the review really captured everything how i feel about the record. the music is dated and seems more like a marketing ploy to promote them for the coachella performance.
at first i was a little disappointed that the author focuses less on the music and more about how blackpink's image is manufactured and almost "robotic." but tbh if you aren't a kpop fan and are just now being exposed to blackpink, it kind of does feel like they're robots? they've just never come off as girls who have any control in their music, and tbh almost all kpop performances are robotic if you think about it.
anyway, i dont know why i'm talking so much about this lol, its just always interesting to see more and more music outlets critically review kpop. its funny how so many stans are coming for the article when a 6.2 isn't that bad by pitchfork standards..i mean they just gave khalid a 4.2 for his latest album lol.
really interested to see what they'll give the new bts
yeah i saw a lot of people on twitter saying that too... tbh after listening through it i didn't think it was horrible, it's just average, which is disappointing considering it's their first release on an American label. but the music itself isn't atrocious (aside from KTL) so a 6.2 made sense to me in that case
I don't watch reactions too often but I've been looking to see if anyone will say anything besides "OH MY GODDD THIS SLAPS!!!!!" on YT about this comeback. I think there's a problem in general with YT reactors because companies like YG are known for sending them stuff in the mail, and a lot of idols actually watch reaction videos, etc. so people will put out fake reactions.
Thank you for sharing! Just the first 2 minutes alone give me hope that NOT everyone is on board this "positivity-at-all-costs" train in supporting kpop. It's okay to have dissenting opinions y'all...
Though BLACKPINK can sing and dance with precision, the production of Kill This Love is also weirdly dated, like it was crafted earlier in the decade and then forgotten in a time capsule for five years.
Blackpink's music will never get better until Teddy is booted. Pretty much every producer in Korea and beyond would be willing to work with them but YG would rather use Teddy's half-finished brain farts from the 2000s vault. I like the girls but I haven't properly loved a release from them since AIIYL
i think pitchfork is full of crap w/ most of their reviews anyway, but this seems like a high rating for an EP full of tracks that are most likely 5 years old? that's just my opinion tho.
I didn’t listen to the ep and I’m not invested in reading a review. I just want to echo the whole Teddy has to go. I don’t even think Teddy is 100% the issue at hand. Teddy also did Gashina and Heroine. While the last one was steeped in some plagiarism it still was good. I really think bigger forces want something and are hindering the creativity of Teddy while also leaving a group to be...this. (Whispers: the answer is YGE)
Debatable, but not the point I should have made: Both songs don’t feel super dated or out of place for Sunmi. In fact they helped push her sound forward beyond what JYP has introduced her with (24Hours and Full Moon).

i mean it happens to lots of demos, but teddy's music gets old too quick i think
