On the 18th, Stray Kids' subunit 3RACHA consisting of leader Bang Chan, Changbin and Han performed their new track titled 'Zone' on Mcountdown. Fans noticed Chan's hairstyle, started questioning whether it was his choice or stylist's choice and demanded an explanation. Some argued that Chan should have known he shouldn't have done it because he's an English speaker and grew up in Australia.

Two days later, on the 20th, Bang Chan held a Vlive with a fellow member Jongin. Fans took this chance to demand an apology and flooded the comment section with comments asking him to explain his choice and apologize. You can watch the video below:

if he wants them to take off imo jyp needs to give them a memorable aesthetic identity and stop letting the members handle so much of the production bc yay idols self-producing and all, but they need help

lmao it just looks SO bad
i'd be surprised if he apologises or even acknowledges it because australians literally Do Not Give A Shit about appropriation

So I don't keep up with Stray Kids that much but a lot of The Boyz fans like them so this drama came up on my tline and bruh, more than the group, it seems like their i-fanbase really showed their asses with this whole mess. The amount of Black stays I've seen get shouted over about this is disgraceful.

Bambam did apologise even though it was in the comment section, which bring us back to JYPE and how they probably tried to stifle it aka their usual MO.

So did he respond to any of the comments on the vlive?

This kinda shit has happened so many times in the kpop industry so far that i genuinely doubt that there's anyone left who doesn't know that it's problematic.

it's like when celebrities use blackface as part of their halloween costume. There's scandals every year about it.... clearly they're just looking for attention

Don't care for the group tbh, but I'm glad that their fans are not covering for him. or trying to deflect blame.
Hold him accountable. He's not a child, and if he didn't know he can learn.

I mean, from going that questionable hair during My Pace...
I feel like this is only the natural progression.

Not surprised, nor disappointed (you can't be a Kpop fan for this long and have expectations tbh.)
I'm more interested how he goes forward and will fans handle this.

Being that both parties know he's in the wrong.

I don't think he'll learn from this going forward...without a spanking :D

I almost had to LOL when I came to the part about "He should know better,,, he's Australian." We all know that's giving Australia waaayyyy too much fucking credit. It's like when BlackPink does appropriating stufff and peopole expect more from Rose. Y'all save your breath, that island is beautiful but a cultural cesspool lbr.

Another performance recently he had like the side cornrow and it looked dumb af too. Too bad cuz he's actually talented.

Did anyone see that one fan who is Greek and German saying she was mixed and that she had a right to comment about this cause her dad was ‘dark’ and had an ‘accent’? I was D Y I N G at the caucasity and just how stupid some fans are.

She kept making Lives on tiktok and crying saying we shouldn’t guess what race she was when people told her she was white lmao she supposedly studied cosmetology but kept saying this hairstyle were dreads lmao

This whole thing was killing me! I was just watching her dance covers and then the next thing I know she’s saying to a live audience that we need to check our privilege because her dad is Greek and dark skinned. My black ass was staring into the camera like I was on the office.

Bad choice mate

He prob won't apologize directly (or be able to) but I do hope we don't see it again and we can get at least a subtle acknowledgement that its messed up

I just wish that companies/k-idols understood that you don’t have to have braids, dreads, twists, etc. in order to do hip-hop or rap music. Because the hairstyle is always tied with the assumption that the idol has to adopt this “hardcore hip-hop” persona. It’s annoying, looks embarrassing and extremely inauthentic, and it’s not the purpose of those hairstyles in the first place.

Date: 2019-04-21 06:19 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] existingisfunny.livejournal.com
yeah, cuz i'd almost be lenient if these types of hairstyles were used all across the board. like it never crosses their mind to have girls in boxed braids when it's a cute innocent concept or boys with locs when it's a school boy concept. only when they're tryna be hard do they decide they need black hairstyles lmao so it rly shows how they see black attributes and what we're allowed to be

i wouldn't even care about an apology from him cuz i know he's a newer idol, not with a heavy track record (like if this was zico for 50th time), i would just want them to be immediately removed, a simple statement as to why and that would be good enough but the more fans try to defend him and think he needs defending from the big bad scary black fans, the more i'm like fuck it. make more noise!

Really agree with your first point and I feel that's the major point that goes against the "They're not appropriating, they're appreciating!" point. Like how Hyprin only busted out the cornrows for her rapper phase and left them for her summery-sexy tracks, same way these dudes only use Black hairstyles when it's to look badass or tough or "swag". You don't see them using them for summer or bright concepts and that shows there's stereotyping in play

Oh yea I totally forgot about Hyolyn’s weird rap phase prob because when she was on the show I never watched, and I agree

Exactly, like it wouldn't be AS much of a problem if it hadn't clearly just been done for their rapline perf, cos his hair had been taken out and styled differently for the other song perfs that day.

I was rooting for them.
They had the best rapline in this generation. Their danceline is great too. Silence the mics of their vocal line.
And for the Australian dude to do it too is peak racist BS.
Ugh.

I was disappointed but not surprised, as usual. We were all asking for him to apologise and just acknowledge on the comments for the 3racha perf. Then I saw someone asked him about it at a fansign and he said he'd do a vlive, but it seems it wasn't brought up at all on there so... People were getting banned from the chat for asking.

He's my skz bias so it's even more annoying to see other stans of his defending him or shouting ppl down over it, or flooding 'WE STILL LOVE YOU CHAN IT DOESN'T MATTER' over everything. Like, it DOES matter...ajhsd it was a v stressful time on twt when this happened...I saw people were even bringing up GD's past hair as some kind of 'gotcha' comeback??

IDK how much freedom they have to talk about this stuff on live's, but considering JYP was fine with forcing Tzuyu to make that awful apology video (that looked like a hostage situation ffs) over a nothing 'scandal', I'm gonna say they just wanna ignore this stuff and keep quiet.
