In this thirty minute interview, Rosé and Jennie do most of the talking and discuss:
- What Coachella feels like
- Road to debut for everyone (Rosé's dad made her audition)
- From 16:15: discussion of several singles and the KTL EP; how Teddy produces their music
- 25:00: how everyone elses solo projects are coming together (spoilers: they ain't)
- 28:00: covers on the new tour (Zach knooooows); if they would be open to producing their own stuff

Zach Sang Show

A cute interview with some nice anecdotes. They couldn't really answer questions about the creative process behind their music though, which I thought was a little painful but that's the truth of Kpop lmao

they're cute but yeah the questions about their music process just made it more obvious they have no input in that

Interviews like this shows so clearly how big the difference is between their onstage and offstage persona, especially with Jennie. They're so quiet like they're afraid to make too much noise, they should just embrace their powerful confident image that they have, or if you don't have it, you know, fake it 'till you make it lol. But it's not necessarily bad to be quiet and I think it's also just inexperienced at interviews. A lot of the answers seemed like they didn't know how to answer and don't know how to think on the spot (like even if you don't have an actual answer just make one up, no one will know lol). Rose was really great bc she spoke most of the time. Lisa is much better at English than I knew. Jisoo seems very shy tho idt she really is? I think even if she didn't know English she should've just spoken in Korean and have someone else translate. The interviewer had good questions and did well on moderating the interview.

I think it's the language barrier? because Jisoo seems quicker to answer it's in Korean. I think they're also a lot more relaxed/chill in real life than on stage, and the few Zach Sang's interviews I've watched were all really chill as well, on top of the usual kpop training

I've seen a few Zach Sang interviews since Tiffany went on it, and I really like his style. It's always really chill and insightful, and his team seems to do a lot of research beforehand. I like how Zach moved to Lisa and Jisoo to include them, even if it was short. I hope more groups with English speakers will visit him when performing in the US.
Btw Lisa is so cute!!! I wish she would talk a little more, she's good at English. At least Jennie is talking more here than on other US interviews I saw of them, they're getting there :)
Also I'm taking from it that Jaden Smith is really serious about enjoying kpop, it's nice :)

Think this basically confirms that they have little to no input in their music, which isn't their fault and its a damn shame

Aside from that, this was a nice interview to listen to. Lisa's english has gotten so much better, i'm sure she'll improve even more. I want to hear more of their day to day stories.

I love Zach Sang and his interviews. He's incredibly insightful and well researched—most interviewers need to take notes. That and the environment is so chill and relaxing.

It pained me to see them being so hesitant to answer the questions regarding the creative process. If anything, one of them could have just spouted off some nonsense and none of us would have been the wiser. Also, it's interesting to learn that they do a bunch of their demos in English and then mesh together the best bits. I wouldn't be entirely surprised if YG ends up tossing out English versions of their singles to delay having to put out new material in the near future.

Rose is like the Tiffany of the group, she's so good at doing english interviews and doesn't make it boring.

Lisa's english is so gooooooood, but actually most thai kpop idols speak really good english.

Jennie's face at 23:00 when the hosts ask her about the writing process, lmaooo

i don't know i feel like there are a lot more idols these days that give some creative input even if it's just writing lyrics for one song or coming up with a dance move. for example, sunmi participated in writing every song in her latest mini-album and its direction, and billboard did an awesome interview with her about her creative process. blackpink seems to be one of the kpop groups that has the least input in their music, which is a big contrast to their image on stage and in songs

i think a lot of it for sunmi is bc she's a solo, have been debuted for a long time. i think there's really isn't a lot of gg especially that's given opportunity to be involved in their creative process. i can only think of gidle (is that how you write it?) and mamamoo.

wonder girls also got more control over their music later in their career. it started with a couple of songs at first and then when they started playing instruments they were able to write even more songs. they had to stand up for themselves and argue with jyp though, and he even got in his feelings about it lmao. i think brown eyed girls also help in writing their own music. i know some twice members wrote lyrics for their songs and red velvet have also been writing more lyrics lately. LE from Exid also has some songwriting credits. subin from dal shabet is also a songwriter.

right. i think most of them have to either have seniority or like the gidle member, already established as a writer/musician. most companies (and their male fans) just want gg to be cute. that's why they weren't given as many opportunity as male idols. and eventhough yg market BP and even 2ne1 as strong female group (more on 2ne1 tbh, i dont feel like YG's going 100% on this for BP), they're still not given a lot of chance.

cosmic girls though debuted in the same year as blackpink and they have a more girly image yet their member Exy writes and composes songs for their albums. you can still compose and be cute too. I think a lot of it has to do with YG and how super controlling he is of blackpink. he won't even let them eat lunch in the cafeteria when ikon or winner is there. hopefully though they'll get to start writing or composing sometime in the future though. i think for 2ne1 it also took a while until YG let them write songs for their albums

that's true about yg controlling. Even for 2ne1, it's only CL, and it's just for the lyrics. when i think people said she wanted to do more. and when i said most gg, i was mostly think of the ones that i kinda know (bc they're popular lol) like RV, Twice, GF.

yeah it seems that the girl groups that are the most popular get the least input in their music unfortunately. writing lyrics though is at least something creative and would be a good start for blackpink to become more involved. maybe this expansion into the US will make YG realize that the US actually loves when someone is a singer-songwriter and they will start to encourage it in blackpink. also i almost forgot but pristin got to participate in composing most of their songs on their debut album. i really hope they'll get to comeback eventually and pledis won't stuff them in the basement especially since they did pretty well in sales.

it's cool for pristine.
and i dont really believe this, but probably it's bc the stakes are bigger from the popular ones. even if they let them have creative input, it's never for title songs.

i'm not sure about korea but i feel like in the US that's the rule for most pop singers though. their label wants the title track to be the most public and radio friendly so they'll have them work with a producer that's trendy right now or something like that while they are allowed to take more risks on the b-sides, so artists can be more involved then. even bts said it themselves that it still comes down to will their team approve the songs they came up with and allow them to be on the album or not. although i don't know maybe they're able to discuss it with their team and convince them to allow the songs on the album but from what i gathered they meant their management had the final say
