, I'm still bitter 'Burning' didn't win any official award last year in Cannes).

I rewatched The Host a few weeks ago. 13 years later and it still holds up really well.

I want to see this so much. Bong Joon ho (one of my favorite directors) made a movie with Song Kang ho, Lee Sun-kyun, Choi woo shik (I love each one of them). Plus the mom from every drama ever and Park so dam. He is just such an amazing director and the trailer looks amazing.

also I'm here for back to back Asian directors winning! Still think Koreeda should have won back with like father like son tho

I can't wait to see it!! I love all of his previous work, Memories of murder is definitely one of my favourites movies of all time. A very political director, I love that. I'm mad I'm not going to be able to see it here in Spain on cinemas tho :(

This comment comes in so late but I just need to put that somewhere!!!!
I just came back home from seeing ‘Parasite’ and damn, it’s such a RIDE. I’m still reeling. The movie is amazing. It’s funny and bitter and thrilling in the most cruel yet melancholic way. Directing is mind blowing from the first to the last scene. Acting is on point. Bong Joon-Ho is at the top of his craft. A true masterpiece. Not gonna spoil anything. Just go see it when/if you get the chance!!
